How to share files and printers between windows xp desktop that is connected to a wireless router with a laptop running windows 7. printer is connected to the desktop computer

Hi all.  I normally wouldn't have a problem with that, but I must be missing something.  I want to create a home network or small business between my desktop running windows xp pro sp3 and my laptop running windows 7 Home premium.  I want to share files and printers.  My desktop with windows xp computer is connected to a wireless router.  The printer is connected to my desktop as well.  My laptop is wireless with the wireless router.  I tried everything I can think of to get these two devices to the network.  If anyone can help.  Don't forget, my printer is connected to my desktop with windows xp and is connected to my wireless router which is connected to my cable modem.  Internet works fine.  the laptop with windows 7's wireless and internet works fine.  just impossible to get the two see each other or share what anyone.  Thank you.

With respect to the sharing of printer (s), microsoft has a utility called 'Print Migrator'

Download & install, create copy, send a copy to the other pc to share its use.

    Help, please!

Here are the steps of general network troubleshooting. Just cannot apply to your situation, so just take the bits that are. It may seem daunting, but if you follow the steps in the links and suggestions below calmly and consistently, you will have no difficulty to implement your sharing.

Excellent, comprehensive, but easy to understand article on sharing files/printer under Vista. Contains information about sharing printers and files, and the folders:

    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not.

    A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus/security with its own firewall component program, then you're fine.  With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Refer to the safety of any third party program or the user forums for how to correctly configure its firewall. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

    (B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, the computer name tab.

    (C) in Vista, turn on password protected sharing. Create accounts of users and corresponding passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this:

Vista - Start ORB > Search > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).

  • How to share files and images between two users on the same computer?

I am running as admin on my computer and I made a separate user for my girlfriend, but I don't know how to make so that it can access the photos I have on my user of its user. I tried to just copy the files from my user him, but which seems to make another copy files. This will be inevitably a little space and so I would like to know if I could just have one, single, copying a file that we have access to our users.

Also, should I make another user for myself and leave the administrator for emergency purposes? I read something on ot that need to use an administrator account for daily purposes, and it is safer just have on the contrary another user with administrator privileges.

Make a folder on the drive, something like C:\Pictures and then right-click > properties > Security and make sure that the user has full control

Yes to the creation of a normal user account and leaving the admin account for administrative purposes.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello
I have a desktop PC in my room but no cable UTP. However, I have a laptop with working Wi - Fi connection perfectly fine so I decided to share it with my desktop via ethernet cable. Sharing network works fine, but my desktop PC Gets the APIPA IP address. I was told that this laptop creates a new network, a different IP so...

Problem is I want to share my HARD drive between the two, but it does not seem possible because the computers are not in the same network.
    IP addresses are:
    1. laptop:

    IPv4: 192.168.1.4

    SM: 255.255.255.0

    DG: 192.168.1.1

    2 PC:

    IPv4 address: 192.168.137.225
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 192.168.137.1

    Original title: bridge/Share connection question

    Hello
I was able to solve the problem. You wouldn't believe what caused it...
Years ago, I changed my username on the laptop (in control of group/user accounts). When I tried to connect to my laptop from my desktop, I entered, of course, the same username and password I use to connect every day... However, Windows requires original/old username, that before I changed the to the present, which is very weird if you ask me... I was lucky enough a few other guys made a YT video about it. Who would have thought that you had to enter obsolete user name to connect to the homegroup, even if I use any other username to log when you use the mobile phone physically.

in any case, thanks for your help.

  • my laptop has completed the automatic update of vista and after that I can't access wireless router with an ethernet cable only

My sony vaio laptop running windows vista has completed an automatic update and after that, I can't connect to my wireless network, I can access the internet with an ethernet cable.

It worked perfectly fine before the update, I know that there is a problem with what I had the same problem in the past. The way it's been solved previously was to restore the laptop to an earlier point before the end of the update. Unfortunately I can't do that and the laptop has been completed, wiped and there is no backup where I can go to restore.

I know I can remove some updates but don't know what 1, me it is another way to solve the problem.

Your help would be much appreciated.

    Thank you

    Hi Nadzarif,

You can try the following steps and check if it helps:

    Method 1:

Because the wireless stopped working after windows update, you can check the Sony support link and try to install the latest version of the drivers for the wireless card and check if it helps:

    Sony support

For more information, see the article:

    Update drivers: recommended links

    Method 2:

Updated version has a problem in the history of the update.

    Step 1:

You can check in the history of the update for the updates that are installed recently or before the show.

    a. open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then in the list of results, click Windows Update.

    (b) in the left pane, click view update history.

    c. to display more information about an update, double-click it.

See the Windows updates are installed

    Step 2:

Uninstall recently installed updates and install the updates one at a time to understand what update is the cause of the problem.

For more information, see the articles:

If you're in the Services applet according to method 1, also make sure that the Startup Type is set to automatic (to resolve, double-click the entry in the Services; Startup type is under the general tab).

You can also start Help and Support by using the Services applet (its Startup Type can be manual or automatic).

If you receive error messages when you try to follow the steps above, report completely, without paraphrasing.

The fact that two fairly common services do not work can mean that something more sinister is happening.  What antivirus application do you use?  What's his current subscription?  Its subscription has already been authorized expiration?

You can download, install, update and run MalwareBytes AntiMalware (it of free and can be removed later if you wish).

To connect two computers with a cable, not a router, it must be a crossover cable.

  • Satellite A100 - 02 M: cannot open the local area network to share files and printer - LAN Unplugged

I have an office of another manufacturer which was connected by a wireless network via a Belkin router for a laptop another manufacturers - both running XP.

I have now replaced the other laptop with a laptop Toshiba Satellite A100 - 02 M under Vista Home Premium. While I can still access the Internet from both machines, I can't open the LAN to share files and printers. The laptop shows 'LAN Unplugged' all the time. Any ideas would be accepted with gratitude.

    Ray Freeman

    Hello

    I have no general solution, but I'll try to give some advice solution;
If you want to connect laptop with LAN cable both please make sure that you use a crossover ethernet cable.
In addition, check if the network card is properly recognized in Device Manager.

You could try updating the LAN driver and remove the NIC in Device Manager to update the installed driver.
After restarting again the operating system should recognize the new (Lan) device and should install it automatically.

I also studied a bit in this forum and found a similar thread:

How to share files between computers to win 7 in the same workgroup, without setting up any homegroup?

Ok. We got it to work.

In the folder tab property shares.

Click on 'Share' - choose people to share with, click on the drop down tab, select 'All', click 'Add', in the table below, to the right of everyone, click on the "Permission level", we choose 'read '. Then, in the background, we click on "share". The next dialog box is 'your folder is shared', click 'done '.

Click on 'Advanced sharing', [x] check share this folder. Click on 'OK '.

Then, click on 'OK' to the folder property.

Then, your folder is shared on your network working group of Win 7.

What should I do to configure my windows firewall to allow network discovery and file sharing of printers and media streaming and sharing?

    Hi stephanie,.

Thanks for joining us out on Microsoft Community Forums.

Looks like the Windows firewall prevents the discovery network, files and printers, sharing, public sharing of files and streaming media. We will analyze and identify the cause of the problem.

You have a third-party antivirus installed on the computer program?

    Method 1:

    To turn on network discovery

    1. Open advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and sharing Center, and then, in the left pane, click on change settings for sharing advanced.
    2. click on the chevron to expand the current network profile.
    3. click turn on network discovery and then click on save changes. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide
    confirmation.

The article below explains all about the network discovery:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/enable-or-disable-network-discovery

If any of these responses not solve the issue, let us then run the sfc scan and check if any file system is corrupt. I also recommend to perform a clean boot in order to find the root cause of the problem.

    Method 2:

Use the (SFC.exe) System File Checker tool to determine which file is causing the problem and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    a. open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, right-click Guest, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

    b. type the following command and press ENTER:
    sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command. analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.
