ESXi Homelab on Fujitsu ground Econel 100S 2 - best options?

Hi all

I just bought a Fujitsu ground Econel 100S 2 Server and I'll use it as a small house ESXi lab.

It has a Xeon E3110 (3 GHz, cache 6 MB dual core), 8GB ECC RAM, x 2 250 GB HDD s that can be used in a RAID 0/1, but I hear Internet research that ESXi 5 will not see the drives in RAID, but not sure of the version 6?

In any case, what are my best options for this machine? Especially what ESXi version should I use and should I try to get RAID 0 work or it will be better to use only the 2 drives as 2 separate of data warehouses with VM on each (from a performance point of view).

I haven't used ESXi 3.5, so any advice with this is greatly appreshiated.

Kind regards

Jason

as a laboratory at home, I recommend you to install esxi 6.0.

for performance reasons, I recommend you to do a raid 0 with two drives for maximum i/o performance.

If your raid logical drive is not recognized, you can search on the internet for readers... maybe that's the problem why esxi does not see the disk...

either way I would use iso custom of fujitsu... There are probably several drivers for your hardware

  • ESXi 4.1 - pics Win2k8R2 VM 100% CPU

I have a Dell R410 server with 2 x E5620 2.5 Ghz processor sockets.  As by the Vsphere client, given that each outlet has 4 cores and hyper threading is enabled, I have 16 logical processors = about 17 k MHZ at my disposal.

My collegeue has created a virtual win2k8r2 with 1 virtual processor machine.  For this particular VM on the 'Summary' tab, 'Resources' box shows the "consumed" host CPU ranges from 500-2 500 MHZ.  To my knowledge all other ESXi CPU settings (such as Reserved/limit) for this virtual machine have been left to the default values.

When I connect to the console of windows for this virtual machine, the properties of the computer says processor: Xeon E5630 2.53 GHz.  I then launch Manager tasks and on the performance tab, and not to shows me only one box for the CPU usage history as if it had only 1 CPU multi-threading.

    Issues related to the:

When the graph shows that the CPU spikes on a regular basis 100% than what it means?  As I said above, the host CPU speed varies between 500-2 500 MHZ.  Why is does not use the other 15 Mhz k?  What is 1 virtual processor depending on what I should see boxes for the number of CPUS in the Task Manager?

I'm a bit lost when it comes to all of these variant of CPU types references or how he translates what should I see in Windows Task Manager.

for example, is the highest 1 virtual CPU assigned to my VM = 1 socket physical CPU, which in my case is equal to 4 physical cores or 8 CPU "virtual" because of the hyper-threading which must be equal to 8 boxes of CPU usage in the Manager of tasks in windows?

Details on the above would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - now confuse you more - a virtual cpu (VCPU) is scheduled for a logical processor (LCPU). A LCPU can beither a physical core or a hyperthreading - so the only one VCPU is scheduled on one of the 16 LCPUs present your host. This means that a single VCPU will have access to a maximum of 2.5 - GHz

  • Install ESXi 4 in fujitsu Bx620 S6

    Hello

    I want to install ESXi4 on a Server Blade BX620 S6 Fujitsu.

The start of server does me not ESXi as an option in the list of the OS. It gives me only ESX.

So how can I install ESXi 4 on this server by using the server to start

No worries if it is in the list the CD will work just fine (it's so much different from windows, etc.). worst case if some drivers as a network is not detected you may just need to install manually (very rare). =)

    Greetings,

I improved my esxi U1 5.0 to 5.1 and attempted to create a new virtual machine in hopes of using the new version of material 9.

Using the standard and Custom options I been unable to create a Version 9 hardware VM by default.

The only option I had was manually upgrade to version 9 once the virtual machine was created.

Any thought or is - this as planned? I need to reinstall from scratch, my host?

To create virtual machines with HW version 9, you can use the Web Client, rather than the windows based Client vSphere.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

    Hi forum,

I just installed a hypervisor 5.5 ESXi on a HP Server a test socket.

It works great and I could license with free ESXi license.

Now, I would like to upgrade an acual ESXi 5.1 Fujitsu server with two explosion (2 x Xeon E5-2630 6 c/12 t) and 64 GB of RAM.

The server is in eval mode 60 days of ESXi 5.1 because of the 64 GB of Ram. The license hypervisor free ESXi 5.1 only works for 32 GB of Ram, so I couldn't activate it.

Is it possible to update AND license the machine two struggling with ESXi hypervisor from 5.5?

My housing a real test-system shows that the license is valid for a power outlet. Can I register two free hypervisor 5.5 licenses on the Fujitsu 2-socket-server or is a license enough.

In the worst case, it does not work with 5.5

I only have a single ESXi server, so I need a vCenter and so on.

At would be in your opinion?

  • Poor ESXi 4 NFS Datastore Performance with various NAS systems

    Hello!

In testing, I found that I get between a half and a quarter of the e/s inside a guest performance when ESXi 4 systems connect to the using NFS data store if the clients connect to the exact same NFS share.  However, I don't see this effect if the data store using iSCSI or local storage.  This has been reproduced with different systems running ESXi 4 and NAS systems.

My test is very simple.  I created naked CentOS 5.4 minimum installation (completely updated 07/04/2010) with VMware Tools loaded and the creation time of a file of 256 MB using jj.  I create the file on the root (a VMDK stored in different data warehouses) partition or a directory of the NAS mounted via NFS, directly in the comments

My crucial test configuration consists of a single test PC (Intel 3.0 GHz Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU with a single Intel 82567LM-3 Gigabit NC and 4 GB RAM) running ESXi 4 connected to a printer HP Procurve 1810 - 24 G, which is connected to a VIA EPIA M700 NAS system running OpenFiler 2.3 with two 1.5 to 7200 tr / MIN SATA disks configured in front of software RAID 1 and dual Gigabit Ethernet NIC.  However, I have reproduced it with different ESXi PC and NAS systems.

This is a release of one of the tests.  In this case, the VMDK is a store of data stored on the NAS via NFS:

    -

    root@iridium /sync #; Sync; Sync; time {dd if = / dev/zero of = bs = 1 M count = test.txt 256 sync; sync; sync ;}}

The first dd is a VMDK stored in a connected via NFS data store.  The dd ends almost immediately, but the synchronization takes nearly 40 seconds!  It's less than 7 MB per second transfer rate: very slow.  Then I get the exact same NFS share that ESXi is used to store data directly in the comments and repeat the DD.  As you can see, the SD is longer and the synchronization takes no real time (as befits a NFS share with active sync), and the whole process takes less than 10 seconds: this is four times faster!

I don't see these results on data warehouses mounted via NFS.  For example, here is a test on the guest even running from a mounted via iSCSI data store (using the exact same SIN):

    root@iridium /sync #; Sync; Sync; time {dd if = / dev/zero of = bs = 1 M count = test.txt 256 sync; sync; sync ;}}

As you can see, the performance of NFS direct comments for each of the three are very consistent.  ISCSI and the performance of the store local data disk are both a bit better than that - as I expect.  But the mounted via NFS data store gets only a fraction of the perfomance of the any of them.  Obviously, something is wrong.

I was able to reproduce this effect with an Iomega Ix4 - 200 d as well.  The difference is not as dramatic, butalways important and consistent.  Here is a test of a guest of CentOS using a VMDK stored in a data store provided by an Ix4 - 200 d via NFS:-.

Once more, the direct NFS mount gives very consistent results.  But using the diskette provided by ESXi on a mounted NFS datastore gives still worse results.  They are not as terrible as OpenFiler test results, but they are constantly between 60% and 100% longer.

Why is this?  What I've read, NFS performace is supposed to be within a few percent of the iSCSI performance, and yet I see between 60% and 400% worse performance.  And this isn't a case of the SIN is not able to provide correct NFS performance.  When I connect to the NAS via NFS directly inside the guest, I see much better than when ESXi connects to the same NAS (the same proportion!) via NFS.

The configuration of ESXi (network and network cards) is 100% stock.  There is no VLAN in place, etc., and ESXi system has only one

Single Gigabit adapter.  It is certainly not optimal, but it doesn't seem to me to be able to explain why a virtualized guest is able to get a lot better performance NFS as ESXi itself to the same NAS.  After all, they both use the same exact suboptimal network configuration...

Thank you very much for your help.  I would be grateful any idea or advice, you might be able to give me.

    Hi all

It is very definitely a performance O_Sync problem. It is well known that NFS VMware shops still use O_Sync for writes little matter what share put for a default value. VMware uses a custom file locking system so you really can't compare it to a normal NFS share connection to a different NFS client.

I have validated that the performance will be good if you have an SSD cache or storage target with enough reliable battery backup.

  • How to get a regular clock (100 MHz, 10 MHz to 20 MHz) of the NI 4462 PCI?

Is it possible to extract a regular clock, high frequency of the 4462 OR?

I need to synchronize with another card (a PulseBlaster), which requires a 100 MHz clock: every card can be the main source, but they must stay perfectly synchronized.

(Both cards have on-board crystal oscillator modules of 100 MHz; one of the PulseBlaster is nested, would be so easy to connect a source external intead)

I use the PCI version, so the star PXI 10 MHz clock is not available. The 10 MHz or 20 MHz clocks that DAQmx usually exports seem not to be available for routing on this device.

I can't use the Sampleclock, because it is variable (~ 25.6 MHz, changing with sample-freq) and because it is not active when the 4462 is actually measurements.

In addition, this clock must be either 100 MHz, or a whole simple fraction of it (e.g. 10 MHz, so that a PLL can re - generate the 100 MHz).

At the present time, the best option seems to be to solder on the 4462 output pin quartz oscillator - but it's a really ugly way do... has anyone had an experience to make relevant changes?

Is there a better place to connect to? I would prefer to use the RTSI bus connector, but despite tempting advice in the documentation, it seems not possible to get out of the 10/20 MHz master time base: there is

an axis called RTSI7/RTSI_OSC, but it is a permanent decline.

    Thanks for your help.

    Nick Dear,

Thanks a lot for your help. As you say, this confirms what I already knew.

But we really need keep everything in harmony. So, here is what I did, which should hopefully help someone else in the same position.

The circuit is very simple, using a FIN1001 LVDS line driver. It is a SOT-23 package. Connections are the following:

    * Din connects to the output of oscillator 100 MHz (TC0-2104, pin 4).

    * Gnd connects to the Earth (C210, lower)

    * + 3v3 connects to the more accessible place, that TCO-2104, PIN 6.  [The 3V3 regulator is on the back of the map]

    * FIN1001 food is decoupled with a 0.1uF adjacent capacitor.

    * Dout + and Dout-are connected to a short (30cm long) of the unshielded, twisted pair made of wire 0.7 mm PTFE. (Z ~ 110 ohms)

Photograph is attached. The SOT-23 package is physically secure, with a tiny drop of cyano, C210 and mounted on his back.

The receiver uses a FIN1002 receiver, finished with 100 ohm twisted pair and uses a 74VHC04 to convert 3.3V 5V TTL.

It is mounted on a 14 pin DIL socket, to plug directly into the socket on the other card PCI which normally has its own oscillator module.

Result: everything works, and I have a 100 MHz clock available to drive the other timing card.

You can create something pretty close to site Web of Harry menu using an Accordion widget, which can be set to the 100% browser width.
