  With LR3, I often use manual image transformations and observe an undesirable effect, that I just can't explain to myself: when changing the vertical Perspective to a negative value, the image will be transformed to deal with the prospect, as expected, but its Summit will be moved out of sight as well.   I don't think it's a bug. The scale is supposed to evolve, after all. If you sclae to 84%, the image should scale down.

  I think that it is, is a lack of two additional sliders: Pan horizontally and vertically Pan. If you have these, you could move down to step 2, instead of scaling the image to retrieve the hidden parts.

  Here's a way

  Make sure that your image is a square, with the chain focused on the image on a separate layer, with a layer of background white. On the layer of the string, filter > distortion > polar coordinates, using 'Polar to rectangular. Use the free transform to scale the height of the layer. Note that the vertical position will affect the overall size of the final result, so it would be a good idea to put a horizontal guide along where you want the final diameter to be identical to the original (I used the outer edge).

  Once the image turns deformation > polar coordinates again, but this time use "rectangular to polar. You will notice that the string layer is now a ring, surrounded by transparency, transparency at the center point. This is why you add a white background.
