external drive suddenly protected by bitlocker

I have just connected my external hard drive to a machine of win8 and was informed that it was protected from bitlocker. I had never heard of bitlocker and therefore have no idea of the key. I then connected the same drive to another, more recent machine and it opens as usual. He still refuses to open on the older machine or on my tv. It's obviously frustrating, and I can't find any similar situations in the forums. Any ideas?

Hi Mike,.

Thank you for keeping us updated and my apologies for the delay in response.

To further support with BitLocker, I would recommend to post your query in the TechNet forums since as per the question, your question is better suited for IT Pro on the TechNet public.

Try it on another computer. If it does not it be a bad box or cable. Try using a known working cable.

Can you please tell me how to remove the write protection, so I can continue to copy, write, delete, etc.

    Hello!

I recently bought Stor.E Art 3 external drive - mostly because there were lines like 'Encryption' and 'Password protected'

So, how can I ask these things on the external drive? I imagined, that there is a kind of software which just request password each time I connect the HDD to PC...

But there was no software other than NTI Backup Now EZ. This backup software will do this thing?

    Otherwise its disinformation user :(

Have you checked manual as well as additional software features?

  • How can I protect my folder on the external drive?

I don't see a clear answer to this question online. I want to protect a folder on my external hard drive which has some personal data. I have to protect the whole disc, just a folder + subfolders. I see that the 3rd party software programs box password protect a folder, but when uninstall you them you may lose the ability to access again if you aren't careful, and they aren't full evidence for someone who is computer savvy and I really want to see this data.

I watched a video on here EFS: EFS but it is a senseless video and provided no help to understand how it works. I created a folder to the test and does what it says. The name of the folder turned green so I know he did something, and it prompted me to create a key with password and save it, which I did. However, I can always freely open that folder and see the content, so anyone who has access to my computer is able to view that as easily as any other folder. Don't ask a key or password or anything like that. No sense for me...

I need to a single folder (and subfolders) on my drive to be protected, encrypted, whether, for other people cannot access it even if they steal my external drive and connect it to another computer. I don't understand why it is so hard to find something that can do this and how to do it.

If you enable encryption by file (or folder) with this option, which cannot be done because it is encrypted specifically with a hash of your account.  It also means that even if a system admin force - reset your password, the hash is invalidated and files that have been encrypted in this way will be unavailable.

  • TOSHIBA external drive works only with Macbook

    Hello

I have a 1 TB external drive that I used on my 2007 Macbook without problem until recently when he decided suddenly stop working. Nothing has been changed in the Macbook, I read in some places that there is a problem with enough power of drawing from the usb port to power the player, but have you tried going through a usb port and using a longer replacement cable...

    All advice welcome!

    Thank you

The question is: is this just a problem of USB connection or maybe the HARD drive starts to crime

I mean, early or late each HARD drive is going to die, and it's just a matter of time and usage of HARD drive

I recommend you to connect this drive external DRIVE on another computer just to check if it will recognize

but to be honest, the question smells like a hardware malfunction.

  • Install Windows 8 on external drive Thunderbolt - Windows could not prepare the computer to begin the next phase of installation

    Hi all

I'm at my wit's end trying to install windows 8. Let me start at the beginning: I used to have windows running on my Mac Pro ssd internal 8.1, installed via bootcamp. It worked well for a while, and then refused to start, gives me a blue screen KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. Despite some advice from lonely T, I was unable to fix and ended up wiping the partition and relocation, again via bootcamp. Yet once again, it worked for a few months, then the same problem. I made this one last time, and it only lasted 2 days... So I gave bootcamp.

I think that the hybrid MBR partition scheme that implements bootcamp is the culprit, but I don't really have evidence to substantiate this claim. In any case, I tried to install windows in EFI mode. (If I understand correctly, the hybrid MBR is set up to allow windows to install in legacy BIOS mode, but that windows 8 may now install efi, which supports my Mac Pro mode.) My Mac is the new Mac Pro (end of 2013, trash in shape), and I can say short UEFI 2.0 (I have the latest efi update from apple installed).

    The method I'm trying:

    1. create a new partition in HFS + on my external drive using disk utility. The drive has now it's efi partition and partition empty 750Go I want to install windows a 1.25 TB storage partition that I use with my mac. It has a GPT. I formatted HFS + and no FAT, because I think that disk utility creates the same hybrid-MBR as training camp every time a FAT partition is created.

    2. use gdisk to confirm that the disc does not have a hybrid-MBR. (sudo/dev/disk1 gdisk watch MBR: protection)

3 restart my mac and hold the possibility to put in place to bring up the boot efi menu.

    4. Select the EFI_Boot DVD icon (that's the windows 8 install dvd that I have in my superdrive USB drive)

    5. go in the menus of the disk selection screen installation and delete the partition in HFS +, I created to install windows on (the format option is not available)

    6. now select "Unallocated space" on the good drive and click Next.

    The problem:

Partitioning seems to go ok (there is no feedback on this basis, but it proceeds to the next screen, and all new partitions expected are there if I check diskutil list later). He said it is "copy of windows files", but then stops with the error "Windows has no prepare the computer to start the next phase of the installation." To install Windows, restart the installation. "If I restart, I can start the same process all over again and get the same result.

    The Question:

How I get this error and get windows install?

    Extra pieces:

    • The first time it happened I assumed it was the new sip / thing "without roots" in El Capitan, causing problems, then I disabled, but I still get the same error.
    • After reviewing the diskutil list output after one of installs it without success, I found that a labeled EFI partition has been created after my storage partition (the original efi partition was still there in the upper part of the disc).
    • I have windows 8.1 installed now bootcamp on my internal ssd. It was planned to use it and winToUSB to put windows on my crush, but I found that it only works with usb2. I do not have installed could cause problems with the installation on another disk.
    • Before say you I can't run windows on an external, yes you can, and many people have. I read windows sees thunderbolt internal disks.
    • I read a few other posts on this and other sites on this problem, but could not find a pertitnant solution to my situation. I found one that suggested to remove the efi on my disk partition, but that seemed like a bad idea, so I didn't try.
    • I write this at 1 in the morning after a day spent in front of the computer trying to get this working, so please excuse typos typing or other. I am pleased to provide you with any pertinant information helping you will help me.
    • Thank you!

The other thing I tried also almost succeeded:

Although I prefer to get the method above works, because it seems the most promising, is something else, I've tried that I thought worth mentioning. If you offer advice pertaining to this method rather than the above, I would appreciate it if you could explicitly declare that at the top of your answer. Thank you.

I tried to install windows on the physical disk using vmware and virtual box. The instrutctions I followed for this can be found here: http://www.andrewsavory.com/blog/2011/2156 (the only thing different, it's because it's on an external drive, I created the Fat 32 partition manually using disk utility). The first time (using vmware) installation seems to go off without a hitch, but I couldn't get my computer to see the windows partition as bootable with the boot efi menu hold-option regular refined or with system preferences-> startup disk. I think that I was using always inadvertently a hybrid-MBR at this stage. I tried to repeat this new beginning with the first two steps above to avoid the hybrid-MBR. But now when I try to create the virtual machine based on the gross vmdk, it starts to copy the files then says not sufficient permissions and fails. I don't know if it's a permission with the disk or the hard problem. I tried chmod 777 and chown $USER of the vmdk disk (/ dev/disk1s3) does not.

Wow, that was a long post...

    1. when a second drive is detected by the Windows Setup program, he wants to create his own brand of EFI (104 MB) and not to mess with the Mac EFI (200 MB). You can force it to use the EFI to the Mac using Diskpart commands.

2 instead of HFS/FAT32, create a piece of 750 GB free space and it should only get a new MSR/MSD, without the part of EFI.

    3. on your VM method, the link you have is quite old. You have a MP 2013, with references to the 2010 Mac alumni and is a bit too archaic to be useful. http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/install-a-Windows-7-partition-on-Mac-OSX-Wit hout-optical-car-or - usb.1836959 / #post... seems to work for many and can be useful for a test. It also uses Winclone.

  • Fixing of SSDS as external drive

    Hey,.

I own a 2012 MacBook pro with SSD. Last year I had a problem with my SSD SATA cable (the Mac showed gray

screen with a question mark and after reading this forum, I discovered that the cable is often a source of this kind of problems). After replacing the cable, everything worked fine.

I am now faced with a new issue where the Mac has become suddenly very slow, showing a spinning wheel, 95% of the time.

    (1) is it possible that it's still once caused by the SATA cable? Memory, CPU utilization, everything seems fine. A turning almost endless wheel can be caused by a bad SATA cable? (Maybe since IOs to SSD taking too long).

    (2) in order to check the number of cable, I connect the SSD drive via USB as an external drive. Can I detach the SSD at the jury, connect it via the external USB adapter and start the Mac? That will just work "out of the box"? Or do I somehow configure the external SSD first?

    Thank you

    AVI

Assuming that it is one of the 2012 with a removable SATA models, it is possible, it is again the same problem, but I would start more generally...

To solve this, please see hosting the  poster forum and also see my ad in another recent thread what to try and what to post here.  Safe mode and the Console.app and activity Monitor.app and related controls will provide a view of what is happening here, and if it is related to the connection of disc or not.   Etrecheck can also display errors that arise here and you can try hardware diagnostics and see what those report.

  • Trying to access the files on an external drive. It is denied. Some files are accessable. / problem solved. But please help me learn.

    Hello.

I use XP Home 32-bit Edition. My a-external hard drive is a Western Digital My Book Essential 1.5 Tb USB2 HARD drive: model number: WDBAAF0015HBK-00.

I can't access all files on the external hard drive. Currently, I mounted it on a folder. I have some files tif on the external hard drive and wanted to access my photos.

The message that I had to right click and select open with was "access to C:\(Folder tree) denied." I tried my programs and the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer of image editing. Nothing works.

When I right click on the images of problem the only options I have are: open, print, edit, Preview, open with, send to. None of these work.

Some files are not accessible, and others. Unaccessable files do not have a preview image in the window pane (on the lower left side when I'm in the folder).

This can happen if I didn't 'delete safetly' external hard drive or there was a Brown out? Some of the tif are too long file extensions? Shouldn't windows warn me too long file extensions?

I consulted the havn't the reader for a while.

I can not drag and drop the files to my desktop. I can't copy, cut, delete or move the files. When I click on a file, and then click file - properties: nothing shows up and he says: size: 0 bytes, size on disk: 0 bytes. But when I click on the file in the folder, it says that it is 23.3 MB. I can move the folder on my desktop.

When I select all the files and click on file - properties: it is said attributes: read-only and hidden. They are green in box, I have not did those and it does not work. I clicked on Advanced Options, again I had unstapled the ReadOnly and hidden, then I unchecked all 4 options because they were greenboxed too. It's green boxes, not the check marks in both situations. What are the green boxes?

    ______________________________________________________

Fixed a problem. I dragged and deposited the files on my desktop and I can access it. At this point, I just thought, since I had problems with the music files (mp3 or wav) is too long and is not be able to access or remove them, but I can delete the folders to get rid of them.

So my question is why am I unable to access the files? This is a limitation of my external hard drive? Can I test or repair? What is this kind of disk with this version of Windows? What is a format? It's NTFS. Computer management indicates that the external drive is healthy.

It seems that some files are not named as long as others and I could access those. Is there a limit on character/attribution of Tif or all types of files? If so, is it the same? Pourrait - linked to the way in which the external (or internal drive?) is setup in the policies tab? Are each disk different? They seem to be a little more limited than the internal hard drives, but I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the usb2.

Does anyone know if there is a program or a way to know how many letters or numbers have been used? Microsoft Word and Works a number of words, but Works 9 (I have that) doesn't have a number of letter.

Contradict you yourself.  At one point, you said:

    > I can not drag and drop the files to my desktop. I can't copy, cut, delete or move the files.
    and then you say:
    > A problem fixed. I dragged and deposited the files on my desktop and I can access it.

This side, the general approach to access in this case is "Ownership" of these files.
"How appropriate a file or a folder in Windows XP"

This probably occurred because the files were created on different computers by users with different Secure ID (SID) or you have reinstalled Windows and files were protected to some extent.  Since you are using XP Home Edition, the only way to see the security settings is to start your computer using safe mode and log in as an administrator.  This will give you access to the 'Security' tab when you right-click on a file and select 'Properties' (as described in the article above).  Apart from connecting with Safe Mode, you can use 'Cacls' command from a command prompt window (start-> Run-> "cmd") to view or change permissions on files

  • detected external display suddenly stopped working - displays black screen

original title: detected external display suddenly stopped working

    Hello

I have searched in several forums, but have not been able to completely solve this problem.  It has been set provisionally and has not yet.
    This system I have:
HP TouchSmart tx2 tablet pc with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 x 64-bit (Home Premium)
    AMD Turion (tm) X 2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM - 82, 2.2 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card
I have been working for more than a year with a monitor flat screen Dell ST2310 external monitor and works very well with the setting "use external display only.  From one minute to the next two screen went black so I forced a restart and again the same problem.  I decided to manually disconnect the external monitor by unplugging the VGA cable from the laptop that turns on automatically to the main display as it would if I am disconnected display.  When I connected the VGA cable again the same question in the two screens were entirely black.  I unplugged once more the VGA cable if I could change the settings in Windows mobility.  I plugged back in the VGA cable after changing the settings of "external display only" to 'mirror' devices and after playing for a bit, with the Windows Mobility Center, I had the external display to work again my regular settings: "external display only.  This solution lasted a day and now works in the main screen and the external screen is completely black.
I tried in vain to solutions:
-Change VGA cables continues to experience the same issue.
-Tested according to the specifications and Dell monitor Monitor works fine if the backlight is not the problem.
-Records update for ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card and driver generic PnP Monitor and Dell ST2310.
-Uninstalled ATI Catalyst Manager and re install now as AMD Vision Engine Control Center.
-Checked AMD Vision Engine Control Center recognizes the connected external display.
-Uninstalled the driver Dell ST2310 and re installed the driver.
-On the screen settings have tried to extend the desktop on the external screen (second)
Now, this is what's going on and don't know how to fix it:
-Windows Mobility Center detects a monitor external, even when the VGA cable is disconnected.
-When it detects the external display it sometimes detects it as DELL ST2310, sometimes as a generic Non - PnP monitor.
-Sometimes under "Monitor" in the Device Manager, there are several monitors generic Non - PnP contained also the Dell ST2310 and generic PnP monitor.
-When the external monitor is connected, the screen is completely black and does not work even after changing the settings Windows Mobility or Fn F4.

  • Windows Vista will not read external drives

I had an external hard drive connected to my computer earlier today. All of a sudden, my computer froze and started to make noises beeps, then I stopped and released my external drive.  Now, whenever I plug a drive it tells me that I have to reformat. However when I try to reformat the drive, he told me that the format could not be completed. It allows me to format NTFS, but that does nothing for me. I need to format in FAT or FAT32, but it won't let me. I even reformatted my drive to FAT32 from another computer, but when I plug in Vista it still says it needs to be formatted.  I got lost.
