Error 646 times

Whenever I try to install some Windows updates, I get this error message.  I tried to install each update separately, all failed.  They are the following: (KB978380, KB981433, KB978382, KB981715).  All 4 are updates of security for Excel, Office and Outlook.  There is no connectivity problem, because all the automatic updates are found in annex.  I am on DSL and have a lot of disk space.

Have you tried manually download and install each update from here:

for example: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/results.aspx?freetext=KB981433&displaylang=en&stype=s_basic

Type in the article, find the update, download it to your hard drive and then manually install the same.

  • Error - 646, while trying to install KB977304.

Any attempt KB977304 installation. Install fails error 646, been round on Help FAQ sites and this is the second time that I have followed the links on this forum. Tried deleting download malicious malware it freezes also. Don't know what a manual download, but followed this link too and entered in the update #.  It will start and get to a point and everything freezes. This is also linked to an Itunes installation failure. I did all of their suggestions, until checking my windows settings, which is what brings me here. Thought it might be something to that day. BTW KB977304 was not install for a while now.

    Ideas:

    • You have problems with programs
    • Error messages
    • Recent changes to your computer
    • What you have already tried to solve the problem

But now, to start the installation, I get the error message 'No Win32 Application valid'

There is a good chance that you see the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no installed anti-virus application or subscription has expired * when the machine was first infected * and/or your subscription has expired since and/or the machine is not kept fully corrected in Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the following: Format & reinstall Windows.  A repair install won't help!

    1. see if you can download/run the MSRT tool manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not analysis FAST!  You may need to download the MSRT on an uninfected machine and then transfer the MRT. EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN. EXE before running it.

    3. now post the logs required in a forum appropriate for support by an expert in the field. DON'T SKIP THIS STEP!

I can recommend the assistance of experts available in these forums: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5, http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup, http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.phpand http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30

    Hi Rocketron,

Sometimes patches seem to just have a hard time to proceed with the installation.  I have a fw for to look you at other things.  First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.

Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.

    (1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
    (2) search for each update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309).
    3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run.  You must accept the agreement and then click on continue.
    (4) repeat this process for each download of updates Windows could not install.
    (5) to rerun the update from Microsoft, click find updates.  If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched.

If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner.  Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or erase viruses can prevent the installation of patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

    Good luck

  • Error 646 and 80070652

Well, I've experienced this before, and it seems every time I have to send my laptop for service, this problem occurs.
Luckliey you guys saves always the day even if it just takes a time.
    Thank you by the way.

Well, I have Vista Home Premium w/SP1 32-bit edition. I have a Hp Pavilion dv6000.  I tried to update usually coming from the center of update of windows and in particular
    Security update - KB977304
    Microsoft Office Update - KB951550 KB951944, KB973704
    Microsoft Office Service Pack 2 - (SP2)
    Info - KB976416 path
    Word - KB974561
    System - KB967642
Then he fails every time and I went through the nets and tried the computer left click then the tab manage and systems and tried to restart, I guess you mean the windows installation program and it does not work.  I thought my cd for Vista input and make the retooling or you want to call.  But what stops me, it's the Service Pack 2 update.  So do not know what to do please help if you can.  Thank you bouquets and you guys rock!

Have you actually tried to download Office updates manually and install - it's the most common way of treating of the error 646.

  • c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll - update error 646

I continue to wear on one of my two machines updates failed code 646 for the Office updates. I have questions about c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll versions (and other related files apparently). I have Windows Update set to check and let me decide. I have maintained security using workaround to manually
    Download.

On my desk for c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll, the version is 7.3.7600.16385. This machine is a Dell Inspiron (put into operation in July 2009) with Windows 7 HP 32 (update Vista HP 32 recently), Intel and Office Professional 2003. Properties show that the file has been
created, modified and accessed July 17, 2009. This machine has never had any failure of an update.

On the laptop (Compaq V6508AU) HP version c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll is 7.4.7600.226 - Vista HP 32 (put into operation in September 2007), AMD and Office Professional 2003.  Created and consulted on October 4, 2009, amended August 7, 2009. This machine
a constant codes 646 failure for the Office updates in October, November and December, i.e. after creation and consulted on date.

Is the version on the laptop of the cause of the update error 646? Why the desktop version are previous to the laptop?

I'm just guessing that this problem could be linked to the MSOcache or a related Office registry error only.

Maybe the uninstallation and reinstallation of Office isn't enough (sometimes it was not in the past).

You mention WSUS that is not Windows Update Agent. WSUS is completely different from system update.

Maybe to a certain stage why some have the problem with 646 with office and others are not clearly will some time in the future. At the moment we have only the work around, which is annoying but works.
