ESXi5: File server: 8TB iSCSI LUN

I'll put up an ESXi5 and plan to host my server files on it. The file server uses storing a Raid6 NAS available on iSCSI (with MPIO).

The server storage is about 8 TB, which will be shared via a Windows 2008R2 Guest VM.

Now I need to find the best options to expose the storage for Windows.

Looks like my options are:

-Use VMFS on iSCSI and vmdk files ordinary LUN.

-Use RDM (do not know if it works with iSCSI) and provide a RAW disk to the vm file server.

-Use of iSCSI directly from the Windows VM (can cause a high CPU utilization), prove less effective.

The most common and options of would apply we would be the first option, however I would be worried to have my WHOLE being in a single VMDK file file server (or several)? If it gets corrupted, I would I lose its content business? Is this something that happens? Especially since this is managed ethernet (iSCSI)?

Really this all come down to: vmdk is safe, and is there a way to get it back where the vmdk file is corrupt (in the same case).

Additional info:

I didn't need the partition of data to be snapshoted if I snapshot files server.

Thank you!

I mounted the iscsi Target inside the bone of the VM. Works very well. I also have a secondary backup iscsi NAS for increased security outside (even RAID 6 is not flawless) and I do weekly backups of my virtual machines to a different data store. Storage of the user in a vmdk files is a bad choice. If all this is corrupt (or just the OS) you will have a hard time to retrieve data from a VMFS partition. There are very few options to read under Windows or Linux. Better safe than sorry

  • ESXi5 + iSCSI NAS with MPIO, fairly reliable for file server?

I look at the different options to learn where to run a file server. The most logical choice would be to run a Windows Server 2008R2 in an ESX host using the esx storage, however the esx use accesed by iSCSI NAS storage. I'm worried about losing files due to corruption of either the VMFS or VM-file, this could happen with any type of storage, but the fact that the system of whole files be stored in a single VMdisk care.

I have a few other options, such as:

    (1) host the files directly on the NAS Server (it is supported)

    (2) set up a number of logic of the NAS unit directly in the comments of Windows Server (avoiding the use of a VM disk)

The approach let ESXi dealing with iSCSI would be more integrated, but I will be more at risk? If something happens to the VMdisk I would lose all the files it contains, it is probably something (power loss, iscsi network failure?), are there any tools to recover a corrupted vmdisk?

    Thank you

You'll be fine using an iSCSI LUN in ESX.  Your NAS device should be the biggest concern (if you lose the storage, you would lose any protocol any way).  Just make sure that it is a business device.  You could also potentially use NFS from your NAS device (if supported).  As with any environment, make sure that you back up!  You will not be at risk using iSCSI as an RDM.

  • How to clean and do a fresh install with attached iscsi LUN?

I intend to migrate both esx 4.1 with esxi5.1 hosts before you wipe and do a clean install.  Each host is connected to two iscis without, with 4 LUNS of each SAN attached to each host.  Each lun
spread over 3 degrees is. I plan on vmotion (not storage vmotion) guests from one host to another to make the upgrade.  I'm stuck on the determination of what will happen to the iSCSI LUNS after I
upgrade to esxi5.1 guests.  It seems that I should just be able to reattach, but I'm not sure.  Can I just attach the LUNS to the new installation 5.1 hosts and see all the
VMDK intact, or is there something that I am on?

And should the migrated to another host virtual machine continues to run on the iscsi san, while I upgrade of the host, they were released since then?  It seems that storage must be removed from the process as the LUNS
should not remain attached to the host after it is cleared and the iqn name no longer exists.

Am that I on the right track here?  What Miss me?

jackjack2, understand you this? I went ahead and moved to esxi 5.0 U2 of ESX 3.5 u5. Had to perform clean install and I have an iSCSI SAN. That's what I did:

1 a taken a screenshot from all my ESX host configurations. Go to configuration-> software adapter-> click on the iSCSI--> properties--> iqn copy map and alias-> click the dynamic discovery tab and note any IP address. You may need these IPs with the discovery of data warehouses later.

    2. after having documented the configs, put the host in maintenance mode.

    3. after maintenance, remove the host from the vcenter server. Connect directly to the host and close.

    4. remove all the network cables. Cable marking help before you detach the cables.

    5. clean install esxi 5.0.

    6. after installation, before rebooting, set the network cables.

    7. configure and test the management network. If your network management test fails, see if you have anything that is entered in the id vlan. Chances are that your port is not shared resources in the physical switch. In this case, remove the id vlan (during the configuration management network) work.

8 bring the vcenter server host.

9 configure the network, dns, time, etc.

10 Add a software iSCSI adapter. This card will have a new iqn. Either you provide this iqn to your SAN administrator so that it can update side SAN, or you can use the old iqn name.

    11. in my case, I made a copy of the new iqn and then deleted. Entered the old iqn name obtained in step 1. Additionally, entered the alias (since one was present before). After that, a new analysis and update still does not fill in data warehouses. So, I went to the properties of the iSCSI adapter and then discovered added tab dynamic addresses IP that did not exist before (otherwise, you will need to enter the virtual IP address of the cluster that you data store (s) belong to). Once the IP addresses have been added to the dynamic discovery tab, he asked if I wanted to rescan the HBAs. I said yes and viola! my data stores have been populated.

12 Add the host to the cluster.

Note that you can add iSCSI adapter when you affiliate you the host to the cluster. However, in this case HA will not be happy because no heartbeat of data storages will be detected. In addition, when data warehouses are discovered it may appear initially as not mounted. Don't panic. After a minute or two it will be mounted.

    I hope this helps!

  • Planning of a file server

    Hi guys,.

I plan on building a file server on my 5.1 ESXi and just want to make sure I'm the right path. Hope you can give me a counselor here.

    ESXi:

    5.1 (build 799733)

    2 x Intel Xeon E5606

    Supermicro X8DT3 Council

    48 GB OF RAM

    QLogic QLE4062C

    Virtual machine:

    Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

    8 vCPU

    4096 MB RAM

    stored at DAS RAID6

Data (files Office, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) is located in an iSCSI SAN. There is only one target connected to the ESXi host with LUN 12 (50 GB smaller, more 650 GB). The volumes are attached to the virtual machine as pRDM.

What is a good way to do this? Or would you recommend me differently?

If you need more information, please let me know.

    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the community - I don't think you'll need 8 vCPUs ofr your VM - I would start with 1 or 2 at most - any other looks good.

  • Creating a virtual file server on ESXi. Limit of 2 TB will be a problem?

    Hello

I'm planning to virtualize a couple of my servers, but some have

questions about the size limit of 2 TB for volumes on ESXi. I guess that let

me tell you what I want to do and you would be grateful if you can tell me

If it's possible or not, and if yes, what is the best way to implement.

I'm new to VM is so patient with me if I do not use terminology

    correctly.

I want to virtualize my file server. For now, it is a physical

Server that connects to an iSCSI SAN (Dell PowerVault MD3000i) network, and the

LUNS assigned to it is about 5 TBs. To be more precise, the server has a

F: drive, which is a volume of 5 TB on the SAN. This disc has an action

This is useful to our main file server.

I wonder if I create a computer virtual on ESXi server, can I attach this same

Volume 5 to for this virtual machine in the same way I have such that it is connected to the physical

box (if the virtual machine will have the same drive F:, which is actually the 5 TB

LUN on the SAN)? This new virtual machine would replace the old physical box, if

they would not both connected at the same time, in case that

questions. I know it of just the 2 TB limit, but is it just for

data warehouses? Which means, I have no need of virtual on files

This volume, they will be on local storage, I want just the virtual machine itself

have this volume mounted as a drive inside the BONE, so it acts as a

file server (I hope I explained this right). Is this possible, or

always do in the 2 TB limit in this case?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Josh

The 2 TB limit reference itself VMFS partitions.  What you want to do is possible and the road ahead

  • ESXi 4.0 - attached an iSCSI Lun and you want to import a VM to...

OK, I have attached an iSCSI LUN that has a couple of VM on it from a previous generation test. Now, I want to import those virtual machines to my ESXi 4.0 host. Can someone give me step by step on this operation method?

You'll just want to browse the data store, right-click on the VMX files and select Add to the inventory.   After you have added, you will want to check the network label to ensure that it exists on the new server.  If one of the virtual machines have been using VMdirectpath, generic SCSI devices, etc. you'll want to update those as well.

    Hi guys

I have to put in place a new file server 2012 which will be about 1 TB local storage and about 5 TB of storage which will be connected via iscsi, my question is will be a normal server standard edition 2012 with the role of server file you added the best solution or I have to look the edition of standard windows 2012 storage?

Great, much appreciate if someone could clarify which of these options would be best?

  • Attach an iSCSI lun to 5.1 and 5.5 to move virtual machines

I have 1 Server esxi 5.1 I've built a bunch of VM now connected to a 4 TB iSCSI LUN.

    I gave recently 2 new 5.5 servers.

Ideally, I would like to connect these 2 servers to the same lun iSCSI is used by the Server 5.1. Then, stop/forget each VM on 5.1, browse the data store on 5.5, add to the inventory and it start up. After all the machines are moved, I can do some changes on the material on the Server 5.1, it blow and install 5.5.

I plead for the trouble, or is a reasonable way to do?

There are more steps involved, after performing the operations on the Celerra.

  • For VM file server backup plan

    Hello!

I've recently implemented my virtual world with hosts 3 hp g7 and two p2000 msa storage.

I'm moving my physical machines to virtual infrastructure (in fact I moved many of them)

I think it is now time to plan a backup strategy

I have about 15 servers (desktop, Terminal servers, servers for files, e-mail server, two domain controllers, and...)

I also have an hp tape autoloader which is not yet operational

for the storage of backups, I have about 6 hp 600 GB sff sas disks

and the total size of virtual machines is about 2.5 to

What backup and network strategy that you suggest?

Some people say they use VDR and some say go to backupexec

and one important thing is my file server (two), which hosts over 1 million office and CAD and... files (their size is about 1 to 10 MB)

and the information is very important

What do you suggest me in this regard?

should I back up these files separately from the virtual machines (for example using normal windows backup) or it is better to save the entire vm?

I have to say that many times we need some specific file backup (some DOC or Excel for example) so the backup should be able to quickly extract to give me these files.

Thank you very much and sorry if my question is General somehow.

any suspicion or guide lines can help me a lot

    Thank you very much

    2 options.

    Assuming the following.

    Server A

OS VM stored on SAN DISKS

Backup OS VM stored on ESXi host as data store local DISK

Backup device VM stored in the Local data store

Backup storage of data 1 of SAN 1 on other materials (iSCSI or NFS)

All disks should use RAID levels other than RAID 0.  RAID 0 would be a disaster. Any disk could fail and put everything down.

Best gear RAID 1, 10. More space RAID 5

Openfiler iscsi or NFS supports and works well as a storage target for backup VM aware applications.

If you have not used linux so openfiler would be a good start, Web interface and install as an application.

for the best performance with NFS linux requires more effort.

Copy of tape using openfiler can be a challenge. I did not use backup to tape over the years.

Configuration of the network and all the hardware to support Gigabit connections and frames. You can also configure the network connections dedicated backup server openfiler appliance. If multiple NETWORK cards would be useful.

  • Stream access to the ISCSI LUNs on esxi v4

    Greetings,

Wonder just anyone could throw me some lights on it?

Esxi v4 does support stream access to a single lun? The reason behind this is I want to consolidate LUN based on roles (exch, file, etc.), that is to say, a lun (datastore) will host all the servers exch only running on different hosts.

    Thanks in advane.

    Hello

Yes No... multi host access to iscsi LUNs is possible... that's what san / storage isa he's shared on the subject. Just make sure that Suur iscsi luun u plan on using is in the list compatibilityy supported so that u get the support of vmware in the future if you need. ESX / ESXi have a clustered file system.

  • How to use a larger than 2 TB iSCSI LUN?

I have a server ESXi (4.1 U1) connected to an iSCSI NAS network, where 4 LUNS have been defined and presented to this host. all LUNS are 3 TB in size. ESXi correctly sees the LUNS and recognizes their size 3 to.

I know that the maximum size for a VMFS data store is 2 TB, so creating a single data store for each logic unit number would be a waste of space. I know also that the creation of multiple data on a single LUN warehouses is not recommended, and it does not seem work either: If there is already a data store on a LUN, the just vSphere Client won't let me create something else here, it is not even list it in the list of available devices for the creation of data warehouses.

I know that I can use extensions to create a store of data from more than 2 TB, but it seems to work across multiple LUNS: when I try to increase the size of a data store using the same logic unit number where he resides, ESXi is trying to increase it in fact, it won't go above 2 TB in size.

My question is: is it possible to combine two extensions in the same logical unit number, so actually creating a composed of 2 extensions 1.5 TB 3 TB data store?

If this is not possible, is it possible to create two data warehouses in the same iSCSI LUN? I know that this is not recommended, but it should at least be possilbe... but looks like it's not.

If this is not possible, then... How to make use of these 3 to LUN?

You can carve up the LUN and then it recombine.

How to use these LUNS 3 TB is to get rid of them and the re - present as< 2tb="">

  • File server virtualization (5 TB)

Hi all. Need your suggestions kindly again. This is our file server virtualization.

    SE Win2003, C: 60 GB (local RAID, OS), D: 1 TB (600 GB used, EMC CX3-40), E: 5 TB (used 0, EMC CX4-240)

We are working on ESX 4.0

    I wonder about:

    1. it seems that P2V will take several hours. Can I virtualize system C drive and "join" drive D/E (they are meta LUN) of the virtual machine without loose data?

2 and if I can, it will change the way in which my work of cluser ESX?

2 ESX is supported by a larger than 5 TB virtual disk?

Any suggestion and discussion will be appreciated!

Yes, you can create directly connect as meta lun via Raw Disk Mapping (RDM) however the maximum size of the LUN is only 2 TB. The only way to do is to create multiple VMDK and stripped then upwards to the level of the BONE as a 5 to.

Please note that you will need to format the VMFS with the maximum block size to enjoy 2 TB VMDK. Size Max if VMFS is 2 TB - 512 KB. So, it is not suggested to strip your VMFS but have VMDK in VMFS and strip only at the level of the BONE. messy, but one of the few ways to do it.

  • File server data - of RDM Volumes or VMFS?

    People,

I use vSphere Enterprise Plus 4.1.

I read on the RDM debate VMFS v. However, it seems that the arguments for VMFS assumes that you plan to run the operating system of the volume. In this case VMFS WINS.

I put aside for a couple of my operating system already VMFS volume. But one of the virtual machine will be a file server. I intend to add 7 x 500 GB of LUNS to this virtual machine. I don't plan to do snapshots of these volumes.

It seems that there is not much to skew the argument one way or another for each type of storage. In the absence of any compelling reason, I'm slightly siding with the RDM. It will give me more flexibility in storage 'pivot' if ever I need to upgrade and I won't get the red exclamation mark appearing in vCenter as I would fill my VMFS volume with a virtual disk file.

Can I ask for some advice on what would be a 'best practices' to add volumes that will be used to store the data?

    Kind regards

    Michael

From a management perspective I'd go for RDM, especially if she wants to be a file server.

Let's look at a few arguments. If you go for VMFS, this means that all I/o to the file server would be shared with the rest of the virtual machines residing on the data store (which, depending on your configuration might be ok). RDM also offer the advantage of being able to migrate to physics at some point, if the workload increases beyond the point where it makes sense to have a virtual machine.

Also, I wouldn't go all way on RDM, just for the volumes of data. So the OS goes on VMFS throughout the rest of the ROW. Do not think to much about performance, like lately the differences between VMFS and RDM are negligible.

  • Retrieve iscsi LUNs

    Hello

I have an iSCSI LUNS presented via OpenFiler to host ESXi 4 (standalone).  For some reason, the host has lost connectivity to the LUN and, of course, the virtual machines that were running.

I reboot the host which did not help.  I can see the device THAT LUN is presented with success under the section of storage card from the vSphere client.  When I run through the Add Wizard storage, in the storage section, the disk is visible.  However in the next step of the wizard it ends by crashes with an error message "unable to get disk partition information.

I don't want to just reset the partition table, and re-create the file system I want to retrieve the LUN and virtual computers that it contains.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

    Richard

Did you find anything in the newspapers of the OpenFiler? You have more than three LUNS on the OpenFiler? If so, this logic unit number could be a different LUN then what you think it is? Is there a chance that there is a windows or Linux machine that could have this locked LUN? Or you configured permissions so that those LUNS is available for this single ESXi host? The ESXi host for some reason any seems to think that this LUN does not contain a VMFS partition. The OpenFiler there snapshots of this LUN?

If the ESXi host can see the LUN, I'd start looking for storage and see if you can find configuration problems there.
