During a recent drive clean that I discovered I had 21745 KB of old files compressed - what are compressed old files?

AND is it OK to delete to free up disk space?

Hi Janie,
We need a bit more info here. What you saw and where (or how do you here). XP can compress old files when they were little used. These files must be stored somewhere, and I think that you have found where. Do not delete them. If you went on the cleaning disc in the properties of a hard disk, you see where you can disable this active or disabled, but turn it off takes more space because you don't compress these files more. It can take a long time to turn it off too much because the system must find every file, unzip it save it to the hard drive and do the following. If it runs out of disk space free of it, it will stop and make either but then your hard drive will be very close to full and your entire system will slow down (it takes a good amount of HD to 'play'.

Looks like you need more disk space. Get another drive (expensive) or go to disk cleanup and try to compress the entire drive. It will take a lot of time, maybe hours or overnight depending on the working speed and the player. But it's free. Overnight is best. I think you can stop it (read the help on this). Do not turn It Off during the race. Bad move.

Something not clear, go back and ask.

I noticed that when I tried to clean my dvd - rw drive d drive was full?   How can I clean that upward?

I'm sorry while shouting did not mean too.  Well I use to be able to watch videos and burn and watch TV on internet, now it used to me let burn, and it won't let me watch my DVDs on the pc and internet tv stops constantly.  I had a problem about six months ago, and the computor guy deleted all my files that he said so he could install a new thank you windows

I know you didn't want to scream... Not to be too critical, but it really looks like you need a new 'computer' man as it is inexcusable to erase data files when you install a new operating system, especially if it does not create a backup disk or files.   Having to reinstall programs is normal, but the data must never be lost.

You apparently have different issues that might be related to malicious software and drivers a bad or hardware problems for your computer.  I recommend that you take a small reputation of the computer "mom & pop" type computer store to have your repairs.  Big box stores, such as Staples, Best Buy, etc. are NOT reputable in computer repair.  Take installation discs you have for the computer, and a good description of what is happening.

When I defragment it says that some files can not be defragmented, it said that it defragmate can't all drive c, when I do a disk clean up it only cleans and removes temporary internet files, empties the Recycle bin and compress old files. When you Hibernate your computer, Windows saves the contents of the system memory in the hiberfil.sys file. As a result, the size of the hiberfil.sys file will always be equal to the amount of physical memory in your system. If you don't use the Hibernate feature and want to reclaim the space used by Windows for the hiberfil.sys file, perform the following steps:

I suggest the following steps and check.

    Step 1:

I'm not entirely convinced that you managed to get rid of the virus, I suggest you start a scan using your software security once more or analysis online by using the link below.

  • I copied the photo library on external drive, and that one photo now shows despite the file being 70 GB.

I had a library in iPhoto on an external HARD drive, and it worked. This is a disc plu so I decided to replace it with a new one that doesn't take much space on my desk. I copied the library through an external DRIVE to another drive, and it seemed to work. However, it now shows that a single photo despite being listed in the file manager as containing more than 70 GB.

I explored a bit further in the file using finder and preview and found many files sorted by date. The photos seem to be all there, but they appear in iPhoto when I switched to this library. Always only one picture appears.

I decided to convert the copied pictures from iPhoto library and it took a lot of time to convert, but the converted library always display just a single photo in Photos when I switch to this library.

I could import all of them individually, but it's a big enough job, if there is a way to get libraries to work correctly.

    Any suggestions?

We need the details - what format is the drive? How is it connected? It serves a TM backup Volume? How you copied the library itself? The library still works fine on the old drive? anything else you can tell us which could help a total strange who don't see you help?

  • In disk management, it shows only a single hard drive and it's C, but it lists the size than what my old drive was that I took out

I got a new hard drive in my computer and the old a subscribed.  I then had to reinstall Windows XP Pro.  In disk management, it shows only a single hard drive and it's C, but it lists the size than what my old drive was that I took out.  The new shows of unallocated hard disk without a drive letter and has a black bar above it. How do I show my new hard drive that is 1 TB instead of one that was a 250 GB is not yet in my computer.

    Hi Reta,

    ·         The drive appears like 250 GB even if it's a terabyte?

    ·         Is the remaining 750Go showing as unallocated disk space?

If this is the case, you can refer to this article on how to use disk management in Windows XP:

You can follow the directions to extend a Simple Volume so that your 250 GB turns into a single terabyte.

Welcome to the community of Microsoft and thanks for posting the question.

    1. who is the antivirus installed on the computer program?

    2. do you use AVG products?

    3. do you have problems regarding the application Vprotection?

Vprotection is a part of AVG Safe Search Toolbar; Some malware will be a miscarriage as vprot.exe.

If you have not installed or there is more than one instance running it may be something else. You can check if it is authentic, by locating the file, view the digital signatures tab and checking the signer are AVG Technologies.
