  My guess is that Thunderbird on the computer created XP file "deleted" you see on the Vista computer, more specifically, what IMAP has created. When you opened the TB on the machine Vista IMAP updated TB to reflect changes made on the XP machine. IMAP will not let you delete the folder because it is linked to TB of XP.   If you have your e-mails showing that "thread", you will get the issue you discuss.

  If you had a backup in iCloud or iTunes that contain messages you can restore the backup device to retrieve messages.
