  Try to buy Adobe software off of eBay or similar sites/vendors is not allowed is extremely risky and not a good idea...  A few years ago Adobe has ceased to recognize these valid purchases because of all the false elements

  You need get the serial number of your Adobe account on the corporate web site, once there go in 'my products '.  You can get the number from there.

  Adobe applications show that you truncated intentionally serial numbers, with only 20 numbers that you have seen.  The full number is 24-digit long.  That's done on purpose, not to encourage software piracy.

  The serial number is platform specific. You cannot use a different platform. You have the version of the Fireworks window, so it can be installed on the windows machine. There is also no option to make an exchange of Windows platform to the Mac as CS5 is no longer supported because we went to the cloud. If you want to use the application on a Mac, then you can go for subscription of cloud.

  I bought Fireworks CS6 and is just went to install but it keeps telling me that the serial number I have is valid but cannot find a product calling it on my computer and gives me the possibility to change the CS5, 4, or 3. It's a download.

  What you describe would indicate that you have bought/granted a level, not a full version updated version... it fails to find the previous version which qualifies you to activate the upgrade.  Perhaps then it is asking you to provide the serial number for the previous version as an alternative to installing it.

  If it's windows vista or newer, you may need to run Fireworks as administrator for the directions adobe posted at work.

  "Cannot be activated" error in the former Macromedia products

  Right click on the shortcut of fireworks, select run as administrator, try adobe method posted here and restart Fireworks as you normally would and see if it sticks.

  Just to give you a bit of a warning, likely of CS5 does not work on El Capitan without issues - according to which apps you are trying to use.

  If you disable your software before wiping the machine, you will need to contact Adobe. You will need your serial number or the handy Adobe Identification Code .

  Before you get much too far away from yourself, you could consider to put back your old operating system on this machine so that CS5 will actually work without problem. (Or just to get a subscription to the CC. It includes CS6, CC, CC 2014, CC by 2015 and whatever they call the version that just came out two days ago...)
