Upgrading ESX 3.5.0 build 110268 ESXi 5.1 or newer

I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

(A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

(B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

-This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

2. through ESXi 5 knots ESX 3.5 virtual machines using vmotion

3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

Thank you in advance, all the tips

  • Upgrading ESX when you are connected to the SAN

Hello. At the time, it was considered preferable to unplug the host SAN during installation or upgrading ESX fram. Is this still the case with ESXi 5.5?

    Hello

In fact, it is always best practice to disconnect from the SAN, but you could do it on the fly as well using the Manager to update if your upgrade to ESXi ESXI 5.1 to 5.5. I have seen many do

without any problem. Just make sure that the hardware is compatible in HCL.

  • Upgrade ESX 4-5 ESX (without losing the existing local VMs)

    Hello team

I have a host ESX 4 that I want to improve and I have 7 virtual machines running on this server locally. is there any posibility I can improve ESX 4 to 5 without of lossing VM?

or should I go? I will go to our storage if there is no option.

    Kind regards

There will be no impact on the VMFS data store where you saved your VM in the local hard disk. you will be 3 option when you try to upgrade the server ESX to ESXI 5.0, they are

    1 migrate ESX, preserve VMFS

    2. install ESXi, preserver VMFS

    3. install ESXI, crush VMFS

    refer to the screenshot below.

But personally recommend you to migrate the virtual computer out of other data store it helps us in 2 ways.

    1. safety do not take the slightest risk snack Server crahes

2 allow to use the feature of VMFS 5.0 by updating the VMFS data to new version VMFS5 store

  • VMware Tools status shows OK after upgrade ESX

    I installed my ESX 3.5 U3 (build 123630) server to build 130756.

All virtual machines watch tool OK status, even if they are to 123630. If I connect in a virtual machine and open VMTools plateau, the upgrade button is grayed out.

If I manually start an upgrade VMTools, it upgrades 130756 tools.

How to change the current version of the tools in Virtual Center?

Some of these improvements have no change with VMware Tools. However, when you do a manual installation, they will show the new build number.

He is allowed to stay with the version of the tools that you have at the moment. Unless VC deferred that tools are outdated.

    Hope that answers your question.

  • What is ESX 3.0.3 (Build version 184235)?

I was invited by a customer to move several ESX 3.0.3 hosts in their current virtualcenter Server vCenter 4.1 box.

I checked the compatibility matrix and have found that vCenter 4.1 is compatible with ESX 3.0.3 Update 1, which corresponds to the version version 231127.

Unfortunately, most of the guests are ESX 3.0.3 Build version 184235, which I think would not update 1.  I have searched on google but can't find any reference to build 184235.

    Any ideas?

probably the best way to identify a build is by issuing two commands of the service console

    vmware -v

    and

    esxupdate -l query

  • vCenter is virtual server - how to upgrade ESX host?

Our vCenter server is a virtual server.  I've been thinking how to run update manager on the host ESX, vCenter is sitting on.   The only thing I can think of is to use the VMware Converter stand alone app and move the vCenter server to another ESX host and then start vCenter / Manager Update on the new ESX host to update the original ESX host.

    Is there an easier way?

you have a shared storage?  If so, go to the host computer running the vCenter VM on, turned off, make a note of the data store that it is, remove the inventory, go to another host, browse the data store, find the vmx file, right-click "add to the inventory.

.. .or you can use VMware Converter to move the VM vCenter.  Another way would be to turn off the VM vCenter and do the upgrade using the CLI interface.

  • I just upgraded to FF 3 FF9 and in the process lost my 'New tab' button, and there isn't one in the view > customization window. So, how manually open a new tab in FF9?

    Question
I just upgraded to FF 3 FF9 and in the process lost my 'New tab' button, and there isn't one in the view > customization window. So, how manually open a new tab in FF9?

To open the window to customize the toolbar, do one of the following:

    • Firefox button > Options > toolbars
    • Press ALT or F10 to temporarily show the Menu bar and choose from there (view > toolbars > customize)
    • Hold DOWN the ALT key while pressing the VTC keyboard letters

    See-> https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/common-questions-after-upgrading-firefox-36

Regarding the new button tab, you see the end a '+' after the last tab or the right of the tab bar? This is the icon of the new tab.

    • CTRL + T will open a new tab

Not related to your question, but...

You may need to update some plug-ins. Check your plug-ins and update if necessary:

Look in the License Manager in the National Instruments of your Start menu folder.  This is probably just a matter of activating LabVIEW 8.6 and maybe some other features with your new code license rather than your previous full version license code.

No, you pushed PES 11 up to the limit. You could move on to PSE 13, or you can download the free adobe dng converter and use it to make the DNG files that your version of ACR can understand.
