ESXi 4.1 for ESXi 5.1 vMotion Question

I have a customer who has two servers esx esx 4.0 is and the other is 4.1. Esx 4.0 is an IBM System x 3650 m2 with an Intel Xeon E5530. Esxi 4.1 is a HP Proliant DL360 G6 with an Intel Xeon E5506.

My question is esxi 5.1 does support vmotion and if yes - that will work with these processors being different?

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Thank you

Ryan

I would like to add that you can certainly configure vMotion between these 2 servers (license to of course), but you may need to activate CVS while they are a bit different revisions.

EVC is configured in the properties of the cluster. You'll want to take the most compatible version on both hosts. To enable it, you may need to turn off some guests on the most recent processor box.

So, I would like to confirm if the original certification exam also follows the same approach or even partially answered options will be accepted, it's ALL or none market allotment for a certain multiple choice question.

  • separate subnets for the ESX/ESXi management ports (vMotion, manage, FT, etc..)

Is it better to have all of your VMKernel ports on the same subnet or subnets separate (one for each role, iSCSI, management, vMotion, FT)?  Are their potential problems with either scenario?  Please include the ESX and ESXi.  I want to get my setup just as it should. Please let me know also if you need additional information.

I have licenses for ESX and ESXi, but I'm leaning toward ESXi are all vSphere 4 Update 1.

    Hello

In fact, you have to use separate subnets for your vmkernel ports but they can run on the same thread. You can share a subnet between a vmkernel and service console, but not between two vmkernels. Just like that. So yes, you need to use several subnets.

  • Configuration of ESXi 4.1 vmotion

    Hi all!

I'm checking a configuration of vSphere 4.1 and I have 3 ESXi 4.1 the hosts in the same cluster with enable HA and DRS.

Each host has 4 FCoE 10 Gb HBA, 2 of them are used to connect to the host for the SAN and the other 2 are used for vmotion in a dedicated vSwitch.

What is the correct configuration of zoning in the fabric for the connections of 2 fibres used for vMotion? I guess that is not necessary to present data on these connections warehouses, for vmotion is necessary as all the hosts of ESXi 'see' each other in the DRS cluster. Fix?

    Thank you

Yes, I had asked for the outputs to confirm on models of pilot.

  • Advanced features of ESXi 4.1 - vMotion, HA and DRS.

    Hi all

I have a dell poweredge 1950 with 2 processors dual core, 8 GB ram and 2 hard drives. I would like to install a virtual laboratory for features in advanced practical such as vMotion, HA and Drs I know I need 2 ESXi host and storage San iSCSI shared to implement.

I have only 1 physical box that has 1 ESXi host installed. I have the vCenter, iSCSI SAN (openfiler) installed in a virtual machine. I have a laptop that has vSphere client to connect to the ESXi host through vCenter.

Is it possible to install 2nd ESXi host in a VM on the ESXi host 1 and perform advanced functions as mentioned above. I'd appreciate your suggestions and advice.

    Thank you

    -rmshah5050.

Can't do anything as an automatic resource pools configuration.

How much memory assign you to virtual ESXi hosts. To properly configure HA you must assign at least ~2.5 GB to hosts.

  • ESXi 4.0 Vmotion howto?

I'm under ESXi 4.0 with two guests. I have several servers on each host. They both use the same shared storage. I read the manual of ESX and that you have configured VMkernel port adapters, but I can't yet do a live migration between hosts. VMotion active poster on both hosts. Documentation I can say is not really a step by step list how configure vmotion and I could not well through forums, Google, etc. on the search for an easy to follow guide. Is there something out there that lists a concise step by step on how to configure vmotion?

RE: "the virtual machine must be powered down for that purpose."

He always says that under the option "change host and data store.  This option is "Storage VMotion".  The message is not related with VMotion.

You should have the "Change host" option available.  This option is "VMotion".  He shouldn't have this message directly underneath.  You should be able to select "Vmotion" and click Next.  Is the button "Next" or "Change host" grayed out?

    3. can you multiple access by 5.5 ESXi host the same data store (located on a San) vmfs using the free version of ESXi 5.5?
Can I use this in a production environment? I have seen some companies test this on a non-production environment. Technically, it works.

    Thank you
    Paul

    Welcome to the community-

    (1) as long as the DRS HA cluster hosts see data even warehouses there will be no problem

    (2) once more, also longer than the nose can see data warehouses including the LUNS as the RDM it home should be without issue.

    (3) Yes multiple instances of the free version of ESXi can access LUNS shared - Yes it can be used in a production environment, but remember you can not handle the free hypervisor with vCenter.

  • ESXi 5.1 vMotion migration of VM with 2 vmdk: a SAN storage and other storage facilities

    Hi all:

I got a two host clusters that uses a shared SAN storage where my VM files are stored. Storage hosts is an aggregation of the two 1 Gbps link

path and so efficient throughput of 2 Gbps.

Now I need to install a virtual machine that will host our proxy server (Squid). Proxy servers needs a flow of large I/O structure of the disk cache. So I'm

Whereas by deploying somehow using two VMDK. One with the operating system and software, say vm.vmdk file and the other to the cache on the disk,

tell the vm - 1.vmdk file.

My idea is to put the file vm.vmdk on the storage, as well as other VM, I got, by putting the vm - 1.vmdk file to local storage, so does not link of 2 Gbps. say that

This SAN storage named "san_storage", host local storage is named 'a_local_storage' and local storage of host B is named 'b_local_storage '. So vm.vmdk is

on "san_storage/vm/vm.vmdk" and is shared both host A and B. say that VM begins to run on host A, vm - 1.vmdk file is "a_local_storage/vm/vm-1.vmdk".

I would like to know is there is a way, by script or so, to change the configuration of the virtual machine in a way which when I do a host migration has to B, the second disc of the host

virtual machine will be disconnected "a_local_storage/vm/vm-1vmdk" and will be linked to "b_local_storage/vm/vm-1.vmdk" at VM startup on host B.

I don't want to copy 'vm - 1.vmdk' from one host to another, because the proxy server parce que le serveur proxy peut peut fills again.

Is it possible to do? Or is - anyone has another solution?

I use ESXi 5.1.0 799733 on the two hosts with a license that allows vMotion and using vCenter 5.1.0.5300 build 947940 to manage.

  • 5.1 ESXi, VLAN and vmotion

    Background:

We had a 3 host cluster 5.1 executed with a unique standard vswitch with all the VLAN enabled on it for a while as all our virtual methods were in the same vlan lets call it 101.  We are now adding a second VLAN to our network, let's just 102.  What I did is the following:

Taking 3rd host mode maintenance, trunking VLAN 101 & 102 in the esxi host3, adding second vm machines on vswitch and vlan pool determined 102 and published original machines of vm pool to set the vlan 101.  Host cluster for trials, closed in maintenance mode.  Put a machine virtual on it put in vm pool 2 that he started has obtained an appropriate ip address, all network communications good, great!  Restore vm pool 1, rebooted, got a vm pool 1 large ip address!

Deleted test vm, replace the cluster host.  Machines automatically starts migration to it (DRS), they have moved very well, but any network connectivity dropped, I had to go to each migrated virtual machine and manually disable the 'connected' box click, press ok, then modify, connected and ok once again and everything worked fine.  No idea why this is happening?  Should I use a distributed switch?  As long as vm networks are named identically on the hosts and have the same connectivity, they should work shouldn't they?

When you say '... VLANS trunked 101 & 102... ", I can assume that you are using the Cisco switches and talk about 802. 1 q?

How you have configured the physical uplink ports. Please check back "portfast spanning-tree trunk" is configured for the ports. For more details, please visit http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004074

  • ESXi VM virtual network question

I have two virtual machines on ESXi

1 Sophos UTM (assigned 'NET' and 'LAN' physical network interface)

2 Ubuntu server (not assigned any physical network interface still)

If I assign a new physical network interface 'LAN2"Sophos and also assign another new interface for ubuntu server network, then they will be connected through a physical cable, ubuntu server will be under sophos. However, I want to know is - it possible to do it with virtual on ESXi because that I have enough physical network interface to which their responsibilities.

    Thank you.

If I understand correctly, you need a direct link between these two VMs running on the same host ESXi!

In this case you don't need no physical connection. Simply create a new vSwitch without any rising (vmnic) and connect two virtual machines to a portgroup VM on this vSwitch.

  • ESXi 5.1 Lab question (resolution/iSCSI discovery)

I have setup a physical environment 2 node ESXi works as expected.

iSCSI, WDS/PXE, DHCP, DNS, LDAP are all setup and running on a Windows Server, vCenter (VM) is configured and works perfectly.

Looking to set up RS using VR through 2 virtual data centers I raised 4 VM I deployed ESXi 5.1 using the WDS/PXE of R2 2013 server and everything worked perfectly (wise deployment).

The use of Kickstart scripts ESXi hosts are fully deployed to VM with 1 GB of storage (sufficient), IP stack, host name, etc. everything is correct.

First number using the "Test management network' fails resolve host names of all 4 systems (Pings from the work of gateway and dns addresses.). But if I ssh in the hosts and the use of nslookup I can solve all well? Whats up with that?

Second question which I think is related, is that I am setting up an iSCSI S/W to each adapter and you have configured ldevs/LUN with chap authentication identically as I did for the physical data center and I can't auto-discovery or entries static to discover the storage provisioned. the IQN name have the hostname in them which I believe is originally a resolution problem. For the Autodiscover I use the IP address of the iSCSI server so there is on the resolution of current names.

All them is on a subnet (255.255.255.0) single 10.10.10.x/24.

Anyone who can get an idea of why this is happening I would appreciate the help!

    Found the problem...

Have a Gateway Appliance ClearOS which has several interfaces causing a loop.

It cleared up and removed the questions.

  • VMWare ESXi host AutoDeploy profile questions 5.1

    All,

Our Organization has just bought a UCS configuration, and we are working to build on the new system. I have scoured the internet looking for a potential solution, but have not found. We get the following operation:

    VM Auto deployment server

    ESXi PXE boot process

Set of rules that applies the profile of home on the connection with the vCenter

We are experiencing a problem where when a host is added to the vCenter, the location of the swap of our host profile file does not apply (the swap file is on a data store that is also configured in the profile of the host). In addition, the vNIC for our vSwitches configuration has two network adapters for standby on all 3 vSwitches. The configuration is the following: two vNIC by switch, the expected host profile configuration is set to active, active. Each vNIC for each vSwitch is on a separate side of the UCS fabric (a and b). Cards network to view DHCP addresses assigned in ranges appropriate for all configurations, but the vNIC is intelligence rather than active, active.

If more information would help to understand this issue, I am happy to provide.

    Thanks in advance.

    Apparently, it's a known issue:

  • ESXi 5 Networking newbie question

    Hi all,

I'm new to ESXi and I need some advice from experts on the network on the ESXi 5 host configuration.

The installation program looks like this.

A HP DL380 G7 server running 3 Server ESXi 5 company 2K8R2 VM, 4 LAN ports on the server, one dedicated to the management network.

I want to set up the connection in the following way:

Each VM should have access to the physical network, but I also want that all three VM will not communicate via physical network interfaces but by intra-Server network basically do not touch physical network for VM VM networks.

If I understand correctly, networking in ESXi if I attribute same vSwitch to all virtual machines they will speak between them via intra network server, but then I'll be able to only affect that one LAN card physical to the vSwitch if my physical switch does not support teaming them and in this case I'm stuck at 1000 Mbit/s for a total throughput of all three VM?

Then I thought to create three vSwitches, assign a physical LAN card to each vSwitch and each VM to his own vSwitch, but in this case each VM will communicate with each other through physical network right?

Next idea was to do it the same way as previously mentioned, but also to create a vSwitch more without a physical NETWORK card assigned to it, connect all three of the computer as a virtual card on VM virtual LAN and have a different for this second network subnet and set up all services on all VM to communicate with each other through this (other) network. Then I would have a few problems with the resolution of name between VM if I reference VM by IP? Or maybe not because they are all in the same field of broadcast just to put another network adapter intra-host higher on the priority list in VM network settings physically map network related?

    Thanks for help.

    Tim wrote:

If you had 1 vSwitch with 2 exchanges, that traffic would be let through the network adapter.

That's right if you have different VLANS on trade, but if they are the same then the traffic will also remain in the vSwitch.

You can have several VMNIC (physical ports on the physical network card) connected to the same vSwitch without problems, even if your physical switch does not support grouping. Just leave politics to the default id 'port' of load balancing.

So create a vSwitch, add vmnic as much as you like, and then connect your virtual machines to the vSwitch. Note that a single virtual machine will not be able to get more than 1 Gbps in flow, but the different virtual machines will span outgoing ports.

    Hello.

The maximum size for a single volume must be 2 TB - 512 bytes, as described in KB 3371739.  Use the RAID Dell utilities to carve up the storage volumes of that size or smaller.
