  What is this error message that you receive? This would help a lot. From there, a person must be able to provide some additional troubleshooting steps.

  -Are you referring to Windows Update with Internet Explorer 9 update several times even if it has been installed?

  Thank you very much for your answers. As you suggest, I went to the help/updates and found that 3 points were scored update, Manager, 13 Photoshop and first elements 13 elements. On a hunch, instead uncheck one of them, I thought I'd see what would happen to let update all 3. It took a while, but, long story short, stopped the happy Vangogh and everything seems fine.   This machine can run the latest version of Mac OS X (10.11). You cannot update directly from 10.5, however. If you have already upgraded to Snow Leopard and have used the software update to get updated (10.6.8), then you should be able to install El Capitan from the Mac App store if you have enough disk space.

  It would be wise to upgrade the RAM of your machine before attempting it, however, that 2 GB is barely enough to run the OS, never mind all the applications.

  This machine can be maxed out at 8 GB of RAM.

  If you load the editor, when you get told updates and you click Update, it may take a while to get there.

  If you are on a Windows system, you can find that there is a flashing icon of user access control in your taskbar. I don't know about MAC systems.

  What version do you have now? You can use iPhoto 11 v9.6.1 on El Capitan. If you have a version earlier than iPhoto 11 then there is no way to upgrade and you must use the new Photos.app instead.

  If you have a version of iPhoto 11 then put it in the trash (not empty it) and reinstall it from the shopping list of the Mac App Store - note it is the Mac App Store and nothing to do with iTUnes.
