EtherChannel in ESX 4 issue.

We have configured our with Etherchannels Cisco 4948 switches, and then I can't ping my host vSphere virtual machine... Any suggestions?

Our config

S3 (config) #int port-channel 1

S3(Config-if) #description for network cards

S3(Config-if) #int gi0/23

S3(Config-if) mode #channel-group 1 on

S3(Config-if) #int gi0/24

S3(Config-if) mode #channel-group 1 on

Which mode you have the vSwitch under the tab grouping of NIC load balancing?

Another ESX must sign in with the same ip address of the iscsi target and even target iqn. then discover iscsi and rescan datastore have see the name of name identical to that found on ESX first data store.

(Note for second ESX is not block format size but rescan HBAS/VMSF found eponymous store data like first ESX)

Like I said before, vMotion can saturate an uplink, so you will need to keep an eye on it. If you want to perform vMotion on the same vSwitch anyway, I suggest you create a group of separate ports with private IP (e.g. 192.168.x.y) addresses for her and let the two active vmnic for this group of ports allow failover in the event of an uplink failure.

  • Switch Standard virtual Teaming and Failover/Failback w / button batteries

    Hello

Small question about Standard virtual switches and nic teaming/failover.

I have 4 phy cards network connected to a single vSS; two are defined as active adapters (vnic A & B) and two are defined as standby adpaters (vnic C & D). The first two active adapters are connected to a primary switch stack using an etherchannel cross-stack and the two other standby adapters are connected to a driving switch stand-by also using a cross-stack etherchannel. The primary and standby switch stacks are not connected to each other (in a stacking context) but are connected to the same physical network.

Here's my question - if A nic fails, nic C or D will become active. Let's just for arguments sake adapeter C become active. So B and C card are now involved (for vmware). When C becomes active, the network see B and C adapter as a team even if they are spanning two batteries of different switch - this will create duplicate the network MACs? If Yes, what is the proper way to shift several cross-stack etherchannel teams?

The physical switch batteries are Cisco Catalyst 3750 s.

    Thank you!

    Steve

... why bother you even create etherchannels...

There may be special use cases where you have a high traffic going out to a lot of targets with different IP addresses. Personally I never used EtherChannel in ESX (i) environment to date.

With the default strategy, VMware uses a turnstile mechanism, where virtual NETWORK card a VM is assigned to a physical connection when the virtual machine is running. It is usually sufficient to balance traffic. ESXi 4.1 and the appropriate license (required vDS), VMware has introduced a new policy of load after grouping , which can also interesting to look at.

And, when using an etherchannel, why is-IP-HASH the technique only balancing?

  • Update of the modules for security issues ESX service console

Today, I was asked a question on the vervsion of OpenSSH used on the service console for our environment vSphere 4.0. Apparently, there is a vulnerability in OpenSSH 5.6/7 with a certificate which has been corrected in version 5.8. My response to the security team has been we are the 4.3.p2 and as a result, this issue does not concern us. So the following questions then becomes why you are not in the latest version?

I'm curious to know if someone has already discussed with VMware on these types of security issues where the components used by RHEL, like OpenSSH, are vulnerable. What was their response to attempts to update this kind of things? I guess some of the answers would not be supported, you'll break, if you patch it's no guarantee your fix will not get downgraded, etc..

I'm looking for is a solid answer that explains why we do not have that kind of stuff to ESX, only when VMware provides the fix. I could contact the support, but I thought her first check and see what others have met.

    Thank you

    Hello.

I think that all the reasons you mentioned (not supported, you're going to break, if you patch it's no guarantee your fix will not get downgraded, etc.) are pretty much true.  The ESX 4.1 Patch Management Guide stated in the FAQ section:

When a rpm on my ESX host has an equivalent Linux, can I use the Linux RPM to upgrade my system?
N ° VMware recommends that you update your host ESX 4.1 with RPM provided by VMware.

An answer I could use would be to take a step back to look at the bigger picture.  Is a SSH, which should be secluded/protected to some extent in a first time, have a vulnerability more risky than having an ESX host unstable/not supported with X number of VMS running on it.

    Good luck!

    I appreciate your help.

Thank you and have a nice day

    Hi Sarah,.

A portchannel can be a layer 2 portchannel or a portchannel layer-3 and not a combination of both.  In your config file switch is just a purchase order on the router layer 3 and Layer 2.

Then, given that you are connected to a router, I guess you want a purchase order later-3.  In this case under the po interface add an IP address on the same segment as the side of the router.

    Hello

If you want to upgrade your vCenter to 5.0 and you want the host ESX 4.0 current environment then you need yo upgrade your ESX 4.0 update 2 host.

You can update your host ESX ESXi 4.1 4.0 or ESXi5.0.

  • Objective 7.1 - guarantee the issue of ESX/ESXi hosts

    Hey all,.

I am currently working on my study guide for the DCA review and have fallen somewhat with the ESX/ESxi Secure objective 7.1 hosts and more specifically the section for "Customize SSH Seetings for increased security. The only documentation I could find about it is in the "ESX Configuration Guide" on page 202 and the VMware KB 1017910. In ESX config guide details how to REDUCE the requirements of security on default (allowing root access, change the version of the SSH protocol, etc.), and the article explains how to set a timeout for the technical support of Mode (both local and remote). I guess these aren't the types of answers they seek, as the section is to increase the level of security.

Any clarification or possilbe advice that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA,

  • Storage vMotion issue License - license of moving between ESX Hosts 4.1?

I have a question about Storage vMotion with ESX 4.1 license.

One of my environments ESX 3.5 existing consists of 10 ESX 3.5 hosts - 8 ESX 3.5 servers Standard and 2 ESX 3.5 Enterprise servers.  I use a centralized license server (I think that's the correct term).

I found that I can "move" the vMotion (and vMotion) Storage capacity of two of my 10 servers that only two of them are enabled for vMotion, both.  I do this by topic under VI Client-> select the host ESX-> Configuration-> network-> properties-> VMkernel-> Edit-> toggle the box "VMotion" activated-> OK.   I guess that by doing this, that I'm actually just spend my licenses 'ESX Enterprise' between the hosts.

Be able to run Storage vMotion on one or two guests at a time is a lot for a few times a year I need to reconfigure my back-end storage.

    Two Questions:

    1. this use is technically legal in a perspective of VMware licenses?

    2. now, I'm looking to upgrade to ESX 4.1 and wonder if I'll be able to keep doing this?  I have read that ESX 4.x got rid of the centralized server license model, so not sure if I could 'move' licenses around like that... In fact since vMotion is now included in Standard Edition, I guess I could 'pull out' through a license only one ESX Enterprise server in order to obtain the license of storage vMotion.

I let my support/subscription lapse for as long it is cheaper to purchase new licenses rather than paying for support costs with retroactive effect on my existing licenses.   The price difference between Standard and Enterprise is large (3 times the cost) that I don't think I can swing is business licenses for all of my guests past the bean counters, where the reason for this post.

    Reflections and comments?

Each host has a license key number. You can apply a new license key to a host, and it is immediately activated. I guess you would be technically violate licensing for seconds as a license number was recorded at two hosts. There is a place in the vSphere client to "assign a new license key to this host. When a license key has been assigned, it remains as a choice, then you can simply choose the functionality licensed one and below the other.

  • Issue between Cisco and ESX switch

It is a small deployment with an ESX Server running a Windows Small Business SERVER 2003.

ESX server has 2 network cards, previously a NIC was connected to a small FastEthernet Switch netgear and all workstations have been working on it.

I replaced the netgear with a Cisco WS-C2960S-24TS-S and the field still works fine, the problem is that I can't connect to the service console or the VI client from a computer connected to the switch.

I can't ping the IP switch ESX service console and also can not ping the switch since the service console.

Switch and ESX console can ping the Windows Virtual Machine and the virtual machine can ping both of them. Therefore, I can get to the VI client via Wirtual Machine (not the best scenario to manage one of its right VMS ESX host?)

I don't know what the problem is, but it sounds a lot there is a problem with the configuration of port / vlan on the cisco switch.

Can a Cisco expert help out me here?

Here are some details of the configuration.

Port group service Console and the port Vm group do not use no matter what config VLAN on the ESX Server.

I think I've seen this before. I'm not super familiar with this switch, but I think that the problem is with cisco-computer office macro.

Try using the macro switch cisco instead since you are addressing a vSwitch on the other end. You can always check the mac address table and see if your Mac to the vswif (service console) make their appearance. If they are not then appear this is an inconsistency in the port between the Cisco Switch and vSwitch.

They are directed to 192.168.10.51 - 192.168.10.53 to what will be the cluster 1 and 192.168.10.61 - 192.168.10.63 for cluster 2 (all with 24 bit masks). Yet for some reason I can't connect to or ping them from either a laptop computer sitting across the physical interface (with IP in the same range) or "Cedar" VM.

If it has no effect then my controller of domain and DNS is through 192.168.10.40 (the virtual machine of Cedar)

IM using the E1000 type vmnic and my physical interface is an Intel PRO1000 GT, which is listed on the HCL.

    Out of order:

    All ideas

    See you soon

Have you enabled on vSwitch0 promiscuous mode?

  • ESX 3.5u4 and SRM1.0u4 of MirrorViewSRA SRA issue

    Hello

I get the following error message when you configure the table view manager in MRS. 1.0 Patch 4 (component versions at the end)

    Configure table in SRM management:

    Error occurred

VMware-dr - 2.log (when run from SRM Array Manager)

(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E) [|#1] End MirrorViewSRACLI

MirrorView Insight for VMware (returned in the interface of the tool)

I did a reboot of the server after both 4 SRM of Patch 1.0 has been installed, AND after that the SRA EMC has been installed.

In addition, if I try to manually register the MirrorViewSRACore.dll, I get an error: failure of LoadLibrary("MirrorViewSRACore.dll) - the specified module could not be found, however, if I manually register any of the other DLLs (i.e. MirrorViewSRALogger.dll), I get a successful result

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hello

In simple terms without Solutions Enabler, which is used to drive the SRA interaction with the CLARiiON CLARiiON will not work

If please download and install and let us know how it goes

    Thank you very much
