Need more disk space to run virtual machines on R710 server with no available drive slots

Hello

We have a server R710 with five $2.5 146 each and three 600 GB SCSI disks SCSI.  We have no more slots.

We want another 2-4 TB of space.   This server is used to run virtual machines to test software applications.  We have need for decent speed, but more important still need a cost-effective solution for running virtual machines.

The budget would be in the $1000 range give or take.  I might be able to get $3000, but a $10,000 would be too.  We could consider removing disks from 146 GB 5 and replacing them with those larger, but that might not be the first choice.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

What you ask for is really difficult to do within the budget without sacrificing important performance (from what you have right now in performance).

Any external storage solution (Dell) is out of the question for $3 k (think MD1200/1220).

The market, 2.5 "drives max out at 1 TB at 7200 RPM, 900 tr/10 k or 300 GB @ 15 k RPM.

Dell has disks 1 to 7200 RPM 2.5 "company (for PowerEdges) for ~ $440 (see here). These are not the best choice if you want any kind of good performance.

You might look into upgrading to 900GB 10 k rpm drives. These run $799 each today on the Dell website (see here).

If you replace one of the 146 both each and let rebuild you could then use the extra space to another virtual disk. This would give about 2800GB.

If you can't budget 5 of them, according to the current setup of raid, you can watch a backup and restore of the virtual disk of some 146.

You could:

-use 2 of the existing 146 in raid 1 for operating system and the extra space

-use 3 x 900 in raid 5 (which would give a crude 1800 (Go so ~ 1674 usable))

-Use the 3 600 existing RAID 5 (which would give ~ 1116 GB usable)

  • resize the disk space on the virtual machine

    Hello!

I have a small problem, when I converted a virtual machine on my esx server so I chose 14FR for the virtual machine.

But I now realize that I need more space on the virtual machine. but the problem is that I stop the virtual machine and

give more space but the does not get more space than any alcolated in diskmgmt. and there I have to

    make a new partition.

Can I add a disc more on C: by do not format the drive? or can I add more disk space to a new partition

(if I add 20 GB now and want to add 20 extra GB to the same partition in 2 months or something like that?) ??

  • How to migrate a virtual machine from the server with DAS to another server

    Hi guys,.

questions. 'More' essential Kit. VMotion is available

I have 2 physical servers, two of them have DAS (not SAN Central). SO I want to migrate a virtual machine on server A to server B. is it possible in this situation?

Or should I have versions of more expensive VMWare do?

    Thank you
    Dmitry

You can use clone. I would close first to the bottom of the virtual machine, but a VM slowed would be very nice clone. You can also use the VMware conveter. VMware converter can make a hot clone, including synchronization of last-minute changes, stop the source machine and put under tension the clone.

  • iCloud Photo - need more disk space on my MacBook

This is my first post, so I sorry if it's really obvious, but I have some don't search online but cannot find an answer to my problem. I hope you guys can help.

Ok. Here's my problem. My Macbook Pro has a 250 GB hard drive and is now complete. I noticed by iPhoto library is 90 GB. Ideally, I want this 90 Go back if by saving my pictures on an external drive. I would then download the entire library to iCloud Photo so I could access it from my iPhone / iPad / MackBook Pro when I don't have access to the external HD at home. Is this possible?

I signed up for 200 GB of space iCloud and turned on iCloud Photo. About 700 MB of downloaded photos, but that's all up to now that no more have downloaded. Why the entire library do not download?

Ideally, I want all 90 GB stored in the cloud, so I'll switch to 90 GB library on my laptop on an external drive to keep a safe backup who will give me the 90 GB back. Then if I take pictures on my iPhone in the future they go straight to the cloud and takes all the space on my MacBook Pro HD / iPhone / iPad. Also I added content not iPhoto to my library, it will be stored on the external hard drive and also upload to the cloud.

Any thought or is - is not going to work. Any help much appreciated.

90 GB will take a long time (weeks) to download. Are you being just can't wait?

  • Cannot save the virtual machine in VMWare Server 2

    Hi all:

I created a VM (12.1 OpenSuSE 32bits) in VMWare Workstation 7; then I copied it to a host VMWare Server 2.

When I try to save the virtual machine via the web, the server fails (or at least interrupts the response from Web page), so I tried to save it via command line.

After searching a bit I found this:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1006160

The question is now that I can't find any vmware-cmd anywhere, and when I run vmware-vim-cmd I get the following error:

    vmh2: / data/vmachines/postgresql-box # vim - vmware - cmd solo/registervm /data/vmines/postgresql-box/postgresql-box.vmx
    Connection failed: vim.fault.NoPermission

So I'm stuck... someone can help me?

BTW: what is ESX, ESXi and what version of ESXi is included in VMWare Server 2?

    Thank you very much

    Luis

I can't tell you exactly what are the causes of the problem. What I would try (a solution) is to create a new virtual machine in VMware Server with the same specifications as the original one, then copy the two files hard in the new virtual machine folder and edit the .vmx file for the new VM 'OpenSuSE - 12.1 - cl1 - 000001.vmdk' use as its virtual drive.

  • Error message, not enough of disk space to run the defragmentation

Cleaning disc already used and removed unused programs.  Still get popups that say "disc not enough disk space for number of updates available" "not enough disk space to run defrag" "not enough disk space to run the system restore" I'm positive, I have more than 200 MB of free space on c:, (if updates are somewhere on my computer and using all the space?)  This xp computer is not much used, and certainly didn't have the amount of used space?

Anyone know where is the problem?

None of this has worked.  What has worked is that I discovered that Norton Antivirus used up to 57% of my c drive.  Entered their downloads of programs and the program downloaded 2012, which automatically deleated the old Norton application.  Apparently, whenever the old application done an update to download, it would wipe out not at the same time old files is no longer needed.

in any case, I now 57% free space.

    Thank you

  • I want to allocate more disk space for my c drive and remove the drive d

I want to allocate more disk space for my c drive and remove the drive d. I 26 gig on the d drive and only using less than 1% of it, and I have the same amount on c, but only 39% c left. How to do this.

LEM explained the problems that you tried to resize partitions on the same drive.

You can create more free space in C in carrying one of the measures suggested below.

The default allocation for the restoration of the system is 12% on your C partition is more generous. I have them would be reduced by 700 MB. Make my computer right click on your icon, and select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select settings but this time find the slider and drag it to the left until it shows 700 MB and output. When you get to the settings screen, click on apply and OK and leave.

A flaw that might be useless which is for temporary internet files, especially if you keep no copies on the disk offline. Setting the default value is 3% of the walk. Depending on your attitude to copies offline, you could bring it to 1% or 2%. In Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options, general, temporary Internet files, settings to make the change. At the same time, look at the number of days, the story stands.

The default allocation for the basket is 10% of the disk. Change to 5%, which should be enough. In Windows Explorer hover over your Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the slider from 10% to 5%. However, try to let you become so complete that if it is complete and you delete a file by mistake it will bypass the Recycle Bin and have gone forever.

You can generate more space in the system (usually C) the folder move partition.

For temporary Internet files, select Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, temporary Internet files. Settings and move back.

To move the storage folder Outlook Express select from Outlook Express Tools, Options, maintenance, store folder and change.  http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideoe/files/store.htm.

How to change the default location of the My Documents folder: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310147

You may also change the default locations of the files in Microsoft Office programs when you choose to move the My Documents folder. For Word, go to tools, Options, file locations, highlight the Documents, click on edit and change the path. For Excel, go to tools, Options, general, and change the default path.

My Documents is one of the many the created system of special folders, which include my pictures, and my music. It can be more easily modified using TweakUi. Download TweakUI, one of MS powertoys, here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp.

In TweakUi, select workstation, special folders. You can scroll down to see the full list of special folders to the left of the button to change the location.

You can move programs, but to do this, you must uninstall and reinstall the program. With Word and Excel, the existing data files are not affected by reinstalling. Most of the work in question is going to be reinstall all updates issued after those that are included with the original Microsoft CD / DVD.

If your drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows directory of your C partition you will some uninstall files in your Windows folder in general: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$ etc. These files can be compressed or not compressed. If compressed text the name of the folder appears in blue. If these files are not compressed you can compress. Right-click on each folder and select Properties, general, advanced, and check the box before you compress contents to save disk space. On the general tab, you can see the winning amount by deducting the size on disk size. File compression is only an option on an NTFS formatted disk partition / partition.

I'd be interested to see a report of Disk Defragmenter. Open Disk Defragmenter and click analysis. Select view report, and then click Save as and save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents folder. Open the file, place the cursor anywhere in the file, select Edition, select all to select all the text and copy and paste into the body of your message. To do this, before you run Disk Defragmenter because it is more informative.

Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, cleaning disk to emptying your trash, delete temporary Internet files and other selected options. I recommend also you click Other Options, System Restore and delete all but the last system restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter

Using the system restore option is most appropriate when your system is slow and you need to increase the free disk space on your C partition. If you have errors that could be solved by using the system restore to your system settings back to before that the error occurred initially, do not use this option.

Select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, view, advanced settings and check the box in front of "show files and folders" and 'Hide protected operating system files' are unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second element. You should also make sure that the box before "Hide extensions of known file types" is not checked. Notwithstanding, there are some files that are hidden. Again, you will not see the System Volume Information folder.

I read up on the subject and found that I have to re size a partition. Anyone know what it could be? I can't find anything that looks like it has something to do with VMware. Does anyone know what size and what file system is it?

  • Create more disk space

I need to create more disk space on c:. I deleted all unvanted programs, deleted temporary Internet files etc., but this is not enough. When I searched through all directories, I found that my TEMP directory contained 14.6 GB of data. The problem is that when I press ctrl + A to mark all files, it says 36.4 MB. I ticked 'show all files' so there must be another type of hidden files.

Is it possible to see the files and it is then possible to delete some of them or what the system and update files?

  • Windows 7 seems to take more disk space than expected on the C:\ drive

Original title: size of windows 7 the disk

I installed windows 7, 64 bit on my machine.

I have made 3 partitions: C = 100 GB and the rest of the form 1 TB disk space divided in two other partitions. (those who have files it contains)

Now, when I go to the COMPUTER, with windows (C) says that he has only 47 GB free which means windows takes more than 50 GB. But when I go on the content of this partition and see the size you of files... It shows only 12 GB, and there is no hidden inside folder.

Can someone help me with this? Thank you

Windows 7 uses about 8 to 10 GB of disk space.

Click Start, type: advanced system settings

    Press enter on your keyboard

Go to the System Protection tab

    Click Configure system restore

Make sure that the system restore does not use too much disk space.

Use the wheel to reduce the amount of disk space.

In addition, the amount of RAM you have installed, it will take more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files.

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, I use more disk space on my hard drive. I don't want to replicate my entire file. I have 26000 photo photos in I.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, I use more disk space on my hard drive. I don't want to replicate my entire file. I have 26000 photo photos in I.

You need to duplicate pictures unless you want to use the PSE as external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a library owner, which should never be marred with programs other than iphoto. Written to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the best way to corrupt and lose all the photos it contains.

So you can either set PSE as external editor and send the photos of in iphoto, or you export photos from iphoto to use them outside of this program.

  • Add more disk space for the ESX host

    Hi all

I need to throw more disk space to my ESX hosts.  I know how to bind records in Navisphere and present to the ESX host.  Once in the VI client, I "think" I need to go to the host and do a rescan of the HBA or something like that?  I'm a little unsure of the market of part VI to add more disk space.  Could someone just point me in the right direction?  Please note that I am looking to add more disks to existing hosts in existing clusters.  It adds no storage to a new host... rather an existing one.

    Thank you

    Jonathan

You are on the right track.  Re-scan storage card, under the configuration tab select storage adapters, select the adapter and click on the link of the new analysis.  Then go to the storage section and there should be a link in the top right of the screen that says storage Add.  Click on that and it will guide you in adding/setting in form/naming of the new disk.

  • VMware Workstation is unable to open one of the virtual disks required by this virtual machine because it is larger than the maximum file size supported by the host file system.

I'm transitioning from Windows XP (64-bit) on a new computer with Windows 7 installed.  I undertook to VMWare Workstation 6 7.0.1 in the process.  The problem is with a very large RAID 5 volume on the new system.  It's a score of 5.45 TB (TPG and NTFS).

When I try to start a virtual machine on this volume, I get the message "VMware Workstation cannot open one of the virtual disks required by this virtual machine because it is larger than the maximum size of the files supported by the host file system.".  This is obviously not true.  If I copy the virtual machine to another drive on the system, it starts without a problem.

Anyone have any ideas on how to work around this problem?

try to add this line in the vmx file:

    diskLib.sparseMaxFileSizeCheck = "false".

    Maybe it helps.

    VMDK-type do you use?

monolithicSparse? -C' is the only part type more?
