Exchange on Vmware performance (CPU/RAM/IO)

Hello

I currently looking to migrate an exchange Server 2003 to a vmware.  So far, all of the items found were based on architecture using a SAN storage.

Our exchange server currently has about 250-300 mailboxes but lets say that the solution must support at least 500 mailboxes.  We do not expect to use a SAN or a type of external storage for now.

I want to know is if, in terms of performance and above all i/o, this solution is possible.   I found the article stating that it is y eraf without major differences in performance between a vmware and a physical server, but these comparisons are, as already said, always based on a vmware server using a San.  Y at - it an article or information about a solution using only the local disks of Vmware server?

Thank you

If you use a physical right now box without any performance problem, then your disk susbsystem is fast enough. There is a document of scaling to Micrososoft Exchange you can use to calculate your IOPS drive / s required. You can then create your susbsystem of disk based on that, assuming a SAS 15 k disk gives you 150IOPS. A 6 disks in RAID 5 will give you 600 IOPS / s, a disc set 2 in RAID-10 for newspapers will give you 150 IOPS / s.

VMware adds a small overhead in terms of disk IO (perhaps 5%)

  • How can I get the Guest VM CPU, Ram, disk of VMware Tools?

    Hey guys,.

I have a question for the information of the guest OS,

I can use the SDK to get information such as the disk i/o of vCenter,

But I can't the CPU, Ram, disk use on the comments operating system?

I know vmware tools can help, but I don't know how to use the web Service to obtain, please do me a favor!

    Thank you

To get the disk usage information in the guest operating system, you get "guest.disk" property of the managed object VirtualMachine. This will give you the total capacity and free space on each disk information.

    http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/VC-SDK/visdk41pubs/ApiReference/Vim.VM.GuestInfo.DISKINFO.html

For the processor and memory, you can extract the properties "summary.quickStats.overallCpuUsage" and "summary.quickStats.guestMemoryUsage" of the managed object VirtualMachine.

  • Vs CPU Ram graphic card upgrade for Mac pro performance?

Just after the crossroads to aboard the cloud to Adobe and seeks help on CPU Ram vs graphics card GPU.

    Material:

    • MAC Pro (early 2009) 4.1 2.26 Ghzdual core 8, 23 grams (5 x 4 g sticks and sticks of 3 x 1 G), 4 x 1 TB 7200 RPM int. HD (1 scratch drive), (no windows don't things here)
    • Graphics card Ge Force GT120 Machine has 64-bit capability, but normally starts in 32- bit due to old still used 32-bit apps.
    • Watch CS6 AE activity monitor uses all 16 son, works in 64 bitsand seizes about 10 Gig of ram to operate in.

    Software:

    • Running OS x 10.6.8. (Snow leopard) with all updates.
    • All major video applications: creative cloud (also have studio FCP 3 installed but just move to Adobe now on video works)

I really like this AE & body use all threads, made in the background (which results in NO crashes (so far)) because my old 120 GT video card apparently is more stifling that it worked in FX in FCP 7 & 4 Motion.

    1. Q - can someone point me in the direction of how Adobe got the device to use all the cores and threads and run it in 64-bit, but starts in 32 bit?

In terms of performance, (rendered in particular) I know I should go to the Apple/ATI 5870 graphics card, but as a veterinarian of fixed-income securities disabled, $450 is hard to find. I evaluated cards flashes, including those of macvidcards on ebay, but for used cards which are flashed, it gives me pause, especially when they are about the same price as the new price of 5870.

So I am struggling with trying to figure out that the best shot for the less $$$, where the issue of the title.

    1. Is it more effective for video FX works to add CPU ram or (gulp) to upgrade the video card to 5870 card?

Example: I can add sticks of 3 x 4 G in place and place existing 3 x 1 G sticks of ram for less than $200 CPU. A new 5870 card is $ 450 Apple. Approach that annoys me that most make speed plant put VFX work in AE CS6 or P Pro CS6?

Sorry, I'm more than a little fuzzy on this, but hoping a kind soul will lead the way.

For After Effects, more RAM is better. For Premiere Pro, an improved GPU is more important. In addition, you might consider spending money even on an SSD, which is beneficial for both (for caches).

  • VMware Performance event triggers use case issues.

    1) can event Performance adapter CPO VMware triggers and their

Attributes of the SAMPLE SIZE, INTERVAL and CONDITIONS be configured

    for the following use cases?

    (2) event VMWare Performance triggers may be CORRELATED?  and if so it would take to satisfy the use case?

    (3) an additional performance monitoring tool needed to satisy the use case? :

If a VM CPU or RAM was 80% for 2 hours then trigger a workflow

    and

If a VM CPU or RAM was 60% for X days and then trigger a workflow

First, I will describe how you can instrument a correlation method, but in the end, I'm not sure it's really necessary for use cases described.

To correlate the performance VMware on a designated period events, you would create a process correlation that follows the underlying the performance event and decides to trigger the process wished triggered when correlated event is detected or not.

    Here's how it works.

First, create a global table with three columns:

    (1) virtual path Machine

    (2) County of consecutive trigger

    (3) latest trip time

Create a process that is triggered by a performance event VMware (for example memory Avg > 80%) where you can set the size of the sample and an interval that is logical view of the period of interest (2 hours or X days). For example, a sample of 10 and 30 seconds (5 minutes) are a slice of reasonable time to vCenter for 2 hours. As a result, requiring 24 consecutive triggers to trigger the real event of interest. (divided by 5 minutes to 2 hours)

In other words, the formula is:

Sample size * interval / calendar = consecutive trigger Count

The correlation process triggered by the gross VMware event does the following:

    (1) if there is no existing entry in the overall table for the virtual machine, add the entry to table with count = 1 and current time

    (2) if the entry exists, check the current time against the last trigger time

    (a) if it is the next interval, for example, the time now is 12:15 and triggered last time was 12:10 (see note below).

Incrementing counter and trip together last time

If count = 24, then run the process that manages the "VM memory Avg > 80% for at least 2 hours' and remove the entry from the table.

    If count< 24,="" the="" process="" exits="" having="" only="" incremented="" the="" counter="" and="" set="" the="" last="" trigger="">

    (b) if the current time is > that last trigger time slice schedule (+ a little padding), set the counter to 1

    Note: When comparing the time of w/last time running, you should cover to consider delay light treatment in order to compare now< last-time+(time="" slice*2).="" anything="" less="" than="" 10="" minutes="" in="" this="" case="" would="" be="" considered="" a="" consecutive="" trigger.="" you="" could="" also="" compare="" current-time="">< last-time+time-slice+1,="" which="" is="" probably="" also="">

Now, after going through all that, you don't have to the process of correlation after all. Simply adjust your sample size to be large enough to accommodate your deadline and you launch your handler directly without having to correlate. So for the 2 hour window, simply create a sample size 240 (* 30 seconds = 2 hours). This may or may not work depending on how performance indicators have been set up on the server (sample size, intervals and how much is saved). You can define your own samples and multiples of these configured values intervals (so be careful and see VMware documentation when he resorts to such measures)

You can see that I have described everything first correlation method is more reliable, especially for longer periods such as X days (where you need to taste every hour instead of every 5 minutes).

In any case, I think you can do what's needed without external control, but will require experimentation and a deeper knowledge of the works of performance for ESX metric sampling.

I upgraded my card mother cpu ram and hard drive. I reinstalled windows xp home edition has got all of the updates. After 9 latest updates download and installtion was going well until I rebooted the computer and go to page window showing all the icons that I get a blue screen and the computer restarts its self and does not stop. How can this be corrected?

    Hi KevinRy,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

    Unplug all external devices.

Try to start in safe mode. If you can start in safe mode, and then do a system restore to restore the computer to an earlier point in time.

Change the recovery settings to disable automatic reboot, if you are able to boot up to the desktop computer:

    1.

Right-click my computerand then click Properties.

    2.

    Click the Advanced tab.

    3.

Under Startup and recovery, click settings to open the Startup and recovery dialog box.

    4.

Clear the automatically restart check box, and then click OK many times necessary.

    5.

Restart your computer so that the settings take effect.

Now, when you are going to close and a fatal error occurs, you will see at least and it won't cause an automatic restart.

Please reply back with the error message you get because it helps us to resolve the error.

    Kind regards

IM runing windows 7 now and try to install windows 8.1 but IE NX unsupported. So I decided to change my processor and the extra ram of 1 GB ad, and the new graphics card but I don't know that the graphics card & CPU (last) support my pc.
Here is my pc in detail.
1.80 ghz, 180 GB HARD drive and 1 GB of ram, motherboard AMIBOIS, Windows 7 running. So suggest
me that I buy a new pc or
change cpu, ram and graphics card.

    Hello

As it is an OEM machine, you will not be able to replace the CPU this processor is specifically compatible with OEM motherboard. If you are looking to change the CPU, RAM and GPU, you really can both do you a favor and buy a new machine all together, or build your own.

  • vSphere and folder ' / proc/vmware/vm / # / cpu/status ", process ID

    Hello

I used a few scripts on ESX 3.x to kill the process (Parent of the virtual machine process) VM. Now, we have updated the host to vSphere. Some of the Scripts use

    /proc/vmware/vm / # /cpu/status fodler

I think something is bud with vSphere because cpu/status does not already exist.

Is there a different way to discover Parent for a VM (VMID) process?

    Thanks for any help

    Nautilus

    Hey Nautilus,

Indeed, the process of the murder of VM is changed in vSphere.

    1. List of all running virtual machines to find the vmxCartelID of the virtual machine with the command:

      # / usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmdumper-l

    2. Scroll down the list until you see the name of your virtual machine. The output looks like:

      VMID = 5151
      PID = - 1
      cfgFile="/vmfs/volumes/4a16a48a-d807aa7e-e674-001e4ffc52e9/mdineeen_test/vm_test.vmx".
      UUID = "" 56 4 d db e2 0a e5 3rd-a9 a6 2B 31 4 b 69 29 15 19 ""
      displayName = "vm_test" vmxCartelID = #.

    3. Run the following command to stop the virtual machine with the vmxCartelID:

      # / usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmkload_app k 9 #.

    Enjoy

  • Exchange on vmware

Someone at - it experience with Exchange on vmware? Whats it like, what can you recommend or suggest that we plan to virtualize our messaging environment

I made environments to exchange 2003 and 2007 ESX3.0 production and 3.5 respectively (up to 1400 users per server).

Quite frankly, I find it works as well as if it were the physical iron - and it's much easier to administer in a VM cluster in a MSCS (ewwww) cluster.

The only thing you really lose on a MSCS is the failure of the monitoring service, but there is now capacity in vSphere for monitor applications etc - I know implementations doing this (I saw your other question about the update to vSphere).

I would...? Yes, I have already

I would for my own messaging system?... Yes, once again I have already

    Suggestions:

According to our material (which I see in your other question you have a few blades) I'd say limit to 2 x vCPU

If you have more than 1000 users it might be useful in spreading them on exchange servers two - this also gives you an another exchange server in your network to bring up a copy of LCR/SCR of the messaging database if a broken

Memory?... I saw him running for a few hundred users (< 250) about 2.5 Gb - but recommend you give what you can... 8Gb would certainly not be out of the paddling pool for users of 500-1000...

  • Workstation 8.0.2 CPU / RAM / pagefile settings

I'm just starting with vmware workstation 8.0.2 and so far so good.  This has been impressive in virtualization.  A couple of questions tho that I have not been able to find an answer online.

My host: (Dell T7500) Dual six core (12 cores) Xeon 2.8 ghz with VT support, 48GB of ram and several SAS 3 GB/s RAID disks configured and a smaller separate host drive.  Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

Range of VMs for Win XP 32 bit, Win 7 32 bit, Win SBS2000 Exchange SQL Svr, Win SBS2011 oracle running and some fresh Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit machines.

To get the most out of my hardware / performance.

    1. Should I have the BIOS for the VT virtualization support, correct?
    2. I have also hyper threading enabled in the BIOS Windows 24 hearts bishoprics.  What is the best way to use the processors?
    3. For Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit guest I am limited to the processor cores (2), no matter if I put the number of processor cores per processor for a total of 2 cores or numbers.  Is this correct?  It's the OS will support? Performance is the same regarless of the settings - correct?
    4. With 48 GB, I have made it all the virtual memory in ram host for true - correct?
    5. What is the size of swap file would be on win7 Ultimate 32 bit comments if I allocate 2 or 3 GB of physical RAM for the guest?  Is there a rule of thumb for size distribution and file of the RAM of the guests?
    6. Finally, I use Symantec Enpoint protection (12.1) on the host and the guests and said to the host computer to ignore the virtual file extenstions.

Everything seems to work fine, but I feel that I fell into it.  No indication on these parameters would be greatly appreciated.

To get the most out of my hardware / performance.

    1. Should I have the BIOS for the VT virtualization support, correct?

Yes. Otherwise, you can run the 64-bit clients.

    1. I have also hyper threading enabled in the BIOS Windows 24 hearts bishoprics.  What is the best way to use the processors?

Hyperthreading allows the Scheduler to OS comments a bit faster delegate processes to processors. The work itself is not faster, as the real number of CPUS is not increased, but it helps. So, Yes.

    1. With 48 GB, I have made it all the virtual memory in ram host for true - correct?

I don't know if you have done this. But you should as long as the amount of RAM you have given to all guests is available for VM Workstation RAM.

    1. What is the size of swap file would be on win7 Ultimate 32 bit comments if I allocate 2 or 3 GB of physical RAM for the guest?  Is there a rule of thumb for size distribution and file of the RAM of the guests?

I would leave that decision to the Windows guest OS.
