  If you need extended evaluation licenses to have more time for normal commercial licensing - just ask a representative from VMware. I had no problem with that.

  If you already have a professional license, they won't expire. VI licenses are permanent, single period of support may end, but this will not affect any of your VI.

• 3.5 to 5.0 ESX license question

  First of all I apologize for asking a question that is probably buried in a document from somewhere. I'm just my feet wet with VMware and my search-fu skills are still weak in the world of the VM.

  In any case, I'm going to spend a few 2003 VM ESX 3.5 on a our new vCenter infrastructure using the migration tool, (which is a huge help also). Use of the VM 3.5 a license server dedicated, who retired as well as the older ESX servers. So my question is I meet any license "traps" when I start to raise the newly converted virtual machine? I hope that they will at request of licenses for vCenter 5 but I know that licenses are managed differently now. Will it move all files from the old license server and plug them vCenter?

  If your just bring for guests, there will be no license problems.  Licenses are applied to the ESXi host, not the guests.  Ask you manage 3.5 hosts in vCenter5?

  Don't forget, to leave the vHardware for the VI3 guests at 4.  When the conversion is completed, upgrade the VMware first, and then the virtual hardware tools.

  I am facing a problem! I installed 3 HP DL - 380 7 (double take) with ESXi 4.1. I installed a vCenter server, installed my license file (ordered for 8 servers) and said my ESX 3.

  Then I had a problem & reinstalled my ESX servers, from scratch... I forgot to leberate licenses!

  So after reinstalling my 3 servers, I have only 4 CPU on the left instead of 10! & I can't find where is the option for 'invisible' ESX unregistered

  Could someone help me on this matter?

  Simply remove the license and again reinstall the same license. The "assessment" to the ESX host fresh installed license, you can assign temporary before removing the license file.

  In a way VMware licenses has nothing to do with cores/processors available on the host hardware, but only the ability to configure to prompt vCPU?

  No, it's both.  Company like can see beyond the 6 cores per physical processor and allow up to 8vCPU per guest.  See the link I posted above

  Recently, I have been trialing 4 ESX and Virtual Center and the trial period expired before I had finished stable. I don't have the characteristics of vCenter to complete the test so I tried to enter a license key for the free version of ESXi on hosts. It worked and I found myself with ESX 4 (service console) running on a free ESXi license key, only the ESXi features were available. It was only a test, but just curious to know if this is supported, running ESX 4 with free ESXi 4 license key.

  It is not supported.  This license for ESXi is only meant to be used for ESXi and ESX.  The fact that it works is not all that surprising, but the EULA should restrict yourself to just ESXi.

  Look in the vSphere Essentials bundles - they are very affordable if you are a beginner with vSphere.

• Host esx license problem substituting

  Hi all

  I have a problem when I try to replace it by an esx host.

  We have a total of 20 under license issued, 19 in use (9 esx host have 2 cpu, 1 esx host has 1 cpu).

  To add a new host esx (I'll call esx11), I had to unplug and remove a host of VIC (I'll call esx01).

  The result is that esx11 is "unlicensed" and if I make a 'survey of status' using license server tools (FYI License Server is installed on Virtual Center), it always reports as licensed hospitality that I disconnected (esx01).

  Any ideas?

  just because you disconnect will not remove the license.  You must go to the ESX host, under the configuration tab and the features under license.  Change your license source.

  There is no difference in licensing.  The license number is issued for vSphere, and you can use with ESXi or ESX.

  The limitation of the base would be the license include all of the physical cores. It is different from the standard or free license which gives you 4 SMP (max 4 vCPU simultaneously).

  If you use advance or company, then the licence would be only to see max 6 cores processors and ignore the other 2 hearts. You can still use your virtual machine as usual. =)

  Check to ensure that your Infrastructure 3 licenses have been upgraded, if so, use the product keys listed under your account.  If this is not the case, check with your dealer or vmware support.

  Once you have vCenter and an upgraded to vSphere ESX host 4, you should have the possibility to use the fault tolerance as long as you meet all the conditions.

  I have a problem about my license environment.

  I have 6 ESX with 4 CPU (6 x 4 = 24 licenses). Currently, the ESX has the license evaluation Mode, and it has expired.

  Now, I got 12 licenses for 2 CPU (12 x 2 = 24 licenses), but I can't put any of these in my ESX license because the ESX has 4 processors.

  Is it possible to configure 2 licenses for a single host? If not, is it possible to merge the 2 licenses in 1?

  a processor licenses can be combined in one of the 2 or 4 CPUS. You must save the vmware site licenses and then you can combine

  Also look at the number of cores per processor and the type of license you have.

• How to release the unused license?

  I have 6 CPU ESXi licenses and when I add my 1 host in the vCenter, he exhausted 2 licenses processors. However, as I need to change the IP address of the host, I remove it from vCenter. After I added the same host with the new IP address, it is used until another 2 CPU licenses. So my vCenter indicate now 2 license CPU remained, despite only, I added 1 host.

  First of all if you get 2 license registed in the ESX license configuration and then tab, you must remove the license as mentioned in the following, and then restart the vcenter server and then add the license of the particular host

  MEASURES

  Go to the configuration / license section.  Licensed features / ESX License Type.  Click CHANGE.

  Change to Unlicense.  (Note: it will tell you that any license that is held on this server is not removed).  so if you use Server licenses, this should take care of it and 'return' of the license on the server.
