For ESXi 4.1 - 2805 Adaptec RAID controller?

Hello.

ASUS is not come through one of the PIKES are delivering controllers, I am looking for an another SAS/SATA Raid Controller supporting at least 6 disks and Raid 1 + 0, what I also learned as ESXi requires that it be a H/W Raid Controller.

I'm looking on the Adaptec RAID 2805 controller specifically.

It is one of the adapter entry level Raid controllers, then it is offered at a low cost and whereas it will be a small "House" use server runs a number of images of Windows/Linux, I don't think it would be as sensitive as the price difference is to choose an Adaptec RAID 5805 controller instead.

It is, does anyone have any experience with the Adaptec RAID 2805 controller? Since it is not listed on the compatibility guide, however the Adaptec RAID 2405 is and as far as I can tell the difference is the number of channels op. the 2405 would properly cover my needs as well if I could find a retailer for her near me.

So, the question, because any who have experience running VMware ESXi 4.1 on a Raid 1 + 0, using SATA disks with any of the listed controllers?

OK, found a Danish dealer who could acquire the LSI card.

My raid controller is LSI MegaRAID SAS 9271-8i - 128xHDD

    Thanks for your time.

You must install the CIM providers for controller LSI/MegaRAID on the ESXi. But it seems that they are not yet available for VMWare 6.0, if you try the 5.5.

Check 'Software downloads'-> 'Management software and tools' article on above page LSI.

Thereafter, you need a workstation on the same subnet and you can install MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) and connect to the CIM provider.

Here's a KB on LSI for VMWare 5.0 for example tools, but you might find more / more detailed by Googling a bit descriptions: VMware KB: ESXi 5.0 Server Management Tool media LSI

  • create the virtual machine from windows NT 4 server with adaptec raid 5

I have an old Dell (1998) server running windows NT 4.0 sp6a.  He had a raid 5 configuration using the controller raid adaptec SCSI 2940.  2 discs failed who broke the raid set.  I had a disk recovery company to recover the data and they have scratched off readers and gave me a SATA with all volumes.  I found a procedure to create a virtual hard disk (.vhd) and then converted to a hard and used to create a virtual machine in VMware workstation 7.  When I turn on the virtual machine, it begins the process of starting windows, shows the boot menu, select normal or mode VGA, goes through the process of NTdetect, display processor and memory but then gives a BSOD with the message inaccessible_boot_device.

I changed the hard to affect the buslogic ddb.adaptertype, but it gave me the same problem.

is there a different driver that I need for an adaptec raid controller or if the typical SCSI drivers should work?  If the typical SCSI drivers should work, so my problem might be in my Boot.ini because it shows that he is supposed to start on the partition (4) and this sata drive may not have scores exactly as they were on the raid configuration.  I tried to mount the volumes not in read-only mode, but the partition that I need to change the boot.ini file is partition (2) what mapping VMware won't let me open mode not readonly.  whenever I have, select it and it opens the partition (1) mode not readonly.

I know this sounds complicated then I hope I described with precision.

  • Supermicro onboard Intel and Adaptec RAID configuration unrecognized in ESXi 5.5 U2

Hi, I have a supermicro X7DAL-E r1.1b motherboard has integrated Intel and Adaptec sata raid controllers. To enable raid controllers, I go into the BIOS and enable the raid configuration for intel or adaptec. I tried two raid controllers and created a configuration raid 5 by going through the bios of each controller. However, when I start to go through the process of installing ESXi 5.5 U2, I see not a logical drive, all I see are hard drives that I thought were configured as a logical drive in raid 5.

I know that I am using an old motherboard which is not on the HCL, but I just haven't the money to spend on equipment. I really want to make it work if possible. I tried to download ESXi 4 but it is no longer available . I understand I tried to use an older version to see if it contains the necessary drivers for it work and attempt to port these drivers in ESXI 5.5.

I was wondering if someone actually got this similar problem with supermicro Board and whether a solution or workaround has been found in which ESXi 5 can recognize the raid configuration? If this is impossible, it can't be done, that's what it is. I'll deal with it or put in place.

    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Not sure about this 'r1.1b' version, but original X7DAL-E has no onboard hardware raid controller. What he has is i5000 chipset, which offers the raid software-(aka bios-, faux-, etc.). This is not supported by ESXi (for very good reasons). And even if it were, no cache, you would get terrible performance...

  • Help Setup RAID SATA for ESXi 4.1

    Hello

It is the first time that you try to use vmware.  Any help is greatly appreciate!

I just built a server around the Intel s5500hcvr mother. I have 6 SATA HDD I want to set up in a RAID. The integrated RAID controller seems to be very limited and does not seem to be supported by ESXi 4.1 (when I run ESXi 4.1 installation and it asks for a location for installation, all my discs are individually listed instead of virtual drives that I created with the RAID controller)

    My questions:

    (1) what is the suggested configuration of HDD (RAID levels / number of berries) for ESXi 4.1?  Can I create 1 RAID 10 array and set everything up to that?  or take one of my disks and install esxi 4.1 on it and then create a RAID with the rest of my discs and use it to store data?

    (2) anyone can provide links to some SATA RAID controllers that are known to work with ESXi 4.1 (and is the supposed to recognize virtual readers created by the RAID controller setup ESXi 4.1)

Your motherboard has a RAID controller software which, as you have discovered, is completely not taken in charge by ESX/ESXi... You will need to get a RAID controller that is on the HCL for SAS and SATA hard drives (not one with battery backup write cache) so you can use any type of RAID configuration.

My preference for Internal RAID configurations (on the host) are two drives mirrored for ESX/ESXi to reside (preferably being SAS 10 k or 15 k RPM, 73 GB or 146 GB in size) and then another table for the data store. You'll want to keep the data slot store table 2 TB-512 b size in order to present to ESX/ESXi as a LUN. Or you will need to get a RAID card this split of the support to the top of the table in the smaller of the virtual drives that can be presented for ESX/ESXi and LUNS.

Search for controllers using the LSI MegaRAID chip as a good first lap. Some Adaptec cards should work, but I've seen people post questions on those recent (more recent than in the past). MANY manufacturers rebrand/efficiency the LSI MegaRAID Controllers server, such as the Dell PERC 6 series cards.

For the use of 4 disks SATA, RAID 10 (on a BBWC, fully supported, controller) will give you the best performance. It will compare with SAS drives however. IF you do not plan on any virtual machine running with anything beyond light IOPS / s then you should be ok (or with very light loads)... If this is going to be a production server, then get the SAS drives all around.

  • Cisco C240-M4SX / 12G SAS Embedded Raid Controller Queue depth Reporting resulting in ESXi 6.0

    All,

We have been a customer of vSAN VMware 6.0 for the last 6 months of our environment entirely on servers of Cisco C240 M4SX with the Cisco 12 G SAS integrated Raid Controller.   Everything in the environment was working well until we started to bring in data warehouse loads in the environment and began to notice performance around latency of disk and most important issues still outstanding IO high.  After that ESXtop and ESXCFG examination we found that the length of the queue announced to the adapter ESXi has been only 234 however the VMware HCL Announces 895; 234 is below minimum spec of 256 to correctly implement vSAN.  We have worked diligently with VMware on it to try different versions certified and non certified driver async for this raid controller in addition to the most recent firmware for the raid controller.  Regardless of the change of the depth of the queue remained 234.  The presence of FBWC affect the depth of queue announced to the operating system?  VMware support has indicated that it is clearly a problem "hardware".  Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

Had the chance to spend some time in the laboratory and removed the cache module.

After that, I now get "207", so I would say it's confirmed that 1,2,4 GB cache modules are used to increase the depth/length of the queue for these controllers.

  • Install ESXi 5.5 restarts the Adaptec RAiD card

    Hello

I have a job im trying to install ESXi 5.5 on. I got it running on the machine perfectly well until I added a map of Adaptec Raid 3805. Now when I try to install ESXi it restarts everything when trying to load the AACRAID driver. It isn't hanging or show all errors. It just restarts immediately.

VMware claim the Adaptec 3805 is compatible with ESXi 5.5

Anyone got any ideas on why this is happening?

    Managed to solve this problem.

I had to disable virtualization technology Intel® for Directed i/o in bios and now the installation program works perfectly

  • ESXi Raid Controller

    Hello people,

I have question for ESXi and my Raid Controller.

In my server, I use a SATA-SAS/ARC-1222 Areca raid controller.

When I try to install ESXi it does not recognize my discs.

First of all, I had to set up a Raid set. I put 2 sets of 2 discs of each.

The first game has 2 150 GB SATA drives. The other 2 x 1 TB.

After that, I set up the VolumeSets.

The first series (2 x 150GB) is defined as Raid 1.

The second has raid 0 (total 2 TB).

I guess now I'm missing some kind of driver for ESXi.
But I don't know what to do now.

The only things I found were:

    http://www.areca.com.tw/support/s_vmware/VMware.htm

    and

    http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide1/detail.php?device_cat=IO & DEVICE_ID = 12728 & release_id = 196

But I don't know what to do with these files .vmk (5).

    Can someone help me?

    Thanks in advance,

    ReDNaX

He cannot use the Update Manager or anything like that because that has yet to install the host.

You must integrate the bundle offline driver directly into the ISO installation. You can use this great tool to create an ESXi ISO that contains this driver:

    http://www.v-front.de/p/ESXi-customizer.html

BTW, this driver seems a bit more recent:

  • Necessary for ESXi 5.0 RAID?

    Hi all

I am quite new to this VMware and it's our first test of society on the implementation of the VM solution to our test environment.

So please be generous if my question is redundant or I'm a bad advice.

Our server is HP Proliant DL380 G5 server, and we bought the license VMware Essential Kit.  (installing ESXi 5.0 planning)

As most of you already know, HP servers have this thing SmartStart which helps the user RAID disks before installing so that cases of dysfunction of a disk, the mirror will do its job until the fix.

But when I was reading the other articles, it is said that esxi will not recognize software RAID?

Also, no ESXi have some type of built in resources distribution system that allows virtual machines to function even if one or two hosts readers a malfunction?

Corrections, suggestions and questions are welcome.

Moreover, since it is the test environment, HP box is the only host (about 3.8 TB) and we intend to run about 4 ~ 5 VMs.

    Thank you

    Welcome to the community,

most of the DL380 G5 models come with a built in P400 SmartArray RAID controller, which is a hardware RAID controller supported. The RAID functionality is completely transparent for ESXi in this case (for example, rebuilding after a fialure). So nothing to worry about this controller

Regarding the size of disk/RAID you mentioned, you may need to divide the RAID in several logical volumes using the ACU (Array Configuration Utility) as a result of a problem with the currently used driver (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2006942). I would recommend that you create a logical volume of 10 GB for ESXi and divide the disc space remaining in two logical volumes for use VMFS data warehouses.

BTW. the controller has BBWC (battery backed write cache)? This is very important and makes a HUGE difference in the performance of the disk.

  • Qosmio F30: Need 64-bit driver for RAID controller

    Can someone help me?
    Please, I beg you!
    I have a Qosmio F-30.
Where can I find 64-bit raid controller driver?

    Is there somewhere?
    Please, help me!

Unfortunately, the 64-bit XP drivers are very rare and on the Toshiba driver page, you will find everything.
Perhaps because Toshiba is not liberating all computers laptops equipped of XP 64-bit operating system.
See only one way to find one; Google for 64 bit driver s David and maybe you succeed

  • How do I know what RAID controller works the box?

Using the VMware Compatibility Guide, how do I know what RAID controller works out of the box (no installation necessary driver, no action necessary special) for 5.5 ESXi update 2?

PS - I initially assumed that if they appear then they work OOB, but there is nothing on the page registration or landing pages of the device that makes this clear.

Once you click the RAID controller in the HCL, you will see all the supported versions of ESXi with the appropriate driver listed as "inbox" or async". There may be more driver for a specific version, but if one of them is stated as "inbox", it is supposed to work out of the box.

  • P410 HP and SSD RAID controller

In my server lab currently have a HP P400 RAID controller and it works well. But I would like to have support for SSDS and submitted them to ESXi as such. Currently the SSD is discovered in the Non - SSD.

Can anyone confirm that if I switch to the controller P410, ESXi will discover SSD drives correctly?

I bought a P410 because of this problem, but I upgraded to vCenter 5.5 before swapping controllers and it turns out that 5.5 correctly identifies the SSD on P400.

I guess it is also the P410.
