Failover storage and a new analysis while running virtual machines?

The guys from storage must update the firmware on our HP EVA 8000 without. Currently, all my LUN is replicated to another EVA. The guys from storage you want to switch on the other EVA LUN so that they can make updates of the firmware without changing anything. I planned a complete failure of all my virtual machines and hosts so that they can make the switch. Basically stop all virtual machines, stop the hosts, making failover LUNs and then turn everything back.

My question is there anything that can be done online? We tried it a couple of weeks, and we were hoping to have just the storage team launch the failover and a new analysis on the ESX hosts. All ESX hosts that had run VMs on those LUNS could would not fail on Mon after a new analysis. I have another cluster which can also display these LUNs. They were able to rescan and see the failure on Lun without problem. The only difference is that these other hosts have not the virtual machines running on these LUNs.

If this working or is this the behavior that we should expect to see? This change in all with vSphere?

Management has come back and asked why we must take a complete failure and whether it can be avoided in the future.

> do failover LUNs and then turn everything back. My question is there anything that can be done online?

Depends on your storage space.  If the LUNS are replicated really, they are up to date and your paths are correct on the ESX AND you use alternating (unfixed) it should work fine.

This really isn't a function of VM Ware, because technically, storage is really transparent to ESX.  If you can find a valid path to the data, it will use it.  Just to make sure that is not the FIXED path.

  • Vcenter stop while running virtual machines?

    Hello

I'm planning an upgrade of our vcenter Server physical 4.0 running on win2008 32-bit to a 64-bit on the same hardware installation. I read through the different docs from 4.0 to 4.1 migration, and it is clear to me how to migrate.

But what I don't know: I have leave vcenter closed for a few hours, while maintaining all the virtual machines running? I want to use the same material; This is why the server will be unavailable for 1-2 hours.

If possible: should I disconnects me my first current esxi hosts or is this not necesssary?  They will remain licensed?

    Any help appreciated,

    ARO

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

You need not vcenter to be in place for the virtual machine to run. Some features will not work as FT or DRS, but as long as the ESXs is executed, the virtual machine will stay online. Not need to unplug the hosts, they will keep their license information.

    Good luck.

  • Closing and reopening the workstation with running virtual machines

I have recently upgraded to 10 Workstation and I am having a strange problem. In preferences, I have checked option which says "continue to VMs run after the closure of workstation. In workplace planned 9 this option worked exactly, but workstation 10 seems that partially works as expected. In Workstation 9 I could close my computer, and then open then in from the tray icon to always see my virtual machines running with the small green icon play on them. However, in the 10 workstation I close the workstation and all my virtual machines continue to run, but when I reopen it workstation all my virtual machines appear in the workstation as if they are off; but they run because I can RDP for them. If I right click on one of them all is grey with the exception of mark it as a favorite and delete. I can't power off, change the settings, see the console, or anything like that. The shows the icon that VMs are being run, but even suspend, stop or suspend tray icon options or background open VMs do not work either. The only way I found actually to get my computer working again is to use the Task Manager to kill the task of vmware - vmx.exe. As soon as the task is killed for each workstation running, they operate again in the workstation.

If anyone has encountered this problem, or know a fix for this? I have run several virtual machines and never have any idea that vmware - vmx.exe is for what VM when needing to change something on one of them. I make sure that I can kill them all in order to make a change to one of them.

    David Moore

Ok. I have this problem. However, the fix has been an awareness in desperate need of repair. I ended up uninstalling the VMware Workstation and then remove all references to the registry with REGEDIT. I then restarted the computer and reinstalled VMware Workstation again. After this heavy treatment, it works again the way it should work. It seems that the upgrade to the latest version of Workstation 9 to the latest version of 10 break something somewhere.

By the way, Dayworker, it was and is version 10.0.3.

  • Is there a way to export / print to a pdf file which is flat? That is like printing on paper and a new analysis?

Is it possible (if not, there should be MAOIs) export / print to a pdf file which is flat? That is like printing on paper and a new analysis? (I do not want to use this last)

I could list 100 reasons why it would be useful to be able to do this, then please none of the usual "why would you do that?' or ' is not the right way... blah blah blah" which is too often here.

If you are Windows on a machine, you can print the file to the Adobe PDF printer, thus creating a new copy of it.

If you want to convert the entire file of images, then you can export it to the image files (PNG, for example) and then create a new PDF from that.

If you want to flatten the dynamic objects (such as form, comments, links, etc.) then you can use a simple script to do.

There are many ways, your request may be interpreted... If you provide information on what you are trying to achieve it will be easier to help you do.

You can edit vmx file while the virtual machine is running? And is it safe?

    Hello

Moved to the forum of the Virtual Machine and the guest operating system.

If you edit the VMX while the virtual machine is powered on change is not levied until the power off then power on (not reboot) and there is a good chance that the change will be deleted when turn you off the system. So it is not safe to do so.

  • ESX3.5U4/VC2.5 - move vmdk to adequate data store and extend the drive on the virtual machine

ESX3.5U4/VC2.5 - move vmdk to adequate data store and extend the drive on the virtual machine

Objective: move vmdk to store data with adequate storage and then increase storage D: 20G to 100G

Converter is not available on this architecture. Can I migrate cold vm to the different data store, no prob.

Question: Without use of the converter, method 3 can be used without a secondary vm? In other words, just by using target vm offline, online, offline? Or is it a problem of signing/OS disk on the Windows Virtual PC?

I need to move vmdk in different LUN and extend drive vm windows on D: (non-OS drive). Is this possible via the single procedure? Options?

To use method 3 to http://communities.vmware.com/thread/81121 requires available vm 'secondary', I did not.

Method 3? Using of vmkfstools and another VM of Windows to extend a drive

o stop the VM to resize

o log in the console ESX Server via Putty

o Type? vmkfstools? X & lt; new size of drive & gt; vmfs/volumes / & lt; storage volume name & gt;. / & lt; virtual server name & gt;. / & lt; the virtual disk name & gt;? That is to say. /vmfs/volumes/Storage1/my_vm.VMDK new disk size can be specified in kilo, mega, or gigabytes and will be the total size of the new disk. So if you want to increase a virtual disk of 20 GB of 24GO you would put 24000 m or 24g

o the second virtual machine to help stop

o change the second virtual machine settings and add the first virtual machine hard drive

o power on the second VM and load the disk management snap-in and verify that the first virtual machine disk has unallocated on it space

o select Start, run and enter diskpart.exe

o the command? the list of volume? This will show you all the volumes.

o select your volume based on the results of the list volume command, IE. ? Select volume 1?

o type the command? extend? to extend the volume

o check again the disk management snap-in and the volume is expected to be expanded with a greater ability

o stop the second VM and remove (do not remove) the record of it

o turn your first VM and the new space should be there and ready to use.

Also, I'm already aware of Dell extpar:

    http://support.Dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us & CS = 19 & l = in & s = DHS & ReleaseID = R64398 & formatcnt = 2 & starts = 83929

for VI3, vmoiton of storage is made by RCLI plugin or a 3rd party

    I prefer the plugin

    http://www.virtualizationadmin.com/articles-tutorials/VMware-ESX-articles/VMotion-DRS-high-availability/storage-VMotion-SVMotion-VI-plugin.html

In addition, if the option to increase the size of the disk in the VIC is grayed out, it sounds like a permissions issue.  Finally, you can not extend the disc using the VIC, if the customer in question has a snapshot.

  • Need more disk space to run virtual machines on R710 server with no available drive slots

    Hello

We have a server R710 with five $2.5 146 each and three 600 GB SCSI disks SCSI.  We have no more slots.

We want another 2-4 TB of space.   This server is used to run virtual machines to test software applications.  We have need for decent speed, but more important still need a cost-effective solution for running virtual machines.

The budget would be in the $1000 range give or take.  I might be able to get $3000, but a $10,000 would be too.  We could consider removing disks from 146 GB 5 and replacing them with those larger, but that might not be the first choice.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

What you ask for is really difficult to do within the budget without sacrificing important performance (from what you have right now in performance).

Any external storage solution (Dell) is out of the question for $3 k (think MD1200/1220).

    The market, 2.5 "drives max out at 1 TB at 7200 RPM, 900 tr/10 k or 300 GB @ 15 k RPM.

Dell has disks 1 to 7200 RPM 2.5 "company (for PowerEdges) for ~ $440 (see here). These are not the best choice if you want any kind of good performance.

You might look into upgrading to 900GB 10 k rpm drives. These run $799 each today on the Dell website (see here).

If you replace one of the 146 both each and let rebuild you could then use the extra space to another virtual disk. This would give about 2800GB.

If you can't budget 5 of them, according to the current setup of raid, you can watch a backup and restore of the virtual disk of some 146.

    You could:

-use 2 of the existing 146 in raid 1 for operating system and the extra space

    -use 3 x 900 in raid 5 (which would give a crude 1800 (Go so ~ 1674 usable))

-Use the 3 600 existing RAID 5 (which would give ~ 1116 GB usable)

  • Adding a new drive on a Virtual Machine

    Hello

I need to add a new disk to a virtual machine that runs as an Exchange Server.   Normally, when you add the new drive I would choose the store with the Virtiual Machine.  Unfortunetrly the Datasotre stored on the virtual machine is virtually complete.  What are the implications of the selection 'Specify a location' during the creation of the disc.  I'll always be able to use VMotion?  and how the disk get stored on the selected locvation.  He appears as a vmdk file in a folder named after the Virtual Machine?  Anything else I should look for?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Concerning

    Kevan

You mentioned already correctly more points:

    • the vmdk will be stored in a folder with the name of the virtual machine
    • vMotion is not affected until all guests have access to the data store
    • According to the snapshots the ESXi version are either created in the home folder of the virtual machine (before 5 ESXi) or in the folder parent of vmdk

  • Failover storage and ESX3.5U4

    Hey there,

During our recovery tests today I came to a conclusion that make me worry. So, let me start by describing the installation:

ESX3.5U4 servers running on HP BL685c G6 servers.

2 x bays IBM DS4700 located in two remote data centers.

Level 1 LUN is replicated at distance from DC1 to DC2. Each logic unit number is a data store (not more than 1 store data by logic unit number).

    The problem:

When I try to switch the storage - change the role primary in DC2, even if the LUN IDS are the same, the ESX does not detect previous data warehouses. When I try to add a data store - I see all LUNS, but if I try to add as warehouses of data, I get a warning the data will be deleted. I tried many configurations, but was not able to get the ESX mount a LUN being replicated data store (relationship suspended, withdrawn relatively active relatively fair reveresed roles).

So I wonder - is - it possible to all ESX failover that runs on separate storage? All descriptions I found only describe how failover machines, but storage is always one and the same. There is nothing on the configuration of the DR with replicated discs. So I wonder - disaster - when I lose the DC all immediately, how can I recover if the ESX does not recognize the replicated data? This is absurd.

    So please help.

    BR

You can leave it as (main data store) because you will be running a computer virtual LUNS replicated but referrring to the old path /vmfs/volumes/.../.vmdk within .vmx while vmdk after failover, is there supposed to be something different (/ vmfs/volumes/snap / hard). But what I did last time with HP Continous Acess to the recovery site is, I need to reregister the virtual machines in this component data store snap-in to fix the hard path to the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file. Otherwise, I wasn't able to turn on the virtual machine.

  • The addition of storage and the new controller scsi causes existing NIC become ghost

    Hello

I have two Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 VM that each have two NICs configured to connect to different networks. When I add additional hard disks (RDM) connected to a new SCSI controller and restart the virtual network adapters one existing machine disappears (it becomes a ghost card) and a new network card with the default config is displayed in its place.

The result is that I have to go through the process of removing the ghost network card and reconfigure the new card with the correct network settings and connect to the correct port group.

Anyone know why this is or how to avoid it?
