E5420 - 10 Windows detects no microphone - is there a solution?

After the constant reminders to update my E5420 Latitude from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I decided to go ahead and do it.  Tools update of Microsoft said that my system is compatible.  The update worked fine, but after a few hours of use of Windows 10, I discovered that the microphone did not work.  In Control Panel > Sound > recording, she showed that no microphone was present.  The application of two I use who use the micro - Gchat and Skype - show also no available microphone.

Looking at my system on dell.com, it shows that the E5420 has not been tested with Windows 10 and that all functions may not work.  My system confirms that!  No microphone.  (All BIOS and drivers are later, and I've updated W10 after installation.)

Is there no workaround available solution that will make the built-in microphone of the E5420 to work under Windows 10?  Perhaps there is a Dell approved no driver that would work?

Note: I started Windows 7 and worked well.  I can stay with W7, but I would prefer to use W10 if there is a solution to this problem with the microphone.

Hello John. It has developed a couple of times before with the e5420. This is the same advice I gave others but I don't remember if I got a response saying whether or not it worked. If you have not already done so, install an IDT driver in compatibility mode. You can find all the drivers IDT in Latitude E5420 html page. There is 2 of them for Windows - try an older first.

1. download and save the driver to your desktop.
2. double-click the new icon on the desktop to extract (unzip) the files of the driver.
3. the wizard of the extractor will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be located at the "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Note the exact location that the wizard creates.
4. If the driver begins to install automatically, stop (cancel) installation.
5. search for the driver files on the hard drive (the location you noted).
6. find the file "setup.exe".
7. right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.
8. Select Properties.
9. Select the Compatibility tab.
10. check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.

If this does not help, try a more recent. If no help then I would suggest returning the laptop back to Win7 if find you 10 features to be higher than 7.

    For 64 bit versions of Windows 7, Home Premium can use a maximum of 16 GB, Professional and Ultimate can use up to 192 GB.

    If you want to use all 32GB, upgrade to 64-bit professional or ultimate edition.

    Hello. Your laptop is an Alienware M14x? Have you tried to reinstall the Realtek audio driver?

    Reinstalling the audio driver will restore the default audio settings. On many models by default is for line-in (off mic amp) then you may need to select again for a microphone and set the mic boost levels.

    I would check the settings both on the recording of the sound Properties tab (right-click on the audio icon and click recording devices, right-click on the microphone and set as the default, right-click the microphone, and then click Properties device, then the levels tab to set the push) and also the microphone of the Realtek Audio Manager tab. I would test the microphone using Windows Sound Recorder instead of Skype.

    There is no way to directly copy the photos from Windows Photo Gallery into the micro USB drive.
    You will need to manually copy the pictures from the original location of the pictures on the computer, and then manually copy into the microphone connected to the computer player.

    Try the following steps to copy photos in the micro drive.

    (a) right click on the photo in Windows Photo Gallery and then click Open file location.
    (b) now right-click of the photo, click on copy, then open the Windows USB drive and paste it.

    It's really up to you.  Sometimes there may be false positives, but it looks like your drive is really having some problems.  It was even the cause of the BSOD, who knows.

    But really, I would take the advice and replace the drive.  Or at least be prepared for this 'die', then save your files somewhere else like OneDrive or something so you don't lose important information when it does.

    I think the error message must be correct to Windows 7 and you must do what tells you the message: immediately back up your data and replace the HARD drive with a new one. In your case I would never save important files on the HARD drive. Too risky to lose important files

    Your laptop is 4 months old and that would mean it s covered by the warranty. Contact your local authorized service provider and ask for a replacement drive. They will exchange it and the service is free. :)
