esxi xtremio question

Issue. San group LUNS mapped to xtremio.  We could add data warehouses.  I see that what follows below in the devices section of storage to the host.  I need to remove the data stores that I made this device rest however.  I don't see all remove or detach the option for this side of vmware.  Does anyone know how this unit is supposed to be deleted?  The san guys are supposed to remove at their end and if so where in xtremio they remove?

To remove the controller, you must remove the zoning so that ESXi hosts is not a connection to the storage system.

  • ESXi licensing question

I have ESXi 5.0 upwards and running with a new installation, leva Vsphere client and go and I cannot figure out where to put my license key.  In 4.0, it is under the administration, but in 5.0, I just roles and newspapers, no license.  If someone can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

I feel like this is a stupid question and miss me just something, but for the life of me, I can't find where to put the license.  And, Yes, I searched on the community.

    1. Connection to the ESXi 5.0 directly using vSphere Client host.
    2. Click host ESXi 5.0 in the inventory, and then choose the Configuration tab.
    3. In the configuration tab click allowed under the software features.
    4. On the right side you will see change the hyperlink, click on it.
    5. Click on assign a new license key to the host, and then click the Enter key
    6. Enter the license key, and then click OK twice.
    7. Now you should see all the features of the product in your license.
  • vSphere/ESXi licensing questions

I have improved my Foundation 2.5 Server vCenter to vSphere 4.0. The Foundation Server managed a single host VMware ESXi 3.5. After I updated, I added a HP ESXi 4.0 host. ESXi 3.5 host gets its license to a central license server. ESXi 4.0 host has a 60-day evaluation license. I looked at the license for the HP ESXi host tab and noticed that the only licensing option is to enter a key. My first question is, ' is it possible to use a centralized with vSphere 4.0 and ESXi 4.0 license server? I downloaded the distribution for the ESXi 4.0 HP host so that I can get for my HP hardware monitoring agents. I have to go back to HP to get a key for this host?

    Thank you

    Greg

The license server is necessary unless you continue to use 3.5 hosts.

ESXi 4 can be a free license - sign up for vmware for a free license code - but it can then be managed from vCentreServer, only the direct vSphereClient, which has characteristics of low-cut.  Having said that there are many uses for the features single and manage only one host at a time by the customer.

  • ESXi 4 - questions RAID - ASUS RS700-E6/RS4

I have dabbled with virtualization for a few years now, but he must admit from the outset that I am new to the world of ESXi.

Our company is you want to replace the 4 servers of aging with a new beefier configuration running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x 64.  After doing some research and making reference to the list of ESXi 4 HCL, decide us pick the server next stop of the HCL:

    ASUS RS700-E6/RS4

    2 x Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26 GHz LGA 1366

    8 x CORSAIR 2 GB 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 ECC

    3 x Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1 TB 7200 tr / MIN SATA 3.0 GB/s

The server hardware is not bad.  I know that's not the greatest, but it's more than enough to meet our needs.

So here's the question: I can't get the ESXi software to detect the matrix RAID which has been implemented.  I tried to use RAID 5/10 configurations and for the life of me, cannot get the software to detect the hard disks as a single disk.  When Setup runs, it asks that one of the physical install disks to, rather than install them in the table.  This is quite annoying, because we need this configuration for redundancy (in the case of a tragic failure.  The server uses the following controller technology:

    SATA controller:

    Intel® ICH10R:

    6 300 MB/s SATA2 ports

Intel Matrix Storage Manager (for Windows only)

    (Support RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5 software)

    LSI MegaRAID® (for Linux/Windows)

    (Software support RAID 0, 1, 10)

    SAS controller:

    Optional:

Card ASUS PIKE 1064E 4-port SAS RAID

Card Asus PIKE 1078 8 ports SAS HW RAID

Currently, I am using Insider Software RAID (on board).  Is it necessary to use hardware RAID for correct detection?

Does anyone have experience with this?

    cipacs wrote:

Not that I wish not to take your word on it, but is there a document which confirms that the hardware raid levels is necessary?

Not that I know, but everyone down here can confirm that it has NO software RAID supported in ESX, it has never been argued.

He's already happy that you can even use your built-in chipset ICH10 controller.

Hardware RAID is expensive for a reason, there is an additional processor, which unloads the CPU. Software RAID uses your hosts, a CPU CPU already, you normally want the additional tax that you need for your virtual machines.

Regarding your card RAID Pike, it doesn't seem like the HCL, so I would say that this is not supported.

Or wait, it seems that the RAID Pike map is a LSI controller renamed with a chipset 1064/1078 who expected to work. However, in your case I make sure and get confirmation from ASUS that it works with vSphere before ordering.

While you're at it, get a sustained unit (BBU) battery with the controller as it makes a huge difference in performance that you can then activate the write back cache.

  • Upgrade to ESXi 4 Questions

    Hello

I'm looking to upgrade a few customers ESX version 3.02 and 3.5 and ESXi 4.0. All stand-alone servers have the operating system installed on local mirrored disks and are virtual machine hosted on a different set of RAID, RAID 10 or RAID 5 array. I have a few questions about it.

    1. some of the systems are autonomous, and as such I am aware that the virtual machine will be must be saved using the converter and then proceed to a clean install of ESXi 4. This applies in the case where virtual machines are hosted on a different picture with the stand-alone server? I thought that installing ESXi will be only on wright the partition is installed on.

    2. are there procedures or install documents for installation to a disc of ESXi ESXi USB (currently in production). I had a few problems with the devices USB HP and believe the disks option searched local an avenue a lot more reliable., unfortunately, there is a slight power increase.

Thanks in advance for any response.

    Concerning

    Joe

Because the virtual machines are hosted on a different RAID level, you don't bother to reinstall ESX/ESXi.

Install ESXi on the first LUN where you do not have virtual machines. While the installation format the second LUN where you have VMs. Once installation is complete, you will be able to access virtual machines using the VI Client or Virtual Center.

To transfer the ESXi from a USB on the DISC, the only thing you must make sure that is who do not have the same facilities of ESXi on USB and DRIVE in parallel. This will cause PANIC when you try to start in one of the facilities.

I think you have two LUNS in this case also so that you can preserve a LUN to the virtual machine and use it to install ESXi.

  • ESXI 4 Questions

Well, I got installed ESXI which was the easy part... The hardest part so far is to find things that... I went to the server via another computer and download the tools, he said. The tool is the thing of vsphere that apparently is not free or ESXI is not free I can't really say that because it indicates just that theres a 60 day trial... anyway, my questions are the following:

    1. the only way I could get one of these virtual machines to load from an ISO file image is I have is to run the virtual machine, let it do the verification for remote loader, then reset the machine and pressing f2. This gives me enough time to go and click the cd-rom, load my iso and then exit the bios to load successfully Setup for windows/linux... Is there an easier way to do this? I really don't understand why you can't just mount the image...

    2. how exactly do you go about restoring and backup of stuff... ? & lt;-I'm mainly testing such things for my work and his between Hyper-V and this... I read theres other tools or something but you I have to pay for them, and my job is unwilling to cough money up until a final decision is rendered. It is the first virtualization server that our work will have and I head the project. The only thing is that everyone is incomplete on that and wants to be shown how this all works. I used vmware things before, but it has always been a workstation configuration. Client/server thing quite new to me.

    3. I figured out how to get the "images" on the server, but exactly how to download stuff to it? & lt; -I've read yet still theres a jump, skip and jump around it, but is it not a function inside this program vsphere that does? I activated the SSH but the server does not support ftping through the ssh tunnel.

4 are free tools for this free ESXI and ESXI server are itself? I was under the understanding but its either the server or the vsphere program which is not free. & lt; -the only thing is that it doesn't show anywhere to enter a key for the server or the vsphere program, that is why I am confused which one is really...

5 is this really all that useful and more telling me that my VM machines are work/letting see me them & control machine vsphere virtual machine "hardware"... So far, I have not found all the features besides that...

The server it is all running on is also a dual opteron quad with 32gigs of ram and 8 x RE3 1 TB Raid 5, but this raid is only temporary and will probably soon be promoted to a 16 x Raid 6...

    6. is it really strong enough to run a small sql, old print server, old server ts server and a little other sql server?

    (1) you can, if you download the ISO in a store, you can change the configuration of your virtual machine and set the CD rom device to ISO. This makes persistent between restarts, rather than fix the console level. Just like a physical machine if there is already an image of the operating system at this time where you need to go into the virtual bios and set the boot order.

    (2) several different ways according to your storage and your products, you have access to. The simpler conceptualy is to simply treat it as a physical node and install your backup application to it and save them in the same way that you would with a physical. Alternitivly there are products vmware and other products for backup (VCB (now DPM)) which will take a 'snapshot' of the virtual, consolidate the disc and turn off the ESX Server. Some of them have a cost associated with their good

    (3) when it is connected to your host with CIV simply select a store of data (via configuration or in your inventory) right click and choose 'Browse the data store' you FTP as options in there like folders and load and download files/folders

    (4) ESXI is free just sign up for a (free) key and Server license and you are good to go at this time. The Vsphere Client is free, no worries.

    (5) more than enough, most of the time ESXi is a fully functional virtualization platform, we run 300 + virtual machines (150-200 running loads of production, Primarly SQL and Exchange) If you have the right configuration and the equipment you will be good to go. Don't forget your hardware bottlenecks and plan them for the future if virtualization is an impressive tool, but it can be a challenge for 'rat hunting' Performance issues there are many links in the chain. I would like to emphasize that the bottleneck of disk and CPU contention has been more difficult to wrap around the action and determine both maintain good your ratio and don't forget that a shared storage (pin count) are your friends for good performance

  • ESX and ESXi - OS Question

I understand that ESXi is OS independent due to the removal of the "Service Console", which is based on Linux.  My question is "until this means I don't need Linux to install ESXi? and what does it need to be installed on the physical host computer or it could be a VM as well? and finally is - anyone know where I can get a video of how on this configuration?

ESX (i) are two metal blades installed.

  • ESXi network question

I have an ESXi server with 2 VM. The server has 2 network cards. What is the best way to configure these for the most effective. Can I assign a map to a virtual computer and another card on the other virtual machine? Also, these servers talk to each other much. That's why I have them grouped together on the same server ESXi. Will this configuration Dungeon local traffic on the server rather than on the network?

I guess my question is what is ideal and best practices of this situation?

    Thank you.

For a host NIC 2, this configuration is fine.  ESXi will be outbound connections to balance and for communication between 2 virtual machines that traffic will not even hit the natachasery.   According to your physical switches, you can configure incoming load, thus balancing, but you will probably be fine.

  • Is ESXi training question?

I develop a course for 400 + internal clients, most field technicians, on VI3 ESX.  I want to take my installation class ESX, through remote management, advanced features of VI3 such as DRS, HA and backup.

My question is this - without a software budget for this training, ESXi will meet my needs?  Requirements include:

1 should install on a guest existing instead of bare metal OS (operating system Windows are easy to find for this requirement).

2 must "look like" complete VMware ESX as much as possible (i.e. what will be these field technicians in the field).

3 must have conditions of licence that will not time-out.  It wouldn't be good if the license agreement expires in the middle of a class.

4 must support all the features of VI3, including those advanced such as VMotion, DRS, HA etc.  I need to teach these features.

5 must be lenient regarding the material.  It would be nice to establish a laboratory VI3 using materials of odds and ends, although I have an ethernet based on Linux NAS (Synology).

6 may grant licenses of the advanced features, but I have no provision for the purchase of advanced features.  Essentially, I am bounded to freeware.

Thanks for you in advance - of entry is ESXi my answer?

    Hello

ESXi installed on bare metal, after you install ESXi on bare metal, you can create virtual machines on top of ESXi to include operating systems you see in the slides.

    Thank you

  • Free ESXi version question.

    Hello.

I'm looking to adapt the free version of ESXi.

I checked the limitation of the free version, but I do not see a feature available

Please let me know what features can I use?

    Thank you.

You can deploy and run virtual machines on it. That's basically all

Most of these characteristics of fantasy of the paid license will require a vCenter and is not available for the free version.

the features it will show in the license tab in client vSpere is:

-Up to 32 GB of memory (hardware RAM in the host server)

-Up to 8-way virtual SMP (which means that you can create virtual machines with 8 virtual processors)

  • Install ESXi - small Question.

    Hello

You want to install ESXi 5 on a USB to a HP Server. The server doesn't have a CDrom drive.

Can I install ESXi on a USB stick on another computer and then plug in the USB on the HP Server?

    Sam

    Hello

Why don't install you on USB on USB?

Download http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ to make your USB bootable with the ESXi ISO 1 key, plug it into the server, launch the installation and choose as the target key USB 2.

P.S. an alternative to linuxliveusb is this one: UNetbootin - homepage and downloads

  • Kickstart ESXi 5 question

    Hello

I am trying to automate the process of installing my ESXi servers, but I encountered a problem that I can't solve.

I am currently pxe boot the installation media and passing a startup script to configure the basic settings. In the kickstart file I have a % POST section that comes in contact with a Web server to tell me installation is complete. This action then unstages the PXE environment, so it does not work through Setup again.

But by default, it appears that port 80 is open outgoing and not port 443 in the vmkernel.

My problem is that I have to do a HTTPS GET (not a HTTP GET) of the % of the ks script message part, but the traffic never leaves the server. At first, I thought it was a matter of ssl because of the preinstallation environment, but I changed the https port 443 to 80 on the Web server and everything works as expected and traffic is sent over https (port 80) as you wish.

I tried to run esxcli to clear the firewall rules, but I get an error of local connection, so it does not appear that I can

Does anyone know if it is possible to make a https outbound connection during the installation % POST section?

    My current post section:

    % post - interpreter = python

    Import os, httplib

    Mac = os.popen (\'esxcfg-nics-l | grep vmnic0 | awk \\\'{print $7}\\\'\').read ())

    H1 = httplib. HTTPSConnection ("192.168.3.10")

    H1. Request (\'GET\', \'/rest/server/unstage/\'+mac.replace (\':-',-'--'))

    H1. GetResponse()

    firstboot % - interpreter = python

    Import os, httplib

    Mac = os.popen (\'esxcfg-nics-l | grep vmnic0 | awk \\\'{print $7}\\\'\').read ())

    H1 = httplib. HTTPSConnection ("192.168.3.10")

    H1. Request (\'GET\', \'/rest/server/activate/\'+mac.replace (\':-',-'--'))

    H1. GetResponse()'

I hope that all this is logic, and thank you guys!

Try to use localcli (instead of esxcli) to disable the firewall.

  • ESXi license question

I need the trial version of esxi which includes vmotion. I enterd my free license and the trial is expired. If I reinstall the software on my dell esxi 2950 shall she replaces the license and return to the mode of trial. I will also be able to delete my current VM on this machine. OT is a failure and I need vmotion their judgment to another host

    > bottom line, if I reinstall and keep the data safe I do it. However, I might try to get vmware to provide me with a temporary license. I now have a paid license for more than 20 processors. I'm just on a limited budget and none of them have vmotion

If you paste into the installation CD and run a 'install' it will wipe everything.   If you choose the repair facility of the database on the installation disc is preserved.   You can also reset the configuration of the host of the DCUI that has removed the config.  With the reboot and repair you must re-register your virtual machines.

  • ESXi ISCSI questions

    Hi all

I'm trying to set up my ESXi with Dell EqualLogic SAN environment. I have a switch connecting servers and the SAN, but use an ID VLAN for ISCSI traffic. I SAN connected to ports which is assigned to the VLAN and servers vmnic0 so. I use vmnic4 to my network of mangement. I plugged my computer live VIRTUAL LAN ports and has managed to establish a connection with the ISCSI LUN. However, when I go to ping the ISCSI array on the ESXi host, it will not ping. I have the setup of the VMKernel port on vSwitch1 mapped the physical interface vmnic0, am I missing something, why can't I don't ping table.

Yes, same segment. The IP addresses of 10.80.0.1 to 10.80.0.31 will be on the same network. As ESX learns that the management interface is on the San, if up communication there. You will need to place your management network in an IP address above 33 or change your San.
