Hi Kclimer,
You can go to the control panel > programs & features and make sure that all entries in Java are uninstalled. Reset.
Then download JRE 6 Update 14 here:

Install it again.

I got this error for a few months. Initially, I came across it trying to update Java, Adobe Reader and now RIM Blackberry Desktop Manager.
The specific error is "Error 1606 could access the network location:.", with the colon and the dot at the end. Therefore, it is difficult to know exactly what registry entry, it's.
I tried to change various registry keys and using a number of files of Microsoft "Fix it for me", but the error remains.
Can someone help me please identify the location of the network that weird symbols ":." to refer and possible to put an end to this problem once and for all?
I'd be happy to re - try fix if proposed as a possible solution. Thanks in advance.

also, error appeared when I tried to do an update of the adobe reader
red x boxes appearing in the scene of most of the images and links (probably due to the absence of java)
I do not install Java on my computer and I don't see that; so I think that it is not related.

Satellite Pro L450D-12 X - code error related to Java?
I have a Satellite Pro L450D - 12 X on windows 7 and had it about a month. Play the games that use java to run and now it has stopped working. I also have the same problem with Adobe reader. Tonight, I tried to download and install Google earth, and once again the zip.
I can't uninstall these programs because it gives me the same error message every time and frankly I'm about to tear my hair out.
Error 1606. Could not find % APPDATA%\ network connection. Please please please can someone help me sort this out?
No idea on the microsoft forums either and they checked and said I should ask here.Hello
To be honest I have never heard of an error during uninstalling programs. Have you tried to uninstall using CCleaner for example? It is a nice tool that cleans the Windows registry and folders where you can uninstall programs different too.
Otherwise I m of ideas maybe you have a virus on your computer, then try to run a virus scan.
In the worst case, it s a software problem and you need to reinstall Windows.

Error 1606: Could not access network location % APPDATA%\.
I am trying to install a game for Windows: Zoo Tycoon 2 Ultimate Collection (which is Zoo Tycoon 2 + 4 expansion packs), on a Vista Home SP2 machine. When you install disc 1, I almost immediately get the error above,Error 1606: could not access network location % APPDATA%\. I looked at the error on this forum, who led me to the installation page for the installation package located manual download page offline at the: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/error_installshield.xml. When I tried to install the offline installation package, I got the same error, 1606. I don't know what to do next? This game comes without a product key, this support won't even take my call. Thank you-
This problem occurs because there is incorrect entries in the Shell folder of the user who is logged on to Microsoft Windows. When Windows Installer goes to the sale of Shell folder of the user who is logged on to the computer, Windows Installer cannot locate the correct entry. The solution is inhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/886549.
The steps to correct this problem involve editing the Windows registry. Change the settings of the REGISTRY can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the REGISTRY settings configuration can be solved. Changes to these settings are at your own risk. I suggest that you first back up your registry as follows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry.
Here are the steps to fix it.
1. click on start, run, typeregedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. look for the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell dossiers\
3 remove the entries that show the path that is listed in the error message.
886549 KBhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/886549: Regedit open again. In the left pane, click User Shell Folders, point tonew, click expandable string value, type the value name that you want to restore (AppData) and then press ENTER. Right click on this value, clickchange, type the value in the value data for the value name box, and then clickOK. The value data must be: % USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming.
Step 8 KB 886549 suggests that you also check the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. However, by fixing my problem, I had not to change values in the registry key. If this does not work, follow ALL the steps in the referenced article.

This only happens with programs of msi. I used the fixit for me solution and it does not solve my problem and I'm afraid to mess with the registry. What can I do now? I am running Vista Home Premium. I don't know exactly what details you want. Just ask and I'll try to provide answers.
Sorry to take so long to get back to you - but I have tried different things to try to solve my problem.
I was able to upgrade Silverlight without problem. But failed to update Adobe Reader or Java.
I ran the Microsoft fixit to resolve the Error 1606. These are the 50356 fixit. Microsoft help page says:
"This problem can occur if there is an incorrect setting in one of the following registry subkeys:"
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
It did not work. I went to the support page that you recommended and ran the fixit there - and who did not.
Then I noticed that this fixit 50356 mentions 'current user' - so I tried to change my standard account to an administrator account. It basically gave me two administrator accounts. (I already had a separate administrator account and was simply put the password so that it will prompt to update Java and Adobe.) Then I tried to update Adobe Reader by using the new administrator (officially a standard account) and had no problem! Then, of course, the problem has been to my administrator account.
I'm guessing that the Microsoft fixit didn't work is because I was on the internet using my standard account, not my administrator account. So, it 'fixed' my standard account, that does not need fixing. I can't connect to the internet using my administrator account, unless it is necessary.
It would be useful that the Microsoft help page has explained that the problem is probably in the administrator user account that is used to download and upgrade programs, that the fixit solution that they recommended would fix the problems only on that account, and I had to log on that account, connect to the internet and then running the fixit. But it doesn't work. It just says: If you get the Error 1606, run this fixit.
I changed my new manager at standard and I'll connect to my normal administrator account and run the fixit from here. If this is the problem with this account, I will be setting up a new administrator user account and delete it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to try to help me. People like me who do not know much about computers need people like you to help us!

Error 1606 annoys me! [Solved]
I did check Microsoft Live OneCare virus and noticed that there is malicious code in the Java folder. I wanted to reinstall Java together, but I have a problem, I can't remove it. I used JavaRa to uninstall Java on my computer, but I still see it in remove a program window. JavaRe made it so that when I try to install, its is no longer asking me to remove the old version of Java. But I still get the same error message: "Error 1606. Could not access network location ". I tried to check:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
All seemed well, I restarted my computer and I've always had this problem. I am running Windows Vista 32 bit with Google Chrome.Link to screenshot:
