ESX possible powerdown of VIMA?

OK, since your very helpful responses yesterday (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1252435#1252435), my colleague and I have installed VIMA on our server. VMware Infrastructure Client is open and localhost.localdomain, I can start and stop VIMA and a Machine virtual Linux Fedora 8.

We also tested software from Tripp Lite PowerAlert Local (PAL) installed to VIMA, using an internal release candidate. The inverter I have connected right now is just connected via the serial port only on the unit. My VMware Infrastructure Client does not give me the option to add a USB to VIMA, so I can't connect a UPS in this way. Monday or Tuesday, we'll probably also test our power alert Shutdown Agent + SNMP Webcard combination as well. Is there a good reason why users will not want to consider plugging an inverter via the connection in series on the server?

I added William Lam on VIMA scripts, and I'm under the upsVIShutdown.pl of the command line. It works at the first stop, my Linux Fedora 8 VM and then my VIMA, but the area of the ESX Server is never extinguished. Should I wait that the ESX Server will shut down when the script is run from VIMA? Scripts are usually installed on the ESX console or VIMA? I guess I'm missing something about the whole box of VIMA turned off after that virtual machines are off safely.

Thank you

So, it seems you have still some problems resolution with the displayname property of the so-called really your VM VIMA.

First of all, lets check the host or / IP you added your_ESXi_ host in VIMA, you can check by doing the following:

[vi-admin@vima ~]$ sudo vifp listservers
Password:
himalaya.primp-industries.com

You should get back your ESXi host, now if you do, I want that you do the following:

[vi-admin@vima ~]$ vifpinit himalaya.primp-industries.com

again, replace everything that was of the first command to see if vifpinit run and make sure that no error occurs. If it's good so far, then I want you to run the following command:

 /usr/lib/vmware-viperl/apps/vm/vminfo.pl --server himalaya.primp-industries.com | grep Name

This will display the VM (s) currently residing on your ESXi host and provide you with the displayName, which is the same name you'd see in the VI Client.

I suspect that you have just a bad reputation somewhere on what you think, is the real name which is actually stored.

You can also correct the problem where the host is "localhost" by going to configuration of the host-> DNS and routing and make sure that all the information is configured correctly

  • Clarification of the policy of startup SAN

    I would like clarification on the policy of SAN Boot. I was always under the impression that you were supposed to use the storage port WWPN. But what happens if you have many ports of storage from the table (16 for example), this is not possible.

    The purpose of this policy is to simply force the HBA to open a session in the SAN fabric?

    If Yes, can I use one of my real picture or just make one, correct?

    Since all zoning is done by the SAN switch (Brocade/MDS/Nexus) and LUN masking to the level of the table, I think putting the real WWPN to a storage port is not necessary.

    Thanks for any clarification.

    Yes, a 'false' WWPN will work and they connect to the SAN infrastructure... Photos attached show 2 ways to do this... However, if you install Windows 2012/Hyper-V, I suggest using WWPN valid because it seems not to be able to manage multiple ESX possible access paths when you first install...

    I found this-

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1026092

    Solved by using:

    First, perform the following steps:
    1. Determine the WorldID with the command:

      # vm - support - x

    2. Kill the virtual machine by using this command in the root directory:

      # vm - support - X

      It can take more than 30 minutes to put an end to the virtual machine.

      Note
      : this command uses different methods to stop the virtual machine. When you try each method, the command waits a predetermined amount of time. The time-out value can be configured to be 0 by adding - d0 to move to the command vm-support.

    4. Select the host VMware > Configuration > storage > Browse the data store > select vmx. the inside of the file > add to the inventory
  • not getting does not clone/update with VMware Infrastructure client option

    Hi we have an esx3.5 with VIM 2.5

    to authorize the server through a host file, that we had to create a virtual machine on the esx server and install VIM 2.5 above, pointing licensing to the ip address of this server. This vm is winXP so everything works fine.

    When we try to connect to the ip address of the winVista esx server, we get a Manager, without options - clone/updates

    Therefore, in order to make any kind of cloning or updates remotely of machines WinVista you must:

    create a VPN connection on the site with the esx server,

    Connect to the ip address of the esx server,

    Open the VMware Infrastructure client,

    opening of session

    Open the console of the computer that has installed VIM 2.5

    and perform a cloning from inside the virtual Windows XP machine

    as you can see it's pretty heavy. is there another way?

    Thank you!

    Because if I understand your message, you don't see the "Clone/Update" option in the menu when you connect thru customer VI ESX Server. Yes, this isn't. ESX does not provide the functionality without VirtualCenter. Then, must use VirtualCenter, address IP/Hostname in the VI Client to accomplished these tasks.

  • Problem using cdromdisconnect.pl to check for the use of CD-ROM on the virtual machines

    I have a problem with this script, cdromdisconnect.pl and I was hoping someone could help me with it...

    When I run ' cdromdisconnect.pl - my.esx.host - host list op - my.vc.host - server passthroughauth ", I get a"Host not found my.esx.host." But when I run "datacenterlisting.pl - datacenter MyDC" there 'my.esx.host' very well. Am I missing something here? Why is the cdrom script not able to find hosts when other scripts have no problem?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    -monkeedu

    As far as I KNOW, there isn't a way to do a review on a MoRef, right on the property values.  You cannot, for example, match against a property value of the table.  You have to adapt your script logic.  Once you have your view of system host ($host), then you must use the vm ($host-> vm) property to get a list of Virtual Machines.

    You will probably need to change:

    my $host_moRef = $host->{mo_ref}{value};
    #######################################################################################
    # Get all VMs that are currently running on that ESX Server
    #######################################################################################

    my $vm_views = Vim::find_entity_views(view_type => 'VirtualMachine', filter => {'runtime.host' => $host_moRef});
    my $numDevices = 0;
    foreach my $vm_view (@$vm_views) {

    TO:

    #######################################################################################
    # Get all VMs that are currently running on that ESX Server
    #######################################################################################

    my $numDevices = 0;
    my $vm_view;
    foreach (@{$host->vm}) {
         $vm_view = Vim::get_view( mo_ref => $_ );

    There are some optimizations I can suggest to speed it up, but its probably better to work first.

    You can use vi, especially if you know vim, vi will not be much difference.

  • Hot migration is possible with VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 without an ESX server management

    Hot migration is possible with VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 without an ESX server management?
    I wonder for a future issue, a scenario where a system administrator must build a Win2008 + DC on local storage, server
    then, once the physical box is integrated into the class network, the physical box is connected to the classified SAN storage.
    Is it possible to hot - migrate the server Win2008 + CC local storage to SAN storage at this time, with only the
    free version of VMWare ESXi 5.1.0?

    Welcome to the community - I guess that you are looking to do this, while the virtual machine is currently running - this is not possible without a management server, also called vCenetr, but all is not lost because you would be able spend the VM local storage to the San with the VM posered using the client storage management features

  • Is it possible to apply a provisioning in vCenter or ESX level?

    Hi all

    Is it possible to apply a provisioning in vCenter or ESX level?

    Best regards / yazri

    yazri,

    I am unaware of the way in which only a provisioning can be applied to a newly created VMDK. I think that there is a configuration option required for the creation of new virtual machines, it is not possible to 'apply' only a provisioning.

  • NIC expresscard on esx - is it possible?

    Hi all

    On a lab, I only have two powerful laptops (Sager D900F) but with only 1 nic, is it possible to add either an Express card Gigabit NIC on an esx or a USB Ethernet device connected directly to the esx.

    If so, as everyone else has managed to do, in this case, what model, for example.

    Thank you

    There is NOT much choice for the ExpressCard NIC there (in GB at least)... You will have to choose one, try and see...

    Personally, I wouldn't use any laptop for ESX/ESXi running... There's just too many questions that might come up to go down this path (you have already reached the first road block)...

    You will find a lot more people using VMware Workstation to run ESXi facilities nested in try to bare metal on the laptops...

    Personally, you won't find me trying to launch a laboratory using any laptop... Especially when you consider what you spend on a laptop which is close to the power you need (and functions), you can get a good equipped workstation class Tower, which will do the job without problems (or with less far, far, away)...

    I do have a vCenter Server in my lab, I connect to when remote (and need to check something in my lab)... It's also a solution viable, even when it is remote... You can get a decent connection by your ISP speed (I do symmetrical 35Mbps) provided... All serious work, is done when I'm on the spot... As ISO download new files for installs, or anything that would require a transfer of large files my system to the host or store data.

  • Simulation of material on VMWare ESX Server (is it possible?)

    Hello I am a student and write my thesis of license.

    The theme of my thesis is the 'comparison of VMWare ESX Server and Citrix XenServer'.

    After I installed XenServer on the material, I was able to simulate the material and got the possibility of

    OEM-Versions of Microsoft operating systems install VM on XenServer. With this feature can save our customers

    money, because they can use the Versions OEM of MS products provided by our care.

    Now my question! Is it possible to simulate the material on VMWare ESX Server and install the OEM Versions

    or are there other ways how I can install the OEM Versions on VMWare ESX Server?

    I've seen this kind of problem before as well and it's the media. Try to download eval software as an ISO and see if it works.

    I know say you it worked with xenserver then why not with esx - I can't answer this question I can only tell you want that I found worked.

  • Move from 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 possible?

    Hello

    I'm shure, that this question was asked several times already, but I was looking for a long time now and I have nowhere found an answer. The question is simple:

    Is it possible to update via update 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 Manager?

    I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version '' i ''? As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

    Best regards and thank you

    Roland

    I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version 'i '.

    You cannot change the type without a reinstall

    As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...

    It's almost a certainty, he's not going to happen tomorrow, and when that happens they will always support the ESX version.
