Error in copy/move in the data store

When I try to copy/move files from a data store to another store of data in vCenter 4.1, then I get the error message saying "cannot access the file.

ESXi 4.1

vCenter 4.1, Windows 2008 R2

Maybe you should do FastSCP a try? Also, make sure that ISO is not mounted to a guest.

  • Copying files to the data store

I use the server ESXI 4.0 and a few Linux VM running. I would like to ask if there is a way to copy any file to any directory VM on the host main data store. If there is a way could someone please suggest some tips.

You can use the data store browser (right-click on the icon for the data store).

    Or VMware Converter.

Or enable SSH and SCP or FastSCP.

  • Copy VM in the data store. 2GB becomes 30 GB!

    Hi all

ESXi 4, using the vSphere client. I browse the data store, then copy a VM folder into another folder in the same data store. It takes almost 1 hour.

When I take a glance in the destination folder, the file becomes 30 GB!, the original 2 GB file.

What is going on? Now I wonder, it takes so long to copy.

On reflection, it's as if, Thin Provisioning disappears when you are copying. 30 GB is the size of the VM disk.

What is the best way to create a 'clean' of the virtual machine copy, can I just copy paste the folder?

    Thanks in advance.

Copy operation to create discs always thick.

If you want to copy on a thin disk, you must use the vmkfstools command:

  • Not enough space on the data store

I created a VM w2k8 server. I have attached a second virtual drive to it in the vsphere client determined I gave him too much space. I went back in the vshere client and click on delete. Now, when I go to add a second drive with the right amount of space I want t use I get error not enough space on the data store. I noticed that the old file vdmk still exist but do not know how to proceed. It is a 5 ESX environment and the data store is on the SAN. Space on the windows server is listed as unallocated.

Hello and welcome to the community of VMware. Well I would like to browse the data store and make sure that there are no vmdk files sitting here that, if the other wise not to be there. Have a go at this and feedback your conclusions.

    Best wishes.

  • Error e/s download large vmdk file to the data store

Hi, I am looking to download a large file (400 GB) vmdk to our SAN by using the method of the vsphere client browser store data but get IO error when it gets to about 270 GB. Is there a limit to how big a file can be? any other recommended method?

    Thank you

    Rob

What is the version of VMFS (VMFS3 or VMFS5) of the data store? In the case of VMFS3 there are limitations on file size depending on the block size of the data store (for example, 1 MB block size-> ~ 256 GB).

  • error message about the size of the data store

I installed ESXi 5.1.0 on VMware workstation and interfaced the vsphere client management interface. It's all about

Windows 7 laptop. I am now installing a VMware vCenter Server device image by using the vsphere client. But I have

get an error stating: the capacity of the drive specified is greater than the amount available on the data store. Click Cancel to

back from the value of disk space? How is it determined? I tried to change the size of the data store

but I still get the same error. I do it just with what I have at home, and I'm new to VMware technology.

    I found this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003565

And it seems to imply that the size of the block can be a problem. Block size for the data of my ESXi store is set to 1 MB, which is expected to support upward

up to 256 GB. I can't imagine that I need more space.

On a different note, would you please tell me how I can post a couple of groups? What is the policy on this?

I took a glance at the file unit .ovf and given the size of the virtual disk that is required for the data disk rose from 60 GB to 100 GB with update 1.

It can work to tweak/change the .ovf file, however, in this case I would simply create a larger store of data to meet the requirements for the virtual disks (25 + 100 GB + overhead).

  • vSphere - external USB drive to the data store local copy

    Hello world

Yesterday, I created this post: http://communities.VMware.com/message/2135813
With your help, we managed to find the only way to install ESXi to ISO image to USB external hard drive is to be attached to the machine near her and run the Setup from there, cannot be done directly.

Today, we need your help in the next step, as it seems.

We have a Dell r.620 physical machine with VMware ESXi 5.0 installed U1. We have an external hard drive with the operating system installation ISO images, software backup and a little more.

The question is - how to copy the data from the external USB connected directly to the ESXi host to the data store local disk on the host.

Yes, we know that we can do in the way that connect us to the machine on the same location and copy it into the data from there store. But we would do it directly. And we don't very well see by ourselves or using Google Uncle again.

Poor ability to research, or is not possible?

Thank you very much for your help!

The court to do is to use the Datastorebrowser or WinSCP

ESXi itself can only read the Fat16 drives - so what looks like the short path is the long way ;-)

  • Method to move the virtual machines in the data store temporary so I can rebuild pool recommended NFS

Our current data store is a mounting NFS on Nexenta (zfs), which has a pool, I need to rebuild (migration of raidz2 to mirror striped for performance). Initially, I was relying on the judgment of all virtual machines, create a new pool, copy (cp - r) of the Nexenta console all virtual machines to the new pool, recreating the pool mirror and then copy (cp - r) all the data back.

I have seen several discussions on this topic and seems like the simplest method would be to use the feature to "Migrate" so that the virtual machines are not fragmented. However in some of my pre-test when I copy a virtual machine between the basins of the Nexenta console it appears (from the data store Explorer) to initially create the vmdk provisioned and then once completed it copy looks too thin.

I hope that I can simply copy the Nexenta console, using the option "Migrate" in vCenter on each of my 40 MV looks like it would be * quite * tedious compared to the simple issuance of an order of 'cp - r' and leave all the copies of VMs (1.5 to) during the night and then adding them to each host.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or maybe a way to generate scripts easily (?) the option "migrate" in vCenter?

    Thank you all!

You can select multiple VMs in vCenter regularly using CTRL + click or shift + click and both migrate them as long as they have the same storage destination.  You can also schedule it as a task.    Add manually each computer virtual back in hand is not less painful than migrating individually, anyway.

  • Error: snapshot file < uspecified filename > is greater than th emaximum size supported by the data store

    I get the following error.

File & lt; uspecified filename & gt; is superior to th emaximum supported by the data store

Thanks for any help

The virtual disk is too large to create a snapshot on a 4MB block size data store. The maximum size of VMDK is 1,016 Go.

  • Copy of VM in the data store to the ext4 Linux file system

Hi all, I need to "backup" VM by copying its folder in the data store to

a Linux system with the ext4 file system. Is it safe? I mean will benefit from the VM

corrupted? I remember reading in the forum about ESXi4 vmfs is a

Special file system that may have the particularity, others do not have.

Thus, the copy of the files to another file system vmfs can corrupt the

    files?

What do you think? Thank you.

    Hello

No, it won't corrupt VM or VMDK files simply by copying the folder. However, in the guest operating system (e.g. NTFS) file system may be affected. Suggest you take a snapshot or use some backup software.

If you can afford it, powering the theVM. This will ensure the consistency of applications within the guest OS.

  • Try to delete the data store: error DestroyVmfsDatastore

    Hi all

I am trying to remove a data store (storage is iSCSI). There is no VM on the data store.

In v2.5, I must click on remove datastore, she thinks for a few minutes and then remove the data of all servers store.

In version 4.0, I clicked on delete, and it has only removed from a host. Instead of be connected to 8 hosts than before it was presented as connected to 7 guests.  (it should not be connected to all guests!).

If I try to remove it from another host, I get an error message:

"Error while configuring the host: DestroyVmfsDatastore: can't delete partition 1 on lun vmhba32:12:0 '.

I tried this on two stores different data I needed to delete with identical results. Any ideas?

Instead of be connected to 8 hosts than before it was presented as connected to 7 guests.

Have you tried to force a rescan storage adapters?
