Former HP running Windows XP desktop

Could someone please help me, is it possible to change my old HP Desktop in an extra hard disk for storage and extra CD/DVD burner? Is it still possible to use it as extra players backup hard drive and CD/DVD? I hate to just trash it and thought that I could use it as more equipment. I need an operating system on it? Erase hard? If anyone has experience with this I'd appreciate you letting me know. Otherwise, I can just give up on this and send it for recycling. If this is the case, how I delete everything before I trash? Thanks for all the answers.

I'm not sure that understand exactly what you want other that you have an old XP machine you would like to put to good use rather than just throw.  I see two approaches that you can use.

(1) assuming your machine Windows 7/8 has the necessary additional connections/slot machines, you can take the hard drive and CD/DVD drive of your old computer and mount inside your computer's newest as additional drives and then throw the rest of your old computer.

(2) you can leave your machine as XP what and connect it to your home network (we assume here that you have a modem internet and router or a modem/router combination that provides the networking of all the computers in your home.  In doing so, you could set up similar to a "Network Attached Storage" device (NAS).  Use of the DVD drive on the XP machine would require connecting this machine, however (as in front of it, or remote access).

Just because support will disappear for XP will achieve no more vulnerable to threats than he is now.  And updates to products such as Microsoft Security Essentials will likely continue as they take over several versions of Windows.  If you are worried, you can manually assign an IP address on your network and omit the default gateway setting.  This will make it impossible to communicate through your router to the internet while maintaining intact local communications. (Some routers have ways to block specific computers on the internet as well).

I don't know where you heard that XP and Win7/8 are not compatible...  I was able to create a network share to a folder on my XP machine and easily connect from my Win 7 machine and mount it as a drive and move files back without problem.  You mentioned using the disc as a backup disk...  With Windows 7, by using the backup tool Windows to save on a drive connected to the network is only supported in Windows 7's ' Pro' versions. So if you can do this depends on the version of your Windows 7 machine... but moving individual files is not a problem with any version of Win7.

If you want to erase your hard drive before you throw your computer safely, you will need boot up your system XP on a CD so that the files are not in use on your hard drive.  I generally recommend the free Hirens Boot CD.  Create the CD and boot your system from her after having started from the CD, you will have several options "Nuke" to securely wipe your hard drive.  If you want to leave your operational XP machine but firmly what you remove personal folders, and then simply delete all your files to the trash can and empty the trash.  Then download/run the program "Eraser" and tell him to erase unused disk space.

Yet another option is to install a free version of Linux on your old machine... but it takes a lot of patience and research to set up how you want and probably won't work the way you would expect.

With the help of a cable USB to connect two computers is problematic.  USB like a master device and a lot of slave devices.  The computer is usually the master device.  Connect the two "masters" requires more than a cable with Type A connectors at each end.

Hope this helps,

  • How to copy the data from Palm Desktop on a PC running Windows 8.1

If like me you still find the Palm Desktop data (addresses, calendar, notes, etc.) handy and use it long after throwing the combined capacity and 'sync', you can see this is useful.  I bought a new PC running Windows 8.1 and had problems with data transfer due to a problem as I understand it, which does not exist in Windows XP, Vista or 7 versions.  Here is a summary of a way to easily transfer data from these earlier versions if you have a USB flash drive (or Dropbox, Google Drive, whatever) very convenient:

    (1) Download Palm Desktop 6.2 or 6.2.2 to your new PC.  Give a user name exactly as it exists in the database from your old PC.  This name will serve as Office Automation to create a folder name of six letters (an abbreviated version of your name) to hold the data that Palm Desktop will turn upward.  Wait a few seconds for this to happen, and then close the application on your new desktop.

    (2) in your old PC you want to transfer data from, find the folder named "Palm OS Desktop" which should exist in 'Documents' under path of folder and subfolders 'Users' as > your subfolder name > Documents in Windows 7 (can also be Vista) or may be under "Documents and Setting" folder in Windows XP.

    (3) in this folder "Palm OS Desktop" search this subfolder of six letters of your name and select this whole subfolder and select 'Copy' or Ctrl-C

    (4) locate the same name of subfolder in your new PC (which will have data zero), delete and then 'paste' the subfolder you "copied" in the exact same location.  If you did it right, Viola!  Your new desktop PC should display all the transferred data, once you open the application again.

Most of the same procedure works with PC Windows 8.1 (probably also Windows 8).  What I found different is that the subfolder of data created under "Palm OS Desktop} had 7 instead of 6 characters with a"0"(zero), added as the last character.  When finally, you copy and paste this subfolder in the new PC there so rename and add "0" for the Palm Desktop to locate these data.

    I hope this helps.

Data in XP is located in C:\Program Files\Palm (or PalmOne) \ < your HotSync name truncated > \Backup.

HotSync for Win8 has been available for quite a while now!  See the post at the beginning of this section called "64-bit Windows USB drivers for Palm Desktop" for instructions and driver downloads.

Palm Desktop 4.x and 6.2.2 use different database formats - 6.2.2 went to .mdb as an extension.

Best way to migrate data is to perform a HotSync on the new machine, or use the built-in in Palm Desktop Export/Import option.  Export the addresses and calendar files, and then copy those of the new machine.

If it is only the data (not apps) I use Dropbox. It turned out to be the best way to move things between the side Mac and the bootcamped Windows of my iMac side. I don't see why it would not work to move data from a virtual machine installation of Win to a BootCamp installation.

Hi all.  I normally wouldn't have a problem with that, but I must be missing something.  I want to create a home network or small business between my desktop running windows xp pro sp3 and my laptop running windows 7 Home premium.  I want to share files and printers.  My desktop with windows xp computer is connected to a wireless router.  The printer is connected to my desktop as well.  My laptop is wireless with the wireless router.  I tried everything I can think of to get these two devices to the network.  If anyone can help.  Don't forget, my printer is connected to my desktop with windows xp and is connected to my wireless router which is connected to my cable modem.  Internet works fine.  the laptop with windows 7's wireless and internet works fine.  just impossible to get the two see each other or share what anyone.  Thank you.

With respect to the sharing of printer (s), microsoft has a utility called 'Print Migrator'

My 3 laptops are running Windows 7 Ultimate (two are Core 2 and one is an Intel i7) the smallest HDD is 320 GB, 500 GB and the i7 is 650 GB.  But I tried many serveral ways to connect and I know it must be something simple that I'm missing.

So one of my questions would be - is it true?
My second question would be if I don't use a server are there fees for the certificate?
Thank you for all the advice?

You don't need a certificate to connect to XP Pro SP3 by using remote desktop.  I just checked in you connecting to my computer XP Pro SP3 on a Windows 7 Ultimate computer.

To connect to your computer XP Pro on the Internet, you must configure the firewall on the computer and your router to wide band to enable unsolicited remote desktop connections.

    Hello

You're confused system recovery and system restore.

System Restore makes the settings from your computer to an earlier date; It will not reinstall the operating system.

System recovery reinstalls the operating system how much you bought your machine; as for the new State.

You can reinstall by the HP Recovery Manager if your computer is still running or by pressing F11 at startup.

You can also make your own recovery discs.

If the printer is connected USB to the Windows 7 computer, what you can do is share the network (assuming that the XP computer is also connected to the same network). In this way the XP machine can see the printer on Windows 7 computer and install it. The only downside is that the Windows 7 computer must be on for the XP computer can view and print to it. I've linked to a site of third party below for instructions on how to do it.

  • Key ESC Office keyboard does not work on desktop running Windows 7 Pro 64 x

Key ESC Office keyboard does not work on desktop running Windows 7 Pro 64 x

Now, it's a boring, which several other users have reported under different threads. Because I couldn't find a post with quite similar symptoms, I made my own topic.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 x on an old one (Intel Quad-Core, 4 GB RAM, 524 GB HDD - in case, for reasons unknown to me, someone needs to know it...) , DellXPS system. Not more than a few weeks ago my home button keyboard unresponsive on this system.

I did a lot of troubleshooting, but these measures have been carried out:
    * Tested keyboard on the other system, touch ESC WORKS on the other system
    * Reinstalled keyboard and USB drivers on the XPS system, ESC key does NOT WORK on the XPS system
    * Connected to a never-before-used USB keyboard, ESC key does NOT WORK on the XPS system
    * Opened and cleaned the keyboard, tested, Escape key WORKS, Don't DO NOT WORK on the XPS system
    * Tested in various applications: Desktop (Esc will close the start menu), Photoshop, Vegas, Notepad, games full screen OpenGL,Escape key does NOT WORK on the XPS system
    * Google for possible solutions, none found...

Note: Highlights show where the ESC key does not work. I am troubled by the XPS system.

In case you missed it my list of troubleshooting steps, the ESC key works on another computer of Windows 7 system.

I have to still garble my self through the registry in the hope that someone might have an idea of the steps to follow before I lose a day to see the things that I honestly know squat. Please help if you can; What could be the issue/common application that separates this key in the Windows world and how could I solve this problem?

    Thank you in advance!

    For reference,.
No major changes have been made since the keyboard unresponsive with the exception of:
Updates to FireFox (including modules Ad-Block Plus, NoScript, which have also been updated).
    Windows Update
A 10.x MB World of Warcraft patch/update on a keyboard AFTER week unresponsive

Already installed the patches StarCraft II and World of Warcraft, which none touched my keyboard to my knowledge. I finished almost all of StarCraft II and had no problems...

I know it's a bit old, but I was living the question myself.  Thought I had found the problem and it was fixed but then it happened again.  Came to find out (by closing a program and test the ESC key) it's because Photoshop.

With the help of Photoshop, which could match the case you mention.  Not only that but I did a search ('ESC' does not not Photoshop) and stumbled on some answers/solutions workaround for it.  One is to use SHIFT + ESC ESC does not work.

Hope this helps someone.  I fell it using my original research ("Windows 7" BSE "ESC" keyboard does not) and know that others are likely to see.  If you have not already learn the cause, in the year + since your original message, then voila.
