Extend the VMware environment

I'm expanding our vmware environment.  I currently have HA\DRS clusters comprising DL360\380 G5 servers.  I bought three DL380 G6 servers.  I'm the thing about creating another cluster for the G6 servers using VMware EVC vs. Someone has mixed the G5 and G6 servers on the same cluster?  Or is it better to keep them separated?

Thank you

> Has anyone mixed G5 and G6 servers on the same cluster?  Or is it better to keep them separated?

VCA depends on the processor not material, if processors are a match, it should be good... We mixed in some, it's only a problem if your servers are a different configuration, so G5 is 64 GB and G6 is 96 GB of RAM for example, then you could end up with an asymmetrical cluster.

IMHO if the machines are identical (except the new architecture) I would put it in the same cluster. You can always build the new cluster, as expected, disconnect, then remove the host G5 of the old cluster and ADD the new cluster G6 (after turning on VCA).  If she don't get complaint, it should be good

BTW, removing guests will NOT affect the virtual computer running (provided that you restart / power off of the host).

  • If all the domain controllers reside in the VMWare environment

I was curious to know if there is someone who can give their opinion about the location of the domain controllers in the VMWare community.  I had 2 DCs before the introduction of VMWare and pulling on servers inside.  I created 2 new controllers domain in VMWare and then retrograde 2 those outside so that only there are only virtual domain controllers.  It seemed to work very well, but I had to turn off equipment running VMWare, and when it started, the storage device that the accessible ESX host has launched a mistake because he could not find a domain controller.

Most people remove all external domain controllers and go with only VMWare virtual DCs, or is it better to always keep an external domain controller upwards and running?  Any advice is welcome.

    Thank you.

I always advise to keep the domain controller hosting your virtual environment PDC emulator FSMO role. Time is critical on most of the servers, but especially on the PDC that is the top of your Windows Time synch infrastructure.

We also keep a ms in each data center on a physical platform, this way if we already have a power down when we turn we can raise the physical DC first and very quickly.

    I hope this helps.

  • Do capacity planning on an existing vmware environment

In the first phase of virtualization made us build 1000 VM on 120 esx host.

So we produced vm mass until 2008.

Now we found the overall architecture X 86, (CF) storage, (1 gigabit) network is very old.

We believe that we have many pieces of equipment and it is difficult to monitor and that the performance (disk quick access is not very good)

We thought about to use Scheduler capability to analyze it is VMware infrastructure, to know what we really need for an environment VM 1000.

But we do not know if the capacity planner has been designed to analyze the vmware environment it self, because it was only used to analyze the physical environment.

    I only know platespin.

    Lanamark (?).

    Free 5nine Planner (?)

    Are there other (free) market

Vmware capacity planner would be better it self.

I've done many evaluations of virtualization using Capacity Planner. Many of them were in organizations that have been partially virtualized, so the analysis includes both physical and virtual servers.

Capacity Planner will identify the virtual servers and mark them so they can be recognized in your inventory.  This is true of virtual machines running on ESX or Hyper-V. I don't have a problem using capacity planner to size a physical infrastructure refresh, and I am sure it would work in your scenario as well.

  • Screening for the Virus VMware environment?

    Hello fellow VMware users.

I decided to set up an environment of virtual-screening machine of the virus.

I wanted to ask if anyone had

knowledge on how to prevent the host - interaction of the virtual machine. I'm going to

most likely use a network bridge connection to my own computer and I

you want to secure any possibility that a virus can infiltrate my host

computer (such as a worm or something) or the network on which I am running (there are other computers in the same network in my house), if there is no chance

This could happen. I'm just wanting to know if there is something that

I can do to ensure the security of my computer (s) before going to follow and put

    This crazy idea?

    Thanks in advance.

Other info: don't know if this is important: running an XP Home Edition SP3 - processor Pentium 4-3, 00 GHz - 1 GB RAM

Under VMware Workstation version 6.5.3 of XP Home Edition

I would try using NAT, which essentially lets you share the IP address of the workstation host and you can communicate with other systems and the Internet.  I have no advice for you on 'subjects' If you are referring to where you are going to get viruses for the test. The only one I know of we is the well-known Eicar test virus.  You can find it here: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm.

I still think that the safest way to do this is to disable the NIC in total.  You can always transfer files to the virtual machine via shared folders option in the VMware tools and ensure the safety of your host system.  You can transfer new definitions of virus, infected files, and ensure the safety of your host system while having your completely isolated test bench.

If you end up using this to create a new virus and causing pain for IT administrators around the world, do me a favor and forget I gave him advice.

  • panic the kernel Linux (CentOS 5.3) VMWare environment only

I have I try to install CentOS 5.3 in VMWare Server 2.x. The host system running Windows 2000 SP4 with a CPU AMD Athelon XP 1800, 1 G of RAM, and an NVidia FX5200. Whenever I try to install CentOS 5.3 the result is always the same, a panic of the kernel/kernel oops. I have other virtual machines running in the same material without problem, but these virtual machines are running FC4 and earlier versions of RedHat.

Like many I can diagnose the problem isn't seams to be associated CentOS. I believe that this is true because I tried to install CentOS 5.3 directly in the host system, and I can reach the stage where partitions are created, step I can't achieve when trying to install CentOS 5.3 in my virtual machine in VMWare Server 2.0.

I tried to increase the RAM memory used by the guest operating system, but the problem persists. I tried to disable acpi (setting the acpi = no as a startup option), made the installation using the text mode, but the same problem, the kernel panic.

According to the kernel panic information on diagnosing the problem happens in the xor_sse_2 function.

The call trace shows the following:

    -

    apic_timer_interrupt

    xor_sse_2

    do_xor_speed

    calibrate_xor_block

    sys_init_module

    syscall_call

    Code: Value of Bad EIP

    -

I upploaded kernel panic message, as it was printed in the VMWare Console.

I tried to disable all sorts of acceleration in the VM configuration, changed the virtual BusLogic at LSI SCSI controller type, but the same question. I looked for the functions in the call trace service, it seems that calibrate_xor_block is used inside the md driver/module, so it must be a problem with the virtual hardware (disk, CD-ROM, etc.). I changed the virtual CDrom material from IDE to SCSI and now the guest what OS can't find the CD-ROM drive, or the hard drive, but there is also no kernel panic! Y at - it a LSI driver disk that can be used for the virtual SCSI cdrom and the hard drive is accessible?

    Does anyone has any suspicion?

    Thank you

  • How the PATH environment variable longer?

    Hello

I use Windows Vista Business.  Lately, I just installed the beta of Intel Parallel Studio and found that my path variable ran out of space.  Internet research concluded that there cannot be more than 1024?
It is too little for me to welcome all directories program that I installed, and thus some programs no longer work correctly.
    I wonder if there-
    (a) is a way I can expand the size of the Path system variable?
    (b) add another variable which can take some Path variable values so that I do not violate the limitation of 1024.
    Thanks in advance!
    A

    Hello, Gutsingh

The PATH environment variable has a fixed limit of 1023 characters can be used. It doesn't seem to be a way to extend this. Other environment variables have a higher limit, which can be useful.

  • FQDNs for ESX environment when DNS servers are VMS within the ESX environment

    Hello

    I was wondering,

When the implementation of a new infrastructure from scratch, with an ESX cluster from scratch

and when the servers DNS themselves will run inside the cluster,

Then, it is advisable to use IP addresses instead of the domain name COMPLETE for the right ESX environment?

Here's what I've done so far:

    -installed 1 ESX host

    -installed donain controller as VM

    -installed PSC and VCSA

    -created the new cluster

-installed the second ESX host, added to the cluster.

I installed a VM DC as the first thing after the installation of the initial ESX host, I could have started using the domain name COMPLETE for the ESX environment at this time.

    However, I didn't do it.

For installation of the VCSA and when you add ESX hosts to the cluster, I used IP addresses instead of the FQDN names.

It seems stupid and dangerous for me to use domain COMPLETE the ESX hosts themselves, because the domain controller is running in the cluster.

So I used IP addresses only to ensure the ESX HA cluster and the characteristics of heartbeat stay ok if something were to happen to the DNS server.

However, the VCSA installation and when you add hosts to the cluster,.

the MISTLETOE gave me a warning, indicating that it is preferable to provide a FULL domain instead of an IP address name.

I am of the opinion that if you have no physical DNS servers, it is not a good idea.

My opinion is that when your nameservers inside the ESX cluster itself and you do not have 2 redundant external DNS servers, so it is not wise to use the FQDN for your ESX hosts, PSC and VCSA setup.

In my view, using the property intellectual property is much safer in this case.

I was wondering what is your angle on it.

Do you see the same way, or have different opinions?

    Hi smetter,.

It is advisable to have a working DNS for vSphere environment however the use of DNS for things like vSphere HA have been removed in more recent versions of the product. Refer to the section of the guidelines of the general network of this document for more details: https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmw-vsphere-high-availability.pdf

With this in mind I wouldn't be worried about use of FULL domain for the addition of services like the ESX host, etc.. Failure where HA would be restarting the virtual computer, there is no dependency on DNS so it will continue to work as expected and, subject to the availability of resources the virtual machine starts on another host.

According to your vSphere licenses, you may also like to consider the implementation of anti-affinity DRS VM to keep your DNS Appart servers and on different hosts. This can prevent your servers DNS are declining when the failure of a host. You must have Enterprise edition or later for this.

    Kind regards.

  • How to launch and use the VMware tools

After installing 2008r2 as a virtual machine and install VMware Tools, I am unable to open the tools and use them.  I did two days of searching, and I can't find an answer to my problem.    Downstairs is an action I took, but I would appreciate any help from the community.

    Purpose:

Laboratory at home training and certification.

Hardware environment: (based on "Chris Wahl" home Build Lab)

    SuperMicro Motherboard MBD-X10SLH-F-O

VMware Workstation 10 with all updates installed with administrator privileges

    VM #2: vSphere 5.1 install

VM #1: The Windows 2008R2 VM I have a problem with VMware tools.

I've deleted and rebuilt the two VM three times now, thinking it was my environment somehow.  ESXi 5.1 works although I have not built anything there yet.  I am able to access this part of the laboratory fine of vSphere Client.

    VMware Tools:

Within the Services of VM 2008 I can see VMware Tools started service, the icon in the system tray notification area and see the files on the C: drive of the virtual computer, but there is no way to open it.

I followed several links to create a virtual laboratory, but should not be this hard to run a program.  It's my first time that you try to use VMware tools, but I'm following the steps in the lab below install procedures.

In the middle of the page of "Blog Editor" part 4 "build the ultimate vSphere Lab is where it installs the VMware tool and lowest after restarting Windows Update service I'm stuck to the next step."

"Open VMware Tools, go to the Shrink ."  Click on the button of the prepare to shrink . »

?  How to "open the VMware Tools?

Now on the path I have searched for and deleted and reinstalled the tools, but always without success.

Here is a link where I found the following measures to be taken, but it doesn't work either.  The "NOTE" at the bottom, it's something I noticed and made sure was right when I installed the last time tools.

I even found a link to where you can download the tools separately from the ISO files, and yet, it does not work.  A LITTLE HELP PLEASE!

So next step that we did was
1 uninstalled VMware Tools in the virtual machine
    2 restarted the VM
    3. manually deleted/renamed the C:\Program VMware Tools
    4. manually deleted/renamed C:\Programdata\VMware\VMware tools
    5 Rebooted
    6. install the VMware tools
    7 Rebooted

The issue is not reproducible after the same

NOTE: Make sure that the virtual computer CD player points to the correct image.  I found it always go back to the windows 7 iso image on my C: drive from physical machines to where the image 2008r2 was on drive E:

No need to reinstall again. You're not missing something. VMware has changed the VMware Tools tray and removed options that were available in previous versions. • questions to the vmware horizon workspace

    Hi guys

I implemented the vmware horizon workspace in my test environment. It works very well. but now I have two questions:

    1. is it possible to add storage smb from a windows file server to the device of data? I would like to automatically synchronize the directory on the file server windows with vmware view on appliance workspace data. and for all the users in my domain. (so I think that the vmware agent horizon is not the right tool for this action)

    2. is it possible to implement authentication twolayer? I use two layers for vmware view horizon in this workshop, but I can't find any documentation or the button for twolayer auth in the vmware horizon workspace

Thank you much for the help

    Kind regards

    Hello..

I'm glad you like what you see so far...

1 no, today it is not possible to add Windows shares data.

2 horizon 1.0 workspace supports RSA Secure ID for two-factor authentication.

  • Resizing disk and extend the volume

    Hello

We receive many questions with drives running out of space. So I want to automatically resize these discs and trigger the server assigned to run diskpart to extend the drive. otherwise, there has no presence for the task of resizing automatically.

My problem is: is he a psossibity to trigger this disk extend with powershell plugin vco, without installation on each server certificate and by adding it as a powershellhost to vco.

My workflow resizing works and the powershell script is also no problem. But how to group them?

My idea was to run the script to a central powershellhost. Unfortunately PS plug-ins use ps-remote access and remote in a remote session access is not possible: S

That's why I'm looking for any other in comments operations to handle this.

Do you have any other idea or a good indication.

    Thanks in advance

    Hello!

    I see two ways:

1 use my Plugin PowerSSHell for vCO, he called Powershell via SSH, so you might be able to use ps-distance communication.

    Download and info here: http://www.vcoportal.de/powersshell-plugin/

To download powershell ssh server: http://www.powershellinside.com/powershell/ssh/Default.aspx (a free license is available as far as I KNOW)

(A central script host script was exactly the use case, I created the plugin for)

    2. you use VIX-plugin (if you're on vSphere 4), or the API vSphere comments 5 to call the script inside the VM guest.

  • Cannot extend the disk in virtual machines on ESXi4.1

    Hi people,

Sorry if its posted in the wrong forum. I am unable to extend the VM disk but its having enough space I added it drive. The problem here is one of the disks are having 2 C and D partition on the same drive / same vmdk. Therefore, it is possible to expand the D drive shows unallocated after adding the space. I know through Standalone VMware converter 5.0 we can resize. If any other option other than that. Any help on this will be appreciated. Please see the screenshot.

    Thank you

    vmguy

    Hello.

I have met many of them, and Converter is the best way to address them. When c is first, you can copy other data readers to new VMDK, but Converter is often easier and faster than that.

    Good luck!

  • Best way to extend the partition?

Do you have a Server 2003 P2V to new hardware.  I used Acronis to clone the server cold, created a new virtual machine, restored to the virtual machine with Acronis, configured with VMWare Converter and then add the VMWare tools, etc.  Everything seems to be fine, except the food not extend the partition.

I put a partition of 100 GB for the virtual machine, but restoring recreated the original score of 68 GB and another 'unallocated' 31 GB.

What is the best way to extend the partition, so we can use all of the 100 GB?

    Thank you for your time.

If a C: partition, you can use extpart, but a c partition: no, you can use the construction in the diskpart tool and extend. With one exception: If you have multiple partitions on a single HARD disk, you will need to use VMware Converter.

  • Copy of VM's to the test environment

I'm working on a project to create a test environment with a copy of three servers that exist currently in production.  The production and the test environment both run ESX 4.0.  The production environment runs on blades with iSCSI storage, the test environment will be a stand-alone physical server with enough disk space and RAM to run the three VM.  The test environment will be moved to a laboratory test on a separate network cannot be routed.

I have the new side of VMware and my questions do I need to copy all of the files belonging to the VM (vmdk, vmx, vmxf, vswp), that I need to copy the logs also?

use VMware Converter to convert to virtual appliance, and then import the virtual appliance in the new environment by using the Client vSphere4.

  • Impossible to extend VMFS datastore (after extending the LUN)

    Hello people,

I have a big problem. I extended my unit number logic of my table from 300 to 500 GB. Then my ESX saw it perfectly, 500 GB (vmhba1:2:8).

I tried to extend the vmfs data store, but this is post the follow-up of errors:

Configuring the host error: unable to update the disk partition information

    All suggest?...

Reading Bogacki article posted, it might be a locking issue, which could probably be bypassed with closing down all the VM in this data store. However - as I have said - is not a supported configuration, and I wouldn't use it in a production environment in waat. I know there is a lot of work and downtime in ESX 3.5, but my recommendation is to create a new LUN and migrate the virtual machine.

  • Virtualize 2 DC to create the test environment

    Hi guys,.

I wonder if someone could help me find a solution.

I mainly want to improve our main DC - which holds Exchange 2000 (Yes, I know DC should not accommodate exchange roles, but this has been done before coming here)-between Windows 2000 and 2003, and then later this year, I'm going to buy a few new servers and migrate completely (and virtualize!) for 2008 and properly put in place the field.  So before you go ahead and perform the upgrade on our production servers, I thought that I would give to virtualize the domain controller using the VMWare converter. Everything seemed to happen, but when I pulled to the top of the virtual machine (in an environment test, completely isolated from true DC) and ran "adprep /forestprep" he said that he did not because he could not replicate to the schema master role is maintained on our other DC.  No problem, I thought, I'll just do a virtual schema master computer and connect them and everything will be fine.  Of course, then the replication failed between the two virtual machines, because the USN differed so I know now that it is not as simple as that.

What I want to know is the following: is there anyway I can get my scenario of two DC in a virtual environment to test the updates on WITHOUT cold clone? I'm just saying that I want to do without cold cloning because our main DC took 13 hours to fully virtualize it.  I know I can get round to again the error USN downgrade our second DC and then perform the other steps to do, but I want it to be close as possible DC production simulation and production servers can replicate perfectly, so this step will apply when I do my real upgrade.

Any thoughts on how / if I can achieve this?

    Thanks for any thoughts.
