ESX 5.5 HA confusion

Guys,

I have a doubt. If I have a cluster with HA enabled heartbeat of data store is defined. Response of isolation is off VM. What happens if my main server management network is out of service.

And what happens when the management of a slave server network is down?

Thank you very much.

The response of isolation that you configure on the cluster is triggered if the two following conditions are TRUE:

1 FDM HA agent on the host is unable to communicate with any other agent FDM of the same cluster if AP management interfaces. If the host is a master or a slave is not serious.

2. the host cannot ping any of its addresses to default isolation, it's default gateway of the host, but you can manually configure several alternative addresses insulation.

Pulse data store are completely irrelevant here. The response of isolation esteem communication network only.

The answer to stop insulation has nothing really to do with the initial goal of AP, detecting host failures and restarts the virtual machines. It is intended for the case where you run the management and VM traffic on the same network infrastructure. which would mean that if a host is isolated, virtual machines have lost their means of communication network as well. They will be made available again in the event of network problems by using the feature HA (VM restarts on other hosts).

  • Confused by the strategy of allocation of ram ESX virtual machines

    Hello

I have a "MS SBS 2003 R2 premium" production virtual machine running on ESX 3.5.0 build 123630: VM has 4 GB of allocated RAM.

On this virtual machine, all processes are running (IE exchange, sql server, antivirus, antispam, mail, archiving,... etc.) and some of them are performing badly (especially exchange and sql mail archiving database); While working on the optimization with the machine to a single application they analized the use of resources within SBS 2003 and told me that there is not enough RAM (only 300 M. By the way it seems to me that on an OS Server using a lot of free ram is a waste of resources, but it is another point...).

Looking at the windows Task Manager (see attached screenshots) is confirmed, but control use of RAM for RAM usage average VM (with infrastructure VI client) is between 1 and 1.5 GB during working hours (09:00 - 20:00).

I'm confused: If there are so many processes within the VM asking for memory, why ESX gives only a third of the RAM allocated to the VM? And as all the other 3 GB, are they paged to disk?

Thanks in advance to help my understanding.

    Guido

Don't forget the vmkernel activiely tries to save on the memory usage - the tool is Transparent PAge Sharing - ability to the vmkernel to identify identical memory pages and store it once read only memory - so you could very easily have guest o/s of the virtual machine showing that it is using 4 GB but the esx server is only show that vm use - less

Now on your poor perfromance - what is the configuration of your server ESX - memory, CPU? How many virtual machines are hosted, and what are the respective configurastions - mem, # viretual UC? With a large file of the PAge check the performance graph and see how much memory ball is active, if any?

  • Confused in what I need [ESXi Embedded; ESX Installable; ESX 3.5]

    Hello team.

Let me explain what I first: I need to run 6 virtual machines and manage these 6 VMs through a single window. I might be able to manage all VMs 6 using the single window (in general-, this could be any application). To manage, I mean, create snapshots, go back, use them as if I had VMware workstation. I don't need any other features. I'm looking in the plug of the machine: Quad core; 8 GB; SATA RAID.

Now my question is how do I select ESXi Embedded or Installable or standalone ESX. Is there documentation that shows these differences or videos showing what are interfaces?

I read the difference between ESXi and ESX and it was something citing on linux required for ESX. Does this mean that my whitebox will need Linux installed before that I could install ESX?

ESXi is barebone architecture, which means, I'll lose admin capabilities?

You think, with these questions, am confused? Thanks for any help in advance

Novice user with virtualization - Manny

    Hello Manny,

In fact, it's the same interface and the program, you use esx and esxi.

Free ESXi, esx costs money and can do all kinds of magic to keep near 100% availability.

You will need to have an admin on windows pc to run the VI client from.

The VI-client (or VMware Infrastructure client) connects to your host, and from there, you can create new guests, create the snapshot, return etc.

NO, you don't need linux. In fact my esx 3i is booting from a USB key no OS is required on the hard disk.

I have attached a photo where you can see the interface to manage hosts.

ESXi and replace DO NOT ESX.  The reason why I gave you the comparison is because you can see what each call to savings.

ESXi, is short, ESX less the service console.  Both are Virtualization platforms.

You can connect to the Service Console but keep in mind there is no way to do an in place upgrade from ESX to ESXi -either 4 or 5 - it has to be a fresh install -

  • Still confused about snapshots - delete or consolidate?

I use snapshots so rarely, I find that I'm confused. I have a virtual machine that has a snapshot for quite awhile ago (like 10 months...). I want to get rid of him, to recover the space. I won't have to go back; the way in which the virtual machine is running and configured is now acceptable for my developer. This particular virtual machine does not show a setting "Must consolidate", in the list of virtual machines for this 5.1 ESXi host, so I don't think I need to "consolidate". There is only the snapshot in the Snapshot Manager.

When I search "instant delete" in the VMware knowledge base, he told me that a 'Delete' will do a consolidation, and then delete the snapshot. This looks like what I want. But what is the difference between "Delete" and "consolidate"? "Consolidate" not he removes the snapshot later?

In my situation, what should I do? I think I need to 'delete '. This will get rid of the snapshot, but let my VM in the State it's in now. Is this correct? (Also, I could do this with the virtual machine, because the snapshot file is like 35G in size now, and I know that a delete or consolidate the will really take a lot of time with a snapshot this return). We will migrate all our warehouses of our current HP SAN data to a new SAN from Dell, so I want to clean up snapshots now.

    Thank you

    Hello Michael,

Actually consolidate and remove it from the same operation they commit it again records - that is to say the changes when the virtual machine will run on the snapshot on basic disks.

consolidate - validations of the disk-based data and removes the snapshot

Delete - validating data at the base disk and deleted files from snapshots.

Delete - Deletes the snapshot but does not commit the data on the basic disk.

The only reason why consolidate option has been added in ESX 5.0 or later versions was much assumed that the option remove would remove files and does not validate the data.

But on the real scenario. Just to avoid this VMware came with consolidate it. that consolidate the fact on background is it takes another snapshot and performs delete it all operations. Hope that clarifies the confusion.

And in your situation, you should make clear all.

    Thank you

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5.0 build 110268 ESXi 5.1 or newer

I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

    1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

    (A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

    (B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

-This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

    2. through ESXi 5 knots ESX 3.5 virtual machines using vmotion

    3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

Thank you in advance, all the tips

  • ESX 4 Local Storage Name Changed - can't change back

Recently, I move my VMware farm.  When I got to the top, one of local storage devices came back as "Local (1).  I've never had one (1) about this before and now all VMS are orphans.  When I try to change the name back to just 'Local', he says that there is already, which it is not.  Somehow, VMware has become confused!

Anyone knows how I can bring the 'Local' and the virtual machine without having to remove and re-add?  There are some VM who really "may not be moved" because of a restriction of the application.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

as you mentioned several blades, I assume you are also using vCenter Server.

How have you tried to rename the data store, by connecting to vCenter Server or directly on the affected ESX Server?

Maybe the vCenter DB contains an entry in database 'outdated' that block any operation rename.

I saw similar problems when I tried to rename a data store, while it is directly connected to an ESX Server, which was managed by a vCenter server.

I managed to rename the data store, but more or less immediately after it was renamed from the original name.

    So if possible, I would

    • disconnect/remove this host ESX to vCenter
    • connect the vSphere Client directly to the ESX Server
    • new attempt by renaming the local data store
    • Check the changes are permanent/accepted
    • Reconnect/add a return to vCenter ESX host

    Good luck

  • In the case of a vMotion, the ESX send RARP or gratuitousARP?

    Hi guys,.

I'm a bit confuse in a vMotion, ESX would send RARP or gratuitousARP to update the ARP LAN data.

who knows the details or a document guide on this subject.

I wrote a blog after a debate today on the feature to notify the switches, with more details:

  • Activation of the ESX 4.1 frames

I read the article on activation of the frames, and I'm confused.

I have a vswitches existing on two ESX 4.1 hosts that are used for storing IP I want to enable jumbo frames on.

The Vcenter server they are connected to running 5.0 Update 1.

I understand that I must activate the vswitch of frames with the esxcfg-vswitch command and set the mtu of the portgroup.

It appears the mtu on the switch and exchanges can be done via Vcenter Vcenter 5. Is there a reason to do command line because my hosts are managed by a server Vcenter 5?

If the option to set the MTU on the vSwitch groups and the port is available, there is not need to do it on the command line. In fact, I was not aware of this and thought it was only available with the hosts also in version 5.

What I recommend in any case, it is to test if frames to - end work after you configure things. To make this race

    vmkping s 8972 - d

to ensure that managers are not segmented. For an interesting explanation on this subject, see http://rickardnobel.se/archives/992

  • confused with the part of name of products

    Guys,

Am a bit confused. For small businesses, vmware got 2 versions; the free and non-free.

But how are named these products? I can only find vmware esx or esxi hypervisor but I can't seem to understand the differences between these products.

In addition, on the free versions; can we use snapshot?

    Thanks in advance.

All editions (free and paid editions) share the same binaries and are only limited by the license key that you apply. The free "hypervisor" is limited to for example 32 GB RAM/vRAM and can be handled by one instance of vCenter server. However, you can attach to storage systems, take pictures...

for a comparison of the various editions, see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf or http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/small-business/compare-kits.html
