fill a NIC four-port with built-in port

Hello everyone,

Recently, we bought a NIC four ports to be able to work without a switch.

Previously, this is how we have worked:

* 4 camera (Allied Manta G201C)

* camera is triggered (rising edge) separately, but almost simultaneously.

* PC: quadcore, 64-bit, Windows 7 64 bit system

* Run-time Vision Builder 2012 license.

* Programmed with Vision Builder HAVE 2012.

* Switch: 1000 MB

* Interface programmed in c# (receives images of the relevant info 4 programs and displays on the screen).

Now that we have rid our switch, we hope that all our problems-dataloss will be more as well.

However, when you install the NIC we have seen our camera (which had fixed IP-addresses). To solve this problem we have filled our 4 ports as well as our integrated port. I kept reading about this, I learned that apparently fill is no longer necessary if you use WIN7. Then, we could use just link-local address, and it should work.

My question: are there downsides to my "bridging method"? In other words: should I remove my deck and use DHCP instead of the fixed IP addresses, or I can leave it as what?

With sincere friendships.
Tom

Hi Tom,

Scott here, at Allied Vision...

The only slight difference between options you mention would be at the start of "time of discovery"...  DHCP takes a little longer to find the few others in relation to IP fixed nodes.

But assuming that the discovery happens perhaps once a day (week, month) for maybe 30 seconds and then the system works for hours (days, weeks), unless you have control of start-up wishes, thoughts of system maintenance on the e.g. replacement of cameras, etc., probably the best to follow the advice of "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
