  • When trying to download or update msi programs and it's got to the part of the installation, I get the Error 1606 could not access network location % APPDATA%\. This only happens with programs of msi.

This only happens with programs of msi.  I used the fixit for me solution and it does not solve my problem and I'm afraid to mess with the registry.  What can I do now?  I am running Vista Home Premium.  I don't know exactly what details you want.  Just ask and I'll try to provide answers.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you - but I have tried different things to try to solve my problem.

I was able to upgrade Silverlight without problem.  But failed to update Adobe Reader or Java.

I ran the Microsoft fixit to resolve the Error 1606.  These are the 50356 fixit.   Microsoft help page says:

"This problem can occur if there is an incorrect setting in one of the following registry subkeys:"

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"

It did not work.  I went to the support page that you recommended and ran the fixit there - and who did not.

Then I noticed that this fixit 50356 mentions 'current user' - so I tried to change my standard account to an administrator account.  It basically gave me two administrator accounts.  (I already had a separate administrator account and was simply put the password so that it will prompt to update Java and Adobe.)   Then I tried to update Adobe Reader by using the new administrator (officially a standard account) and had no problem!  Then, of course, the problem has been to my administrator account.

I'm guessing that the Microsoft fixit didn't work is because I was on the internet using my standard account, not my administrator account.  So, it 'fixed' my standard account, that does not need fixing.  I can't connect to the internet using my administrator account, unless it is necessary.

It would be useful that the Microsoft help page has explained that the problem is probably in the administrator user account that is used to download and upgrade programs, that the fixit solution that they recommended would fix the problems only on that account, and I had to log on that account, connect to the internet and then running the fixit.  But it doesn't work.  It just says: If you get the Error 1606, run this fixit.

I changed my new manager at standard and I'll connect to my normal administrator account and run the fixit from here.  If this is the problem with this account, I will be setting up a new administrator user account and delete it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to try to help me.  People like me who do not know much about computers need people like you to help us!

  • Error 1606 during installation of java and adobe reader. Help?

Hello, the part of this problem that I found more fustrating has been that I can't install java on my computer. I receive the Error 1606 %AppData% or something related to this.

    I tried...

    online and offline java download

repair Windows for some registry files

    restarting my computer

uninstall all verisons them of java

try to install on internet explore not add on the verison

research on different forums for help

using command prompt to clear cache (did not work anyway)

    clean the disc

    and still nothing.

    other problems with the computer...

    Slow speed

red x boxes appearing in the scene of most of the images and links (probably due to the absence of java)

also, error appeared when I tried to do an update of the adobe reader

red x boxes appearing in the scene of most of the images and links (probably due to the absence of java)

I do not install Java on my computer and I don't see that; so I think that it is not related.

    As well as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549 , see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2258121

Make sure that the registry entries are exactly as stated in the statutes or that there is a good reason for them being different from the default. for example, if you have moved any of your folders to different locations.

Try to create a new administrator account and see if the problem persists with this account.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-GB/Windows7/create-a-user-account

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-GB/Windows7/change-a-users-account-type

If you succeed with another administrator account, your user profile may be damaged. This procedure allows to solve this

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-GB/Windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

Note that you must create a third-party administrator account to make the copy. No other two accounts can be used during the operation.

  • Installation of KB2686509 and get the error 0xF0F4 (WinXP SP3 integrated)

I have a number of point of sales systems that we are trying to get updated, and while any other update installed correctly, this last updated simply won't be installed.

-FaultyKeyboard.log file is generated and consists of a single entry: kbd106.dll.  This dll does not exist anywhere on the devices in question.  In addition, there is no entry in hklm\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts\ to this .dll.  The only entry in the registry that I can find about this file is in hklm\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\KeyboardsType Mapping\JPN\, and removing the entry, followed by resetting clearly isn't the issue.  To be clear: the test at this stage machine doesn't have the .dll file or all the registry entries that apply and it continues to generate the FaultyKeyboard.log file.

-Downloaded and run the Fixit50882 to see if he can do something more than what I did manually. It returns a message that "this Microsoft Fix it does not apply to your operating system or version of the application.  A not uncommon issue given that as long as they are XP machines in almost every way, they embedded XP.

-J' manually checked that there are no results for map IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout and ScanCode anywhere in the registry.

-Here is an excerpt of the file kb2686509.log for the last attempt to install:

-Regarding changes to systems, they are few. Previously, they had been in a subnet isolated, unable to be routed.  With the evolution of the security standards, we had to set them up so that they could be updated.  It necessary to change the subnet to be routable, but with a firewall very limited for the subnet, configure a WSUS server for updates for devices, change the levels of NTLM authentication, installation of the SP3 for devices that were missing, install Windows Update Client v3, import of configuration of WSUS in the registry database (as they are not on the field) and install Bit9 agent in the single mode of visibility.  WSUS shows that 220 updates have been installed, 3 have not been installed and 1 failure (2686509).

-The devices in question are touchscreen point of sale devices and don't have connected keyboards (but have USB available).

I managed to track down a copy of the kbd106.dll file and copy it in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder, which seems to have allowed the update complete at last.  The challenge was to find a good copy of the file in question.
