Everything opens as a program? Even the icons are switched to it?

Okay, so I tried to download something, but he said he could not open unless I gave her a program to open it with. It turned out that everything now opens with windows media, because that's what I clicked. Even the icons are switched to windows media. I tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505 but towards the end when I type in the reg import thing it tells me "error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error. No, I have not either a disc on my computer, I run a windows 7 too. Please help ASAP

I've seen this happen when opening a program via a shortcut (for example. LNK file), you are asked what type of program to open it with. After selecting the Windows Media Player (or another program) via the Select a program from a list of programs installedand check always use the selected program to open this type of file (circled in red below), the document or program referenced by the shortcut of origin opens in Windows Media Player as it should.

The problem is that now all shortcuts (for example. LNK files) on the desktop or in the Explorer will want to be opened by Windows Media Player and use the icon of Windows Media Player to display the shortcut bit whatever the shortcut was originally intentioned to open. This is known as a file association and the default icon. The same condition can occur if you have performed these actions 'Open with' on one. JPG or even a. EXE, but the. LNK explanation is much more likely for the items on the desktop; especially if all the icons have changed as well.

The good news is that a small free utility was written to cancel the. LNK file association was created. There is also a registry hack to achieve, but I recommend the utility unAssoc for its ease of use. I used to send people on another site to download this utility, but this site has become confused with all the ads and fake download links. I put a copy on my own OneDrive here.

Just download, then use the utility to unassociate the. LNK files for the user or globally delete the file type and let windows rebuild a new default.

  • During the installation of programs: the icons are for a certain program, no new icons. How to fix?

    Hello.

Having a problem with icons. When I install some programs: the icons are always for a certain program. They are the same, it's for a photo program called ulead Photo Explorer 8.0 IS based.

Usually the icons will become the icons right when I turned on my computer several times and when I opened the program a few times. I don't sit and do it, I use my computer and it seems that windows recognizes finally that is supposed to happen.

Probably not malware, I' scanned v. It seems to be a glitch somewhere, and some things are not recognized immediately as they are supposed to.

I can post a page if you wish.

I found the problem, I think. Because it seems that this problem of icon has stopped.

In the photo program I've mentioned above, Photo Explorer 8.0 IS based, it has a photo viewer. In the photo viewer, you can associate files that it opens. For some reason, the WMF (Windows Meta file) can be verified. I probably left to itself, or all selected and have not read enough in the descriptions - then I left the only settings.

Just display for the debate and let someone know a possible solution to the problems in the future.

    Hello

The Hiberfil.sys hidden system file is located in the folder root of the drive where the operating system is installed. The Windows Kernel Power Manager reserves this file when you install Windows. The size of this file is approximately equal to the amount of memory (RAM) is installed on the computer.

    Hello

You did changes to the computer before the show?

    Method 1
    Step 1:
I suggest you to check if the problem persists in safe mode.

Start your computer in safe mode

    Step 2:
I suggest you perform the clean boot and check if the problem persists.

Note: Follow step 7 clean boot KB929135 article to reset the computer in normal mode.

    Method 2
Also, the issue could be due to the virus on the computer. I suggest you run virus scanner online by using the Microsoft safety scanner.

OK completely reboot Windows 7. When he started to look in the Task Manager under process for photoshop.exe it shouldn't be there. If it is highlighted and press the button end process. Now right-click the Photoshop icon and select run as administrator. Photoshop starts, you should see photoshop.exe in the list of running processes. When you close Photoshop it should disappear from the list.

  • The icons are blurred when size large.

Recently, I've migrated to W7 from XP and the difference is everything to do huh... shock... Out of the box, it takes a little tinkering before it becomes bearable. One of the settings that I need is linked to icons.

When the icons are huge (although probably 'normal size' for other people) they look washed out; not crispy. But when they are small, they look like if they were designed by an Impressionist painter. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the Impressionist paintings... in a Museum of fine arts. But I need clarity on my computer (just a tool). Old W3.11 icons can appear very 'yucky' and 'old fashioned' and maybe not to everybodys taste, but at least they were clear.

For example: the 'Open folder' icon in a file Explorer resembles a yellow arrow pointing upwards and left disorder. (It took me a few days and another computer where the icons were huge to know that it was supposed to be a folder on the open side and sligtly). The icon of a zipped file is just a blur (a bit like an injection of ICT). A text file icon is just a white field with light grey edge that is barely visible or recognizable. Microsoft Office icons can be identified by their colors. But any other program that uses a fuzzy green icon could easily be confused with Excel...

    What I've done so far:
-Check the calibration of the screen color, contrast, and brightness of the screen. I used to work with images and not easily convinced, but increases the clarity of icons ruined space color photos, so it wasn't an option.
-Clean the screen. Not really necessary, given that I don't have a touch screen and use the mouse pointer to point to something on the screen and not a greasy finger.
    -Cleaned my glasses... No improvement.
-Also, I checked my sight, and even if I don't probably are not eligible as a fighter pilot is about right.

Then... Here's the question, and beware that on the computer on which I work: I don't have the admin rights.

-Can I exchange all the default icons (folders, files, text, files, programs, etc.) for crisp and clear icons?
-If Yes, how can I do that?

    Thank you

PS: Increasing the size of the icon is not an option... I.m.h.o. it's just a waste of valuable space!

    I have it!

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In order to have sharp crisp icons: the font to 100% settings you NEED
Adjustment of the police of the superior results of adjustment in Fuzzy icons. Checked!

If the fonts in the menus are too small, then go into the control panel-personalization-> choose the color of the window and start clicking on follow-up to the 'window color and appearance' me to adjust the fonts of all menus to your liking.

In numerous menu now fonts will increase... However: there are a lot of dialog boxes and places that will always show a smaller font size? For example: just press 'Start' in the lower left corner.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

In my - probably not if - humble opinion, Microsoft could do that much easier...
Just make the size of the icons regardless of the font size!
(And Yes, I program a bit myself and am aware that can screw things up (allocation of space, the alignment of the text and icons, etc.), but these can probably be repaired by one or two lines of code).

Given that I don't see anything menus native windows for me is kind of correct... I'll make that a test. Some heavier style modding is required to fix those windows errors, that may be feasible at home, but not at the office...

    Thanks for all the help!

Try to return to the English Canada and see if the desktop icons reappear.  If they do, when the default language has changed he assumed you have created a new 'profile' perhaps and you see profile this profile's empty office.  Alternatively, if a new profile has been created, open the old profile (person) when you open a session.
