ESXi5 + iSCSI NAS with MPIO, fairly reliable for file server?

I look at the different options to learn where to run a file server. The most logical choice would be to run a Windows Server 2008R2 in an ESX host using the esx storage, however the esx use accesed by iSCSI NAS storage. I'm worried about losing files due to corruption of either the VMFS or VM-file, this could happen with any type of storage, but the fact that the system of whole files be stored in a single VMdisk care.

I have a few other options, such as:

(1) host the files directly on the NAS Server (it is supported)

(2) set up a number of logic of the NAS unit directly in the comments of Windows Server (avoiding the use of a VM disk)

The approach let ESXi dealing with iSCSI would be more integrated, but I will be more at risk? If something happens to the VMdisk I would lose all the files it contains, it is probably something (power loss, iscsi network failure?), are there any tools to recover a corrupted vmdisk?

Thank you

You'll be fine using an iSCSI LUN in ESX.  Your NAS device should be the biggest concern (if you lose the storage, you would lose any protocol any way).  Just make sure that it is a business device.  You could also potentially use NFS from your NAS device (if supported).  As with any environment, make sure that you back up!  You will not be at risk using iSCSI as an RDM.

  • syntax to enable AUTOMATIC backup for file server settings

According to the document of the oracle's RMAN can be configured to automatically back up the control file and the server settings file every time that metadata from database structure in control of changes in the file and each time a backup folder is added. Automatic backup RMAN can recover data even if the current control file and catalog file server settings are lost. »

I found the instruction for the control file, like:

but, what is the syntax to enable AUTOMATIC backup for file server settings?

automatic backup will take place of the control file and SPFILE. also whenever you have a backup statement in your RMAN script (e.g. database backup more archive), an automatic backup will be generated.

To activate the automatic backup of control file:

    rman> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;

  • vmxnet3 adapter on windows server 2012 with problem of bottleneck for MSSQL Server

    Hello!

We have a server windows 2012 R2 with MSSQL server 2014.

The client software uses the jdbc for database connection. If customers make a query which collects a massive amount of data the whole thing slowed down after a while.

Then, his need to wait 10-20 minutes to speed up again. I have tested and tried everything.

    -measure the ethernet parameters

    -replace the cables by cat7

-installed a virtual machine with the windows client and the real customer use the virtual environment via rdp

-activated the RSS in the vmxnet3 advanced settings and windows

-the mode SplitRx in vcenter vm settings and disabled ethernet Coalescent too

-set the VM to high latency

-tried to migrate the virtual machine to another host

Not for their help. If a massive sql query is run first its great, then the need for a second or more to check a single record.

checked the vm cpu stress but its less than 5% all the time. Checked the network with wireshark, there are a lot of small packets but nothing big. The bandwidth used is still low.

When its idle delay after two packets will increase from a few ms to 400-500 ms.

Our most powerful server is an HP DL380 G9 with two octa core Xeon processor 384 GB of ram, full SSD datastore. Its a lightning fast host.

The virtual machine have 8 core cpu and 64 GB of ram.

No matter where am I up the virtual machine or how many resources provide the custom aisle question.

The strange thing is when customers slowed down I can copy large files between the client and the server with fast speed, so the slow sql.

I can solved this question if I use the ethernet E1000 instead of the VMXNET3 adapter, but E1000 have much more load and the server need to transfer big files too, not only the sql service.

Vmxnet3 much faster and have less overhead, but this question of sql, I have a problem with that. So I go back to the E1000 for now. Its slower eat more cpu but the sql connections works very well without any problems.

Can someone tell me what I can try harder to identify the vmxnet3 problem? I really need it to improve network performance and lower overhead, but the rapid sql is the top priority.

    Thank you!!!

We had exactly the same problem on our SQL servers once upgraded to Vsphere6.This is due to Receive Segment coalescence feature in new VMXNET3-nics on Win 2012.

    More details here: http://nickmarshall.com.au/blog/2015/7/24/vsphere-6-hardware-version-11

The best way to solve this problem is to turn it off completely in the server operating system (in the admin command prompt):

netsh int tcp set global rsc = disabled

    Check with:

    netsh int tcp show global

It's fast and easy without downtime or disruptions and involves no change types of nic.

After doing this on all our SQL and application servers, everything was ok.

  • ESXi5: File server: 8TB iSCSI LUN

I'll put up an ESXi5 and plan to host my server files on it. The file server uses storing a Raid6 NAS available on iSCSI (with MPIO).

The server storage is about 8 TB, which will be shared via a Windows 2008R2 Guest VM.

Now I need to find the best options to expose the storage for Windows.

    Looks like my options are:

-Use VMFS on iSCSI and vmdk files ordinary LUN.

-Use RDM (do not know if it works with iSCSI) and provide a RAW disk to the vm file server.

-Use of iSCSI directly from the Windows VM (can cause a high CPU utilization), prove less effective.

The most common and options of would apply we would be the first option, however I would be worried to have my WHOLE being in a single VMDK file file server (or several)? If it gets corrupted, I would I lose its content business? Is this something that happens? Especially since this is managed ethernet (iSCSI)?

Really this all come down to: vmdk is safe, and is there a way to get it back where the vmdk file is corrupt (in the same case).

    Additional info:

I didn't need the partition of data to be snapshoted if I snapshot files server.

    Thank you!

I mounted the iscsi Target inside the bone of the VM. Works very well. I also have a secondary backup iscsi NAS for increased security outside (even RAID 6 is not flawless) and I do weekly backups of my virtual machines to a different data store. Storage of the user in a vmdk files is a bad choice. If all this is corrupt (or just the OS) you will have a hard time to retrieve data from a VMFS partition. There are very few options to read under Windows or Linux. Better safe than sorry

  • ISCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0

I feel iSCSI performance with HP DL160 G6 and ESX 4.0 servers and would like to help with this.

I have Setup iSCSI on 3 * ESX 4.0 host.

Each have a corresponding single target and a single LUN on the SAN. The LUNS are formatted as fmfs3 types.

Each host is connected to the QNAP San in the same way via a Gigabit switch.

All NICs operate at 1 GB.

To test the performance I use vmkfstools to clone a drive from the local store to the LUN

On the first host (a DL140 G3) performance is good to 48 MB/s.

On the 2 DL160 performance is very poor and barely reach 2 Mbps

During cloning, DL160 servers save also on several occasions by the following in/var/log/wmkwarning:
