  We need a bit more info here. What you saw and where (or how do you here). XP can compress old files when they were little used. These files must be stored somewhere, and I think that you have found where. Do not delete them. If you went on the cleaning disc in the properties of a hard disk, you see where you can disable this active or disabled, but turn it off takes more space because you don't compress these files more. It can take a long time to turn it off too much because the system must find every file, unzip it save it to the hard drive and do the following. If it runs out of disk space free of it, it will stop and make either but then your hard drive will be very close to full and your entire system will slow down (it takes a good amount of HD to 'play'.

  Looks like you need more disk space. Get another drive (expensive) or go to disk cleanup and try to compress the entire drive. It will take a lot of time, maybe hours or overnight depending on the working speed and the player. But it's free. Overnight is best. I think you can stop it (read the help on this). Do not turn It Off during the race. Bad move.

  Disk Cleanup tool detects removes the old compresses files unused for some specified duration and there is no way to decompress these files.

  You can use the method mentioned in the article for the unzip compressed on the computer.

  Compress, (Compact in American English), removes waste of space, not your messages. Please read below, but if compact you and still get the prompt, after return. It is another question.

  With SP2, Automatic compaction in the background has been removed because of problems he has caused.   To keep things running smooth and harden faster:

  Do not archive mail in default OE folders. It will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

  Try to perform the clean boot on the computer and check if that helps.

  Thank you for your response.  You say that it's OK to delete old files compressed during the disk cleanup?  If I delete these files, how can I know what I'm deleting?  Where are they available for consultation on my C drive.  I don't want to delete a file that I regret deletion.  I did a disk cleanup, but I chose not the old files compressed to the deletion for this reason.

  Do not delete the 'old files compressed."  The system may well have compressed the files you want to keep.

  By default, the XP Disk Cleanup tool offers "compression of old files."  If you use this option, the system compresses the files that have not been used for some specified time (I don't know the value).  The files remain on the hard drive - exactly in the same place, they were--and if you access a compressed file, the system he unzips on the fly.

  If you have not changed the default settings of the system, when you open Windows Explorer, the already compressed files this way are shown in blue (a green file is encrypted).

  1. do you have a third party compression/extraction of software installed on your machine?
  2. do you get an error message when you try to extract the files?
  3. is the relevant question for the particular file type?
  4. don't you make changes to your computer before the problem?

  Follow the steps and check if they help.

  (a) access the location where the file is stored

  (b) right click on the file

  (c) click Properties in the drop-down list

  (d) under the general tab check the listed file type.

  Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or does not support the codec used to compress the file. You may encounter this error message for the following reasons:

  1. the file type is supported by the drive, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the player.

  2. the file might have been encoded with a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.

  I have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 SP3. Two nights ago, I ran Disk Clean Up and Defrag to improve speed. I used compress old files for the first time. Tonight I tried to access certain personal records and documents and they went. When I run a search for them, they are not accessible and are moved to the folder of My Documents and Settings or gone completely. I can only assume that this is due to the use "compress old files". How to access these compressed files?

  You say that you are missing a lot of files and folders...

  Compressed file always appears in a Windows search and will be in a default blue color.

  If you think the specific name of some of the files you are missing or part of the name, see if they find themselves in a search for Windows and if they do, where they are.  Adjust the search with more advanced options and tick the boxes in system folders search, search hidden files and folders, hidden files and folders, and search subfolders (this way it will look everywhere).

  Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the desktop, then the (Local Disk (C). assuming that XP is installed on your C drive

  Below, you should see the Documents and Settings folder, open then, and you will see a folder for each user on your system (and perhaps some that you do not recognize).  Each user has a folder under Documents and Settings.

  Double-click the folder associated with your user name (for example, Andrea) and you will see a My Documents folder that belongs to you.  Look in here and see what you can see if you understand how it works...  Look in my pictures, my videos, my music, etc and see if you see one of your items.

  Then go back up to the Documents and Settings folder and open the folder associated with the next user (even if you don't recognize it) and look in the Documents folder for this user (for example the Documents of Jose) and search there and see if you can locate your missing documents.  Repeat for all users folders Documents and see if you can find your stuff.

  I can't imagine what happened to your stuff, but thinking that perhaps your XP user profile has been corrupted somehow and when that happens, XP login with an account that works will record and you get connected, but this new account will have all the documents in it since they'll be in the Documents folder for another user whose profile corrupt (maybe).
  If this is the case, you can fix it, but you should see if you can find your stuff first.

  Anywho, use Windows Search to search for specific files or even wildcards as type names and see if you can determine if the files are actually missing or are just in other places when you are looking.

  I use the word "stuff" a lot today for a reason but that is my style of back.

  I have a folder zipped on my computer which has 2.84 MB of data in it.  I can access the folder and check the properties of it using windows Explorer.  But when I try to open the file, I get the message "windows cannot open the folder.  "The compressed (zipped) folder [the name of the location and file names] is not valid.  Why this file is not valid.  The name and the location is OK?  Why I can't access this folder?  I tried the extrace all files option and tap of properties has the file open by windows Explorer (which opens at all other files zipped, I downloaded).

  your risk of losing everything on the disc.

  A 17 GB drive is tiny. Everything you do to win the top place (be it
  compression or anything else) will be a temporary measure. The only one

  What is a memory drive for you?  A USB thumb drive/USB?  If so - do drag & drop or copy & paste the files.

  Copy the file on the external storage device on your desktop (drag & move or copy and paste) and then do what you want to copy it to your desktop.
