Encryption of files on Windows 7

I can't encrypt all files on my computer, the encryption box is grayed out. I go into properties, on the general tab I choose advance, but encryption is not available. Mind you now, I'm not a super tech in this area... I'm doing something wrong?

What version of Windows 7 do you have?   Windows 7 Professional and ultimate edition have the encryption file system, but Home Premium does not work. Boulder computer Maven

  • How to encrypt files in Windows Vista when it only gives me the option to encrypt it?

    Nice day.

I use an edition of Windows Vista Edition Home Premium and my problem is, it wont let me encrypt my files. The option encrypt my files is "gray" it won't let me select the check box.
    Here's what I did:
    1. place all the files I want encrypted in a folder.
    2. I right click the folder, and then click "Properties".
    3. I click on "Advanced".
    4. in the menu 'Attributes' advanced, it doesn't let me check the "Encrypt contents to secure data".
If there is someone who could help me in this problem, I am grateful gladly.
    Thank you in advance.

Encryption of files is not included in Vista Home Premium. It is only in Vista business, full and firm.

You can use a third-party product like TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org/

  • Unexpected Windows 7 Pro Message on encryption of files, asking Me to back up the encryption key and password

Have a desktop HP 590 t 2 - months old, Win 7 Pro 64-bit running.  Two days ago, I received an unexpected pop-up Windows message, saying something like "Files EFS in Windows."  When I click on it, I get 3 options:

1 certificate of encryption and the emergency key and create the password
    2 ask me later
    3. do nothing... If you don't back up your key and the password, you will not be able to access the files.

What is strange, is that I did nothing (that I know) which would cause no files to encrypt.  I don't know yet what it is, other than what I read in the help Windows.  I called HP Tech Support, they advised me to choose "REMIND ME LATER", that's what I selected.

After that I turned the computer off yesterday morning, then turned it back last night, I had the same command prompt.  But he appeared at the start, then went off on his own.  I did have to choose anything.

Since it is a new computer, I was installing software, but legitimate all software, such as Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Dreamweaver, etc..

    Here are my questions:

1 - is Windows, or could some software I have installed, start encrypting files ON it's OWN?  I thought files could only be encrypted if I expressly and explicitly started encryption of files.

    2. is there a say if all the files on my computer are encrypted?

3 is it normal that Windows prompts you on file encryption, after so many weeks or months of use?

    4. is there a way to get Windows to stop for prompting me on this subject?

I read another post where someone said the same thing.  'Out of the blue", they got the same message, I did it.  There was no response to this post.  Appreciate any advice on what it means.  Thank you

    Ezgoin

Thanks for the tips.  I think I may know what it is.  It could be the edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer, I had installed recently.  Apparently, it encrypts certain files as part of its operation.  I read where it makes the encryption/decryption of files in real time.  I hope it's something 'internal' for SQL Server and will not affect anything else on my PC.  I use SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP for 10 years and has never seen this message.  Was only my PC Win7 64 bit for 2 months, so am always install software.

If the OS Win7 can be noticed this and simply prompting me for a key.  I don't know if I should get just a key/password or not, just to be safe.

But the message popped up when I used an option in a program to copy files to an external flash drive.  I checked, and none of the files on the flash drive, or in the folder root of the program on the desktop are encrypted.  So the time the message appeared might be a coincidence, as the copy of files from the flash drive.

So far, everything works OK and have only seen the message once more, when I restarted Friday, then the message disappeared on its own.  Have not restarted since then but little time.

If he continues to appear, will try your suggestion.  Thank you very much

I never saw the message once more,

  • How encrypt security remove, copy, install & move any file in Windows?

    Hey all,.

Can Windows 7 offer the same policies and security that XP provides the encryption? If yes that indicate them below...

It works the same way as XP.  Make a right click any file and use the properties to encrypt the file and perform other actions that you mention.  Encryption and security are provided by the underlying filesystem (NTFS), and therefore the version of Windows that you are using (XP over Vista or 7) causes only minor cosmetics or differences in user interface.

  • Envy 17: Encryption of files using HP going single or similar utility?

My old laptop is a Toshiba, and it has a software called TFPU Toshiba Fingerprint Utility. I could encrypt any file with my fingerprints. Is there a similar software for my laptop HP Envy W10 available? Or is it possible to install and use this software for Toshiba TFPU on my laptop HP Envy because he has a different fingerprint reader equipment, it was on my Toshiba machine?

Software control manufacturer fingerprint reader is no longer compatible with Windows 10. You must use the windows "Hello" characteristic. Do not install the Toshiba software. You might not have used it in Windows 7 or Windows 8, either.

  • I encrypted my files on a hard drive external and lost

I encrypted my files on an external hard drive and I've reformatted my hard drive on my widows xp, now I get access denied when I try to access the files on my external hard drive. It can be recovered? I don't change anything on the external hard drive would have key codes have been stored on the actual computer or have it stored on the external hard disk where I have encrypted files? I change my username and password when I reinstalled xp.

The "key" to your files encrypted using the Encrypting File System (EFS) is stored in your certificate store, which is part of your profile on the Windows system drive.  The certificate itself is encrypted to your Secure ID (SID, which is a unique number created with your username) and your password in the user and who-knows-what else.  Whenever you use any encryption system, if you can't answer the question "Where is my stored encryption key", then you are begging to lose all your information.  When you destroyed your old system, you wiped out the encryption with her key.  Unless you can recover your system from a backup or "best practices" followed by backing up your certificate, I'm afraid that you have lost access to all your data.  Microsoft has tried very hard and succeeds in making transparent encryption keys - at the expense of people in your situation.

The following is required reading for anyone using EFS and he explains everything very well.  Pay special attention to the paragraph entitled 'Why you should back up your certificates' to the end.

"Best practices for EFS file system.

For the same reasons you have at the moment, I chose to go with the "Truecrypt" freeware as an instead of the EFS encryption solution.  The keys are in my head like a password and I have not lost all data encrypted in 10 years despite having Windows terminally to the crash from under me several times.

(an error occurred applying attributes to the file: the location of the file is displayed then access is denied is written)

If you did not save your certificates to external media before you reinstalled XP, data is almost certainly inaccessible forever. You can contact Elcomsoft to see if their software can help, but there is no backdoor to EFS encryption. This is why you should always follow best practices and know what you're doing * before * encrypt you anything. A lesson of sad and difficult.

  • How to decrypt files in windows 7 bioaccess? I forgot the password help me please.

Hi, this is my first post in responses from microsoft, I have a problem, I encrypted a lot of files in windows 7 by default bio access, now I want to decrypt, but I forgot the password, now I don't know what to do, the data are very useful so I want it reverts to its original state. Thank you.

I think that .vmdf - the files are encrypted files WinLocker. If Yes, then you need advice on the WinLocker / Egis technology web site. Also note that if the encryption scheme WinLocker is good then you will not be able to decrypt the files without password. You can look like this: you have chosen WinLocker if every Tom, Dick and Harry could ask people of Egis technology a backdoor password? He'd WinLocker a pretty useless encryption scheme, easily crackable by anyone...
