ESXi 4.1 host / bad disk / IBM 3650 material

Hi all

I have an esxi 4.1 with defective drive host, it is an IBM 3650 material. I lost all the virtual machines in one of the drive due to bad hard drive.

I have set "alarm" to "material state changed" send e-mails in the category 'host '.

But I have not received e-mail.

What is the best way to deal with this?

Hello

This kind of event should be already controlled by the vcenter failure alarm "unable to connect to the storage.

You should check the 'Actions' of this alarm tab, configure it to send an email if this alert occurs.

Check this vmware KB, maybe helps you:

VMware KB: Creation of storage storage redundancy path connectivity alarms / lost in vCenter Server

  • Cannot assign a license to VMware ESXi 5.0 hosts

    Dear all,

I installed vCenter Server 5.0 standard IBM x 3550 M4 and VMware ESXi 5.0 Standard for two M4 IBM 3650 x servers. I can attribute vCenter Server Standard 5 license to vCenter Server 5.0 but I can't affect VMware vSphere 5 Standard licenses for both ESXi 5.0 servers. Each server has 2x6Cores 2.3 GHz CPU (12 cores total). VMware vSphere 5 licenses that we purchase are VMware vSphere 5 Standard for 1 processor (VS5-STD-C) x 12, which is unlimited cores per processor. Can someone tell me what is the problem here and the reason why I still can't assign license to two 5.0 ESXi hosts.

    Rgds,

    Syairus

If I understand correctly you have 12 licenses for 1 CPU each! In order to assign a license to a host of the CPU, the license capacity must be equal to or greater than the number of the host CPU. You can combine licenses in the portal My VMware.

BTW. for two host with 2 CPU each, you need only 4 licenses of CPU (not 12), as processors/sockets are allowed, not carrots.

  • ESXi 4.1 host started crashing every day - including screen image

    Hello world

I'm really at a loss here.  I have an ESXi 4.1 host (free version), who has 4 virtual machines on it. I haven't changed anything on this host recently but Friday it crashed and I had to do a hard reset.  It's the same thing again today.  I have no idea where to start to look at that.  The host hardware is two years. lt is running 6-drive SAS RAID, 24 GB memory and 2 Xeon quad-core processors.  What can I do to try to solve this problem?

    Since the Group:
"The functionality Execute Disable No. run CPU not enabled for this machine.

Please check the BIOS on your ESXi host hardware to see if this option is available (usuaully under CPU options, advanced settings or the warranty on some BIOS white box).  If that options is not available in your BIOS, please feel free to share the material model used (even if it is not on the HCL) as someone there may be able to help.

  • Migrate to ESXi 4.1 hosts to VCenter again

    Hey volks!

Today, I finished with the installation of a new server VCenter 5. There is another VCenter 4 Installation that actually manages our ESXi 4.1 hosts. Now I would like to move the hosts to VCenter 4.1 environment to the new (5) a.

Is there a way without having to move the hosts in Maintenance Mode?

What I read on the web - can I just uninstall the agent, but no guide step by step has been found and I would prevent mistakes when doing. Also, I think that this is not a good way to do it, or?

I'm sure someone did it in the past and can enlighten us on this.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matthias

NAAA it should be simple. Cluster resources can be a problem, but I don't see it as a big deal,

    1. Disconnect host VC4
    2. Remove the host of VC4
    3. Add a host to VC5
    4. and repeat step 1-3 for all remaining army.

vCenter and HA agent will be installed automatically when add you the host to the VC5

  • How can I use Tracert to and ESXi 4.1 host?

How can I use Tracert to and ESXi 4.1 host?  I tried Tracepath and get "command not found", like tracert. I sswear I did this before 3.0 days.  I looked in/usr/sbin not tracepath or tracert.  I don't know I'm missing something very obvious.  I do not have access to this host console, but I ran the "check network connections" of the console and he spent when I place this host.

ESXi is not a Linux console as ESX 3.x did. He uses a tiny console shipped based on busybox and missing most of the commands that would be available in a full Linux installation.

  • ESXi 3.5 host to be used as a Client?

    Hi all

Please forgive the questioning of basic, I'm quite new on the concept and the technology!

I installed ESxi 3.5 on a Dell T810 32-bit Tower Server, I P2V converted to a virtual machine on the same server, I can access the server via the Client assuming VI and get "on line" with VM, etc. using remote desktop etc from my laptop. However, we want to deploy this tower as a Desktop Server effectively. Is it possible to configure ESXi "Host?" as a customer, thet Gets the behavior of a normal workstation?, IE turns in this case, or at least with a few clicks, I have a monitor and Kepboard etc attached, when the server is restarted, etc. it initializes and powers up to the configuration screen.

Thanks much for any help you may offer.

    Myles

ESX/ESXi is virtualization "bare metal". To keep the ESX/ESXi on the host server, you will not have a 'normal' windows environment to begin directly. Even with ESXi, there is only a very limited "gui" that is displayed for the management of the essential elements/aspects of the hypervisor. The ESX/ESXi hosts are designed to reside in data centers and server rooms. Not on the desktop of an end user.

So, no, you will not be able to deploy the ESXi HOST server as a workstation. If you want to deploy as a workstation, you need to install a workstation OS on it, destroying ESXi in the process.

My own ESXi 4 server is probably the most powerful system in my environment. I wouldn't dream of trying to do a 'normal' job He will remain an ESXi host until I have newer, faster, more powerful servers to support ESXi features. At this point, I could convert it to a workstation (it's a Dell Precision Workstation T7400 after all).

If you want people to have access to the server you have converted, give them the URL that is for THAT VM. Or install the client to vCenter on their desktop/workstation computer and give them access to this VM (no admin, just run/use the VM permissions right).

  • ESXi 4.0 PCI Passthrough on IBM x 3650

    Hi all!

Quick question, I was hoping I could get assistance.  II have an IBM x 3650 (no M2) fully patched under ESXi 4.0.  I have also two Dual Port fiber QLogic HBA installed.

When I start the server and newspapers in VSphere, I see all four ports come in the hardware configuration of the server.  However, when I try to help for passthrough for VM, I don't have the option.  I am told 'Host does not support configuring passthrough ".

I am out of luck with this server?  I checked the BIOS setting and noticed that Intel Virtualization in enabled, but it's the only option I see.  Is there something else I'm missing or something I should look for?

    Thank you very much!

"Host does not support configuring passthrough".

    That is right.

I am out of luck with this server?

    Yes, basically.

I checked the BIOS setting and noticed that Intel Virtualization in active

This has nothing to do with the passthrough material, is to virtualize VMS 64-bit on the hosts.  If you want to passthrough, you need hardware that supports, technology later.  Don't know which IBM supports, but I think they are should arrive this month, if not already.

Also it is not necessary to provide direct access to the fiber ports on VM.  You configure the HBA to connect to a San, and you install VMFS on a LUN, the virtual computer has access to.

However, SOME fiber switches are NPIV that allows you to use a virtual machine with a direct access to a fiber RDM device.  You can configure NPIV on a per-VM basis, if your fiber it supports.

  • ESXI 5.1 bad disk performance

    I have two servers.  A Dell r.620 with a h710p running in raid 5 - ESXI 5.1, 799733

When I use Veeam to migrate a virtual server to a former Dell 2950 to the r.620 I get around 50Mbs.

    Then I have a Dell 630 with H330 RAID 5 - ESXI 5.1, 2000251

When I use Veeam to migrate a virtual server of the same 2950 to the R630 I get 9 transfer of Mbs.

Can someone tell me if it's really because has 620 a controller card raid of dough with 1GIG hiding on that?

It would be really 5 times faster?

    Both have the same NIC.

    Thank you

    J

Yes, the battery or the sustained write flash cache makes a huge difference (often 10 X or more) for most RAID controllers. The controller cache option writeback mode, while a controller without this option works in the hollows and write mode. Writeback mode acknowledges the write operation as soon as the data is stored in the cache. For the write-through mode recognition requires that the data has already been written in the disks.

  • My concerns about installing ESXi on a USB Flash Disk

    Hello!

There was a lot of messages about installing esxi hypervisor on a usb flash drive, what I've done and I think it's ok because there's no need to waste expensive disks for installation of a very light bone

But I have a few questions and concerns in this regard. appreciate your answers.

1 - first of all I can't find my DL380 G7 Server internal usb. can someone give me a link or a picture where he is exactly?

2 - Suppose that after boot completely the host, something happens on the usb drive. If nothing happens? I think there should be nothing to worry about, because the hypervisor has been loaded into the memory of the server. Am I wrong?

3 - my concern is to have backup and the ability to restore that very quickly. some time in the past I had a single esxi host. I used powercli and commands appropriate for configuration backup host (I think that the command was something like esx-cfgbackup or like that).

so if the flash has been corrupted, I would replace it with another and restored the settings that

but now I host 4 esxi and vcenter. should I worry about this? How should I have backup? I know that SQL backup database of vcenter and its certificate is sufficient to have a backup of the settings of vcenter but on those who are just to vcenter and which are on the host? just want to say, what should I do to be able to replace a faulty usb disk (esxi is on it) with a new and all get back to work as it was?

Sorry if the questions are easy to answer. I'm just a beginner

and sorry for my bad English

Assuming that I don't have the license for the host profiles, what should I do?

It depends on the complexity of the configuration of the host. You can back up the configuration of the individual hosts or just reconfigure reinstalled once. In a larger environment, you'd probably for example the hosts scripted installation.

Because the server vCenter Server usually runs as a virtual machine, it is a good idea to do an image based backup (using backup vDR or 3 rd-party applications), and - in the case where you use a dedicated SQL Server - certainly back up the database. For the backup and restoration of vCenter Server, you can also take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1023985.

In the rare cases where an SD card fails, you can always vMotion virtual machines to another host and then reinstall the host with a new SD card.

  • New to ESXi ESXi installation USB or local disks operation best practices?

I'm new to Vmware and run a small store, what is the best practice or best method to install the OS ESXi.  I currently have a few that I have installed on the usb stick on the server Board.  After some research it would be better to have two small drives SSD that I can raid with the operating system, then another RAID for the VM data store.  USB is a single source of failure.

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hello

Having the internal hard drives in RAID1 for the o/s will certainly to avoid a single point of failure, as you pointed out correctly. At present the death of your USB key, your host problems quite quickly, and you will need to get a new one and re-install again. You could save your good host configuration and realistically - it does take too long to rebuild a crowd if he dies. Lose other stuff like network configurations and others would however be a pain!

I think I have two SSD internal drives in RAID1 for the o/s is probably overkill. You will have an advantage any speed of startup, but realistically most of the servers restart everything often and once that ESXi is in place and operational it is very little activity on the disks, a config updates every so often and so on. I'd be inclined to use a SSD to create a Cache of the host for the swap drive, like that you can actually use the SSD and get more performance for your money.

Many manufacturers (like Dell) use internal SD cards in RAID1. While SD cards are not known to be very robust, because of the congestion of ESXi and the minimum number of necessary paperwork once installed initially, it makes a less expensive alternative to business class for the o/s disks.

In regards to your data warehouses, having an internal RAID your local disks is best if you use a stand-alone host with no storage attached to the network. You always have the problem of failure of the host if.

    See you soon,.

  • After Update 2, Esxi 5.0 host cannot see storage

I have a HP DL380 g-8 server that was running ESXi 5.0. He had 6 virtual machines running on it for 8 months with no problems. Today I applied the update 2 for ESXi 5.0 and it says the update successfully applied. After the reboot, the server could not detect any storage. When connecting with VSphere client it says "the ESXi host has no persistent storage." Virtual machines are listed as "unknown, 1 unknown unknown 2," etc.

All storage is local. There are four disks are attached to a P420 controller card. When I click on "Storage adapters" in vsphere client, he mentions the card controller as "Patsburg 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller '. I tried a new analysis and it did not work.

I think here, but I have an out of date firmware. I just found this page HP for the P420 with a VIB released a few weeks ago update:

    http://h20000.www2.HP.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en & cc = us & prodTypeId = 18964 & prodSeriesId = 5193414 & swItem = MTX-96dc068234d34bceba2e2e1139 & prodNameId = 5193409 & swEnvOID = 4115 & swLang = 8 & taskId = 135 & mode = 4 & idx = 1

This link describes how to install the firmware, but this particular ESXi host is far away and I can't seem to him physically. I can connect using SSH. So my question is (having never used SCP or updated firmware on ESXi): is it possible to completely remotely via SSH, and if so, how?

If there are any other suggestions, I'm open to them. No matter what to get storage online.

    Thank you!

You should be able to run this command in an SSH session.  As long as SSH is enabled, you should be able to SCP the file above.  WinSCP is a client of SCP Inuit free, for Windows, that should work just fine.

  • Why deploy Auto if nothing is registered on the host hard disk?

    Hello world

We have read many articles and know that deploy Auto load ESXi image directly on the memory of the host, without installing it on the disk hard host. I also use Auto deploy to deploy many hosts of ESXi 5.0, everything works fine until I have restart these hosts ESXi - all gone and these hosts try to boot from the network again and again...

So my question is: why it takes car? and how we can deploy and save the ESXi image on hard drive?

    Thank you very much

    Minh

AutoDeploy can be used - often for diskless hosts - in combination with Host Profiles, which provide the setting for guests. This greatly simplifies the updates and patches. With vSphere Autodeploy 5.1 has been improved to also be able to make deployments of the hosts.

    See http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/auto-deploy.html for more details
