'File name' error too long when you copy a folder to a DVD disc

When I copy a folder that contains a large number of files on an external hard drive, I have no problem, but if I try to copy the same folder to a DVD disc, I get a message indicating that a file name is too long.  My first question is why do I get the message for DVD and not the external hard drive?  My second question is: How can I generate a list of files in my folder that have too long names? My second question is already other post on the forum, but there was no answer.  Is it because it is not possible to generate such a list?

Thank you

It depends on what is called the 'file system '. File systems are how files are stored on a disk. Many of them have limits on how long the total file path can be. DVD and external hard drives use different file systems.

If you want a list of all the files in a folder, open a command prompt. Type this in:

CD "C:\path\to\folder".

and press ENTER. Replace path\to\folder with the path of the file in your file that you want to check to make sure this filepath is in quotes!

Now type:

dir /s > 'output.txt '.

and press ENTER. This will tell the guest to make a list of all the files in this folder and in each subfolder, and then store in a text file. This will allow you to view the list and I hope to find the long file names. Once you have found the long file name, go to that file, and then change the name.

Here is an example of the above commands. Let's say I have a folder named "foo" in the My Documents folder. I first type:

CD "C:\Users\Entegy\Documents\foo".

and press ENTER. Now, I want the list of files to be placed on my desk. Then I type:

dir /s > "C:\Users\Entegy\Desktop\filelist.txt."

And voila, I have a list of all the content of foo on my desktop files. Just make sure that your path ends with .txt and you'll be fine. And don't forget to put quotes around filepaths!

  • Try to restore a lost Thunderbird profile, but can't "move profile" because the file names are too long

    I'm having a problem with Thunderbird that is addressed in several comments here and on "mozillaZine", but trying to follow the instructions for fixing it, I ran into a new problem that I see not addressed. The initial problem is that described in this thread, where my files and everything just disappeared, and I am invited to start to create a new profile:

    https://support.Mozilla.org/en-us/questions/1040003

    Following the links in this thread, I get to this - and since my address book has also apparently gone, I click the internal link to the section titled 'Lost profile':

    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_profile_that_suddenly_disappeared

    Step 1 then sent me here:

    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

    Step 2 on this page says: "Copy the profile folder where you want to store." When I try to do it, however (using Windows Explorer on Windows 7), he gets to halfway through the copy and then hang up because it clashes with a file name that is too long to copy. And according to the prompt that tells me this, there are many more yet to come long file names.

    Ignore this error and I just ignore these files? That means the copy of profile won't be complete, which I think would be dangerous or would just cause other errors. Or is there some simpler way quite do what I originally planned to do, which is to recover the profile which has mysteriously disappeared?

    Again, I'm under Thunderbird on Windows 7 and it was used for years without ever encountering this extremely irritating glitch. I'll be grateful for any help.

    Here are three different approaches, I suggest:

    1 see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles and see if you can switch to that you want to use the Profile Manager.

    2. While TB is NOT running, use a prompt with the following commands: Note: place the entire path in quotation marks.

    • CD "the full path of your current profile directory name '.
    • xcopy "the full path of your"good"profile name" / s/h
    • now check with the Windows Explorer, and switch to him as above

    3 change "profiles.ini" (using a text editor such as Notepad) to point to the profile 'good '. "profiles.ini" looks like this:

    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile = 1

    [Profile0]
    Name = default
    IsRelative = 1 * change this to 0 *.
    Path = yt20rg5n.default * change this to the path and the name of your profile of "good."
    Default = 1

    Let me know how it turns out.

  • Binder to move my profile on another computer. Thunderbird file names are too long

    Hi, I am trying to copy my profile for a new installation on another computer (win 7 box to win box of 8). In the past, it worked smoothly without any problem (did not have to do it for a few years).

    I packed my profile in winRAR and copied over the network to the new box. Then when I tried to UN-package, I get 1 403 error (for example):
    C:\Users\bishwa\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\Thunderbird.rar: Failed to create Thunderbird\Profiles\kvab3n9j.default\Mail\Local Folders\Archives.sbd\2008.mozmsgs\!~!UENERkVCMDkAAQACAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABgAAAAAAAAAtzIdrbNYbEyD2Ii4jsEC1sKAAAAQAAAAiX4V0vbwoEOHNtCONhiLYAEAAAAA%40netspace.net.au.wdseml

       Total path and file name length must not exceed 260 characters
       The system cannot find the path specified.

    I am running the latest version of Thunderbird.

    So is this a fundamental flaw with the design of software and how it plays today with Windows? Is there a work around?

    Thank you!

    Just delete anything mozmesgs, it's more than a thousand files, you have just to get Windows search can find mail. A waste of space and a poor search to start.

    Hello

    Try changing the "maximum Table name length' and '"column name maximum length"in Manager topology ODI.» This is, in the "other" tab of the chosen technology.

    Set the new value = original value - 5

    You must assign the appropriate value to 'column name maximum length ".

  • Name of the item too long when you use ROWTYPE

    I encountered a problem with the xml elements names longer than 30 characters. Seems that it has something to do with ROWTYPE. Creation of this function is successful:

    < pre >
    FUNCTION to CREATE or REPLACE test_fnc
    RETURN OF XMLTYPE
    AS
    var_return XMLTYPE.
    l_dummy DUAL.dummy%TYPE;

    SELECT XMLCONCAT (XMLELEMENT)
    "TEST."
    XMLFOREST)
    l_dummy "THIS_IS_OVER_30_CHARACTERS_LONG".
    )
    ))
    data_set
    IN var_return
    FROM DUAL;

    RETURN var_return;
    END test_fnc;
    /
    < / pre >

    However, the specification of the ROWTYPE variable gives error ORA-00972 (except if I shorten the name of the item...):

    < pre >
    FUNCTION to CREATE or REPLACE test_fnc
    RETURN OF XMLTYPE
    AS
    var_return XMLTYPE.
    l_dummy DOUBLE % ROWTYPE;

    FROM DUAL;

    RETURN var_return;
    END test_fnc;

    Has anyone previously met, or have any ideas for a solution? I could specify all my variables as TYPE, but as there are many in the tables it would be easier to use ROWTYPE.

  • String control GPIB, too long when you use a multicore processor machine

    I have a HP 3457 A multimeter I communicate with the help of GPIB. I have two machines that have identical operating systems installed. CentOS 4.8 (equivalent to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8) with the version of the kernel: 2.6.9 - 89.0.25.ELsmp.

    The first machine has a Pentium 2.8 GHz processor. We used this setup for a few years now without any problems. Given that the core processors go far, we need get our system working on a multi-core computer software. So, I loaded all our software on a new machine with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have only this one all deadlines irregular left before calling this experience.

    In our code, we issue the following command to the multimeter and check a response:

    char * pm_init = "QR 0; PRESET; BACK OF THE TERM; END; LOCK ON; SREAL OFORMAT; « ;

    If (!) () (er = ibwrt (pm_ud, pm_init, strlen (pm_init))) & ERR))

    On the Pentium machine, it works fine. The multimeter does not have on the Core2 Duo computer. If I have this divide into two commands as follows:

    ER = ibwrt (pm_ud, "QR 0;") PRESET; BACK of the TERM; ", strlen (" QR 0; ") PRESET; TERM BACK ;")) & ERR

    If (!) () (er = ibwrt (pm_ud, "END; LOCK ON; OFORMAT SREAL. ", strlen ("END; LOCKING IN ONTARIO; OFORMAT SREAL ;"))) "& ERR))

    It works on both machines. However, it is a ugly real difficulty. Can someone tell me what is so different from the way in which the driver NOR past the verses of the long chain the two shorter chains?

    Thank you.

    Sorry, I thought that VISA facility would bring along the difficulty that we need, but when I look back it did not include a fix for Linux.

    This means that we don't currently have a driver available that will solve this problem, but there is a solution, if this is indeed the problem you see.

    The workaround is to disable DMA for your GPIB interface. To do this, you will need to open a handle to the jury and use the ibdma command to disable DMA. For example:

    handle = ibfind ("GPIB0");

    ibdma (handle, 0);

    At this point you should probably keep the handle open until your program is out, to ensure nothing resets the jury and allows again to DMA.

    As you can imagine, disable DMA can have an impact on performance in your application. If you make small, such transfers would probably be with a multimeter, you are unlikely to notice a difference in performance. If you transfer large size pads, you may encounter CPU utilization and more low than you would when using DMA.

    Please let me know if this workaround lets your program works, because this will tell us if this is the problem you are having, or if something goes wrong.

  • Downloaded a zipped file/folder would not, the name is too long.

    I have downloaded a compressed file/folder to a trusted site that I always. I unzipped the file (Music mp3) successfully and added to my itunes. When I tried to drag the file of music on my ipod, itunes shows his location could not be found. I went and checked on the folder I unzipped and all these other files with weird characters appears. It took 145 GB of space in my external hardrive (thank goodess). Now, I can't rename or delete the file or the folder itself. I tried a few removal tools but it did not work or when I try to download, my anti-virus software reports me. I need a way to get rid of the file. The budget is tight, so it would help if it's freeware. OR better yet a way to removed without having to download any software. I tried to delete it in safe mod and BACK. Without success. Tried Unlocker and D something software too.

    Have you tried Unlocker which would have been my first recommendation.  I don't know other programs (especially turned to the long name) free file deletion. If Unlocker doesn't work, or none will remove utilitly in Vista (because Unlocker is better than Vista).

    The commercial product ($19 I think) says that he specifically deletes files whose names are too long. http://www.abtollc.com/Folder-Delete.aspx.  I suspect that this will do the trick, but of course I can't be sure so try there is a risk that it will not solve the problem in spite of spending money on it.

    Your problem with the file may be a permissions problem.  Make sure that you have the permissions of all rights and take possession (and maybe both parent folders).  Don't forget to check the Advnaced properties for special permissions that restrict rights or inherit permissions from parent folders - you may need to remove if you already have all the rights on the main screen.  Here are the procedures:

    To view your permissions, right-click on the file/folder, click Properties, and check the Security tab.  Check the permissions you have by clicking on your user name (or group of users).  Here are the types of permissions, you may have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions.  You must be an administrator or owner to change the permissions (and sometimes, being an administrator or even an owner is not sufficient - there are ways to block access (even if a smart administrator knows these ways and can move them - but usually should not because they did not have access, usually for a very good reason).)  Here's how to change the permissions of folder under Vista: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-vista/set-file-folder-permissions-vista/.  To add take and the issuance of right of permissions and ownership in the right click menu (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/05/21/take-and-grant-full-control-permissions-and-ownership-in-windows-7-or-vista-right-click-menu/.

    To resolve this problem with folders, appropriating the files or the drive (as an administrator) and give you all the rights.  Right-click on the folder/drive, click Properties, click the Security tab and click on advanced and then click the owner tab.  Click on edit, and then click the name of the person you want to give to the property (you may need to add if it is not there--or maybe yourself). If you want that it applies to subfolders and files in this folder/drive, then check the box to replace the owner of subcontainers and objects, and click OK.  Back and now there is a new owner for files and folders/player who can change the required permissions.  You can change now switched to read-only (even if the main folder indicates that they are always read-only - you can access yourself as the owner).  You can keep them in read-only to other users, customers and administrators even (although they can support themselves and access, if they wish, and it is really not that you can do to stop it except protect the file with a password by using a 3rd party product.)  Here is more information on the ownership of a file or a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html.  To add take ownership in the menu of the right click (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/.

    I have no other suggestions at this point.  What is the EXACT and the full path of this folder?  Depending on where it is, we are able to create a new user profile (treat your as if it is corrupted) and traansfer all data EXCEPT the folder in the new profile.  Then delete the old provile if he leaves despite this file - it might or it might not (I'm not sure).

    To try this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profileuse.  If that is the only available Administrator Profile (you need to be an administrator to fix this), enable the Hidden Administrator Account (HAA) using http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_passwords&p=1&tid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055&mid=d20f9db4-7b2c-48be-a087-7835dc2a9055.  If you don't remember the password, try nothing because that's probably what you (or seller) did during the installation.  Once that is done, don't forget to disable the HAA to save it in case it is necessary once again and for safety reasons (since people often try to hack into systems using this account).  Do NOT use the HAA as your administrator account because if you lose the only administrator on the system account or it is damaged again, then you're watered.

    You can also try to enter in a command prompt: click on start / all programs / accessories / command prompt and right click on command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.  There Cd type a space and then type the path of the fulll name the folder in question (if it even appears).  Once inside the folder type del *. * and see what happens.  It can give you the same error message, or it can remove. Once the content is deleted type cd, and then type del (yes I know it's long) and enter. This can remove the folder.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Hello

    you keep insisting on 'my

    There is no "My Documents" on Vista

    It's only 'Documents '.

    Windows Vista renames 'My Documents' as, simply, 'Documents '. "My music", "My pictures" and "My videos" have also lost their prefix and moved to directly under the directory (profile).

    Hello

    a. What are the data you're trying to move?
    b. what operating system (for example Windows files) files?
    c. What is the method that you use to copy data?

    Windows 7 supports filename up to 260 characters. I would ask you to decrease the characters in the file name and then try to copy the files.

    Let us, run disk checking hard disk utility and then check.
    Here's how:
    1. open the computer by clicking the Start button, click computer.
    2. click on the drive you want to check, and then click Properties.
    3. click on the Tools tab and then, under check for errors, click Find now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will be a problem, but not to fix them.
    To perform a thorough check, select search and attempt to recover bad sectors. This analysis tries to find and repair physical errors on the disk itself, and it may take much longer to complete.
    To check for errors file and the physical errors, select both automatically fix errors in file system and search for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    Depending on the size of your drive, it may take several minutes. For best results, do not use your computer for any other tasks while it checks errors.

    Important: Running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data can be lost.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Stanley,

    You can read the following article and check if it helps.

  • How to remove a file whose name name is too long.

    Hi, a simple q for someone.

    I deleted a bunch of files and a rest.

    How can I delete a file whose name is too long?

    I can't delete it, even with some administrator privs.

    I tried to do in a powershell window, but does not use the correct flags.

    Repeat the same message.

    Too long to go to the bin file name.  Shorten the name and try again.

    Any advice.

    Thanks in advance.

    Try using 7z (7-Zip) to rename or delete the file.

  • Cannot delete the file - paths are too long

    Trying to delete a folder.  He complains that the folder contains items whose names are too long for the Recycle Bin.

    The problem I think is that this folder is a backup copy of an old folder AppData, in which it seems to be an almost infinite folder "Application Data" series - I am sure that these are in fact the links as opposed to records, but there is a huge tree full of them.  At the end of some branches, there are some 'real' files, but then several sub-branches of Application Data files.

    So I guess that when I try to remove the top-level folder, the full path to the way in which the files down is just too long.

    When I shift-DELETE, nothing happens, and I tried to remove it from the command prompt, nothing helps.

    Don't know what to do next.  I want to just get rid of the folder tree.

    Mike

    OK, well, irritating as it is that there is no apparent way to force Vista to do, I just crossed the entire folder structure and renamed each 'Application Data' folder to 'a', to shorten the overall paths, and this then allowed me to remove the top-level folder.
