Free space on my hard drive has all of a sudden diminishedfrom 50% to 10%, what happened?

Free space on my hard drive has suddenly (within a week) has declined from 50% to 10%. I used disk cleanup and defragmentation - but it did not help.

Hi williamvmcb,

Welcome to the Microsoft community. According to the problem description of free space on the hard drive is reduced by itself.

·         Did you do changes on the computer before the show?

Follow these methods.

Method 1: Run the disk check to check for possible errors.

Check your hard drive for errors

Note: If bad sectors are found in the hard drive, then it could try to repair. If you have any data on that, it can get lost.

Method 2: Performs a search using the Microsoft safety scanner.

http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

I hope this helps. Let us know if you need more assistance.

Thank you.

  • Internal hard drive has all of a sudden the write Protection

    Hello

My internal hard drive has suddenly developed the write protection and has resisted each of my attempts to change this. I found issues related to external hard drives, but have not met a subject that bears on the disk system hard to develop this problem.

The last State of operational activities that are known:

My main hard drive read/write functions were fine the day before. The only things I did today were the usual activities like browsing the web, watching videos, etc.. The only thing I did of note has been download a Steam game, which required the U-Play from Ubisoft. I installed the game and U-Play, so the game went very well. Then I played another game of steam which does not need U-Play, then attempts to transfer files on a USB key.

Steps taken to solve the problem:

When you try to transfer files, warning "the disk is write protected" appears. I thought that it odd, as I had never met this caveat on this PC before. I discovered that all the files in the C drive have been suddenly write protected. My attempts to solve this problem include:

    • Deactivation of 'Read only' file level and folder settings. The settings app doesn't seem to be a problem, but the moving folder gave the warning and she returned to "read only".
    • What allows all permissions for the users and system Admins for drive C properties > Security (I found it odd that users have all permissions, when I clearly remember all the usual permissions enabled previously)
    • Reboot/boot scan running for drive C to properties error checking > tools > error checking, which reported no error.
    • Opened as administrator command prompt and entering 'diskpart', 'list volume', "select volume #', disk clear readonly attribute, readonly attributes volume clear." The clear drive has reported a failure, while the clear volume reported a success.

None of these steps have managed to solve the question of write protection. Might this problem be possibly related to the downloaded game, or the program U-Play from Ubisoft? Is there something that I missed? What can I do else? I have documents and files that have not been backed up, but I don't want to lose.

Thank you for reading, any help would be appreciated!

I'm really sorry for your time. The culprit is revealed to be the key USB is write-protected, not the drive internal (phew!). I guess I panicked a bit and don't think to test with another stick of memory, which transferred files very well. Problem solved, I'll just reformat the wobbly flash drive.

Thank you for sticking with it, even when I probably don't have too much sense, you have been very helpful and patient.

With the indicator largeaddressaware under your 64 bit OS, it is possible for FS9 to use up to 4 GB of address space.
Get the SBB Explorer (http://ntcore.com/exsuite.php) open fs9.exe, header to open the file then click on 'Click here' and mark "App can handle > 2 GB addresset", save and close fs9.exe.

Hi Wally, the hard disk OS X and all of your files. Get a case for your reader, and it backs up. Try OWC

Always keep your Mac backed up on an external drive with Time Machine or utility of cloning like SuperDuperor double clone.

    Try eBay for the adapter.

  • How to free space on the hard drive?

Hello, in my "On Mac" section, it says I 233 MB of space on my 121 GB of Flash storage. Previously, I thought it was video files, but it was buggy mac section. I refreshed, hoping he would show me how much space I had left, but he stayed the same. That is the problem. I use my macbook for College written work and - maximum - work on Adobe Creative Suite. When I work on these I use a separate USB key due to the size of the files.

The only files I have actively created/downloaded on my macbook are the files in the files of my 'Documents', 'Pictures' and 'Applications '. When I use "Get Info" on each, I see that my photo folder is great, My Documents folder is large 1.17 GB and my Applications folder is large 14,68 GB 889,9 MB. These are the only files that I use and backup the files needed for my Macbook running and working properly, the only files I want to keep.

My question is, basically, if there is a way to lose all the files on my hard drive that are not necessary to keep. I'm not too good when it comes to computers, so I don't want to not just randomly start deleting things. Just to get these road, my garbage can is completely empty and I have nothing in my downloads folder. I have also no large files to film and, when I searched my Macintosh HD for files larger than 500 MB, there is no evidence, so I guess that this is caused by a large amount of small files (I tried to restrict research naturally but then come files that I wasn't sure of what they have done and therefore have not removed the still). If it helps, my about Mac filed 100,64 GB of my free space as 'other '. But I know that is not how much space was taken when I got the Macbook earlier this year and it should not be the size of the files that comes with it by default. There is also a way to restore all the files on my macbook at their stage of default, that I would also be interested, especially if there is a way to do it without rid of files I already have.

I guess that's a very basic question, can someone help out me?

    1. never remove all the files that you do not understand the purpose. If you do, it's like opening the hood of your car and take bits out of the engine ebcause you think they are not necessary.

    2. it seems more likely that you must rebuild your Spotlight index.

    See the following page:

  • I NEED FREE SPACE ON MY HARD DRIVE?

If I save my photos, the videos, the exet files. on my local drive (c :)) and the Save to hard drive (d) then I delete the files, photos, videos, exet.) (c) hard drive to free up more space?

First of all you need to know if your D: drive is a recovery disk. If this is the case, you are NOT, don't tell ANYONE, supposed to touch.
Recovery disk stores the image of your system. It is used to restore your computer when it crashes.

As to need more spcae of disk in drive c:, you already have " Disk Cleanup "?
You should do cleaning disc on a regular basis in order to recover disk space.
Here's the tutorial for disk cleanup. (Assuming you are using Vista)
    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/76073-disk-cleanup.html

The tutorial consists of 2 parts.
The first part, from #1 to #11 is temp to delete files, cookies etc etc. It will give you in disk space.
The second part of #12 at the end is to remove all except the most recent restore points. This will give bring you a ton of disk space.
Regularly cleaning disc and you will not question due to lack of disk space. For the benefits of others looking for answers, please mark as answer suggestion if it solves your problem.

  • Free space available on hard drive

Recently, I noticed that my new MacBook Pro has been low on available storage space.  It has a drive 250 GB of merger with a score of 75Gb for Windows.  When I looked at the drive in disk utility, I found a free extra partition of 58 labeled GBs 'space '.  I have no idea how the extra partition came to be.

I tried to delete the partition with no luck.  I get this error message:

How can I delete the 'Free space' partition and add space on the Macintosh HD partition?  In addition, the partition "Untitled" is Windows on Bootcamp.

Just a little more information, I tried to make the road together a partition via Boot Camp.  Even through Boot Camp the total size that the reader would be after the removal of Windows using Boot Camp still wouldn't understand not what is shown as a Partition 'free space '.

  • I ran out of free space on the hard drive how can I free up space

My pc is freezing or locking up when I run a desktop wallpaper animated, so I defragment a saw that I was up to 20% freespace

You can create more free space in C in carrying one of the measures suggested below.

The default allocation for the restoration of the system is 12% on your C partition is more generous. I have them would be reduced by 700 MB. Make my computer right click on your icon, and select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select settings but this time find the slider and drag it to the left until it shows 700 MB and output. When you get to the settings screen, click on apply and OK and leave.

A flaw that might be useless which is for temporary internet files, especially if you keep no copies on the disk offline. Setting the default value is 3% of the walk. Depending on your attitude to copies offline, you could bring it to 1% or 2%. In Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options, general, temporary Internet files, settings to make the change. At the same time, look at the number of days, the story stands.

The default allocation for the basket is 10% of the disk. Change to 5%, which should be enough. In Windows Explorer hover over your Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the slider from 10% to 5%. However, try to let you become so complete that if it is complete and you delete a file by mistake it will bypass the Recycle Bin and have gone forever.

If your drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows directory of your C partition you will some uninstall files in your Windows folder in general: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$ etc. These files can be compressed or not compressed. If compressed text the name of the folder appears in blue. If these files are not compressed you can compress. Right-click on each folder and select Properties, general, advanced, and check the box before you compress contents to save disk space. On the general tab, you can see the winning amount by deducting the size on disk size. File compression is only an option on an NTFS formatted disk partition / partition.

Select Start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, cleaning disk to emptying your trash, delete temporary Internet files and other selected options. I recommend also you click Other Options, System Restore and delete all but the last system restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Using the system restore option is most appropriate when your system is slow and you need to increase the free disk space on your C partition. If you have errors that could be solved by using the system restore to your system settings back to before the error occurred initially do not use this option.

If more than one person uses the computer and they have their own user log you need to run Disk Cleanup in each user profile that you want to delete all the unwanted files.

A better program of disk cleanup is cCleaner. Delete System Restore points may be important if you have little free disk space. The ability to delete them is one of the tools options. You can selectively remove those created in less important moments.

cCleaner comes with a registry tool. Do not use this tool as any registry cleaner could lead to the creation of very difficult to resolve system errors.

  • Why is the free space on my hard drive that is grossly exaggerated amoumt?

    An external hard drive

If you have posted all the files in the Recycle Bin, the rest is probably shadow copy Volume. WIndows holds 15% of the volume for this.

You can check the amount of space used with the VSSADMIN command.

Open a command prompt by clicking on start > all programs > Accessories and right click on command prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

    Type the following command

    vssadmin list shadowstorage

  • How to free space on the hard drive recovery disk?

My J: drive (recovery) is near capacity after a reinstall of Windows 7. How to clear space on this drive?

    Hi John R H,

The purpose of the training of recovery is to store all the files needed to do disaster recovery, when the system becomes unstable. The recovery disk is actually a partition on the hard drive of your computer - not a real physical disk. There is much less space than other drives. If you use the recovery disk to store files (such as backup files), the reader is full quickly and can cause serious problems when you need to use the system recovery.
Note: Do not store files on the recovery drive. The only files on the recovery disk should be linked to a system recovery.
