Great migrations: move from vCenter 5.1 on Windows 2008R2/SQL 2008 5.1 or 5.5 on 2012 2012 Windows/SQL

In anticipation of the end of mainstream support for Windows Server 2008 R2, I want to migrate an installation vCenter to a whole new server and MS SQL Server.

It is a virtual machine running in my host cluster. There Server vCenter Update Manager, Converter Standalone and some services not VMware that I can handle it myself. ADAM is installed as part of the vCenter Server requirements, and it is also attached to an AD domain where I use AD, single sign - on.

The host cluster is four 5.1 ESXi hosts that are up to date, and helped HA and DRS. They use also switches distributed to all of their network connectivity, including vMotion, management, fault tolerance (although I do not use FT) and virtual machines.

I did upgrades on-site to vCenter before and I replaced SQL Express with SQL Standard on the same server, but I did not move before vCenter. I'd make some drastic measures, as I understand:

* Complete backups (of course) of SQL in the server itself, ADAM

Installation of a new server operating system and SQL 2012

Withdrawal of databases and reinstall them on the new server

* Restoration of ADAM on the new server

Installation vCenter, Update Manager, etc.

* Hoping the host cluster is mounted on the new server, and nothing breaks

I'm not all that worried about maintaining statistics, so maybe it is possible to install a new server vCenter Server and simply move the host cluster from the old server to the new. I moved one vCenter to another host, but that was before I put in place of distributed switching.

I found this on a related post:

Migration in a new vCenter VMware environment. IT diversifies

This manual seems to echo what I've read so far, I had to disassemble the distributed switches until I can migrate any host to a new server vCenter. Yuck. Well, I've migrated from the standard to the switches distributed without downtime before, so I can do the opposite.

    Hello

It's always a good idea to have a paper copy of a disc (for resettlement and repairs).

And Yes, backup all your data as 'can' happen during an upgrade that is supposed to be easy.

This is a very good guide for what you want to do:

Make sure you go from Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 32 bit to be able to do an upgrade.

«How To Upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 Edition Home Premium»

    http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/6892/how-to-perform-an-upgrade-from-Vista-to-Windows-7/

    And follow these steps first:

Go to the HP website and see if Windows 7 drivers are available for your make and model computer / laptop.

    http://WWW8.HP.com/us/en/support-drivers.html

If this is not available, Windows 7 will not properly work for you.

Run the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

  • Confirm the Migration process from vCenter

I need the extra eyes to look at a process of migration, we are looking at the company.  Here's the situation:

    Former environment:

5 ESX host running connected to vCenter 5.1 5.1

    ~ 170 virtual machines running

    EqualLogic SAN

A host connected to the new Bay storage Compellent

    Gigabit network

    New environment:

2 ESX host running connected to vCenter 5.5 5.5 (new forum)

    Compellent SAN

    10 gigabit network

We want to forward the new virtual machines in the old environment without a reboot of the VMS if possible.  The process proposed by our implementation partner is to:

1 vMotion the VMs on the old host which is connected to HDS

2 storage vMotion to Compellent disk

    3. turn off the VMs system

    4. remove the virtual machines of the old vCenter inventory

    5. Add the virtual machines on the new vCenter inventory

    6. turn on the virtual machines on the use of one of the two new hosts

We have been brainstorming (dangerous!) today and wondered about this process:

1 vMotion virtual machines to a former host with connectivity Compellent

    2. Add the old host to the new vCenter (causing it to unplug the old vCenter)

3 vMotion virtual machines from the old host to one of the hosts again in the new vCenter

This seems to be a no to the approach of the time.  Given that the servers all run on the host computer while the host moves between vCenters, only real exposure that I see is the period between vCenters, there is no other host to pick up the virtual machines if something failed.  The servers are all processors from Intel and of a similar age, so I don't think CVS will be a problem.  That we can restart while we deem necessary to level of VMware Tools and virtual hardware.  Can someone dig holes into the present, or tell me that we are on the right track?

Yes, absolutely, you can do these operations without interruption.

If you do this by using the user interface (VI client or Web client)

    1. first vMotion virtual machines other 4 former host of a former host where the Bay storage compellent access available.

-Make sure you of course old host with access compellent has enough CPU/memory so that all ON VMs can be placed.

-Also make sure that all former host shared except compellent storage Bay (which is available on the single old host), I think there is already.

    2. now storage vMotion all virtual machines to the old host compeleent storage array.

-This can be done using script or manually

    3. remove the old host (with compellent) from old server vCenter.

4 create a cluster on new vCenter 5.5 and add that all welcome (old 1 + 2 new) to regroup.

    5. turn on the DRS in fully automatic mode with aggressive threshold. and make sure that vMotion network is correctly configured.

    6. turn the old host in maintenance mode. DRS automatically leave the old host and balance the load on other host new facilities.

    7. wait that all vMotion operation to complete, former host wud be now in maintenance mode.

    8. remove the old host in the cluster and out of MM and remove vCenter again.

    Note:

-You can configure VMware HA/FT on the cluster to avoid any possible failure (make sure that you approve the requirement HA/FT)

-If possible, explore XVMotion, which helps move VM even there is no shared data store.

-If you want to use the script to vMotion/SVMOtion, get back to me.

-Let me know if you have any doubt

Please allow the points if it is useful.

  • Move from vCenter physical VM?

    Hi all

Currently have vCenter running in a virtual machine, but I would like to move to an existing physical host.

    Is this possible?

Otherwise, it is also possible to have a different vCenter server so that if something happens to my VM version, I have vCenter install running on a physical host as well?

    Thank you

    Take a look at this - kb.vmware.com/kb/5850444.

If you are not running vCenter 4.1 do not forget that there is a 64 bit OS.

You can also use HA in order to protect a vCenter VM or the fault tolerance, if you are fired for this.

I searched through default settings, account information, etc. anything. I believe that under XP, you could choose an account or another.

OE has the option of identities, Winmail opener does not work. Unless you have separate Windows logons, you use the same instance of WinMail and share the same Inbox, unless you create another and divert the mail with message rules. The only "switch" you have at the moment is when you compose a new message, there is an arrow down to the right of the field to choose the account, the message will be.

  • Migration path from 32-bit vCenter Server 4.0 to 64 - bit vCenter Server 4.1?

I'm having a hard time coming up with a migration path that will get me to my existing vCenter Server 4.0 (Windows 2003 32-bit), to vCenter Server 4.1, what I understand is 64-bit only.

My current vCenter runs in a guest on a 64-bit hardware, so from a point of view of "hardware", I have no problem.   But I can't get Windows 2003 32 - but to 2008 R2 64 bit in place.  I could build a new server, but I am at a loss on how to migrate from my old server vCenter function to the new.  Several instructions simply said to import and export the sql database - which I am not convinced that I can do without explicit instruction (no mssql expers here).

I hope that there is a simpler way.  Maybe if I could set up a new 64-bit server, bind them, leave it to move data across and decomission one 32-bit?  (I don't know if the vCenter Server linking works this way).

Any suggestions, or paths of existing documented migration that could help me?  I'm a little confused as to how to address the issue.

    Thank you

    -Ken

The important question is where you vCenter data stored? Using SQL Express, a local SQL Server or a remote SQL Server? All information related to your vCenter environment is stored in the database - so if you build a new vCenter server all you need to do is the Connector ODBC to point to the existing database and when you install vCenter 4.1 the data base will be get upgraded.

  • Migrate from vCenter Server again HW with Cisco 1000v in environment

I have a cluster 13 hosts ESXi 4.1 using a cisco 1kv currently and you want to move the vcenter server to a new host.  I anticipate using the same database as the existing host and IP.  Having the 1kv cisco in the environment will prevent simply connecting me the new instance of an existing database (after powering down the first instance) or it will create no additional steps in the process?

As long as you manage the server vCenter and db, you should be fine.  You will encounter problems if you change these, like the 1KV, is ultimately always a dvSwitch, associated with the server vcenter himself.  Thus, while you plan to move to new hardware, your vCenter is still considered to be the old vcenter, otherwise, you will encounter problems.

    Hope that makes sense.

  • Move the vCenter to another cluster... How?

We rotate the camera 5.5.0 vcenter and need to move from a cluster with ESX 4.1.0 hosts in a cluster hosts ESXi 5.5.0.  Two clusters are in the same data center, but no space for common storage.

We have migrated all the old cluster to the new VM using vMotion.  It is now time for the vCenter himself.

How should I go about this?  Some downtime for vCenter is probably inevitable.

    Thank you... Lyle

With the help of Support, here's what I did:

-a clone of the vCenter VM for the cluster target & storage, but do not start the new virtual machine

-change the properties for the new virtual machine so its MAC address is the same as the old VM

-stop vCenter with its interface web admin

-with vSphere client connected to the source host, stop the guest OS (suse) of the former VM

-with customer vSpere connected to the destination host, turning on the new virtual machine

Thanks to all for the comments... Lyle

You can connect otherwise?  USB or FireWire or love at first sight?  You can connect both machines and start the one you want to transfer to target disk mode.  If your other machine is up and running with an account on it and you just want to move files, you can simply drag and drop the FRO the machine mounted TDM, or you can use the migration wizard.

Or, if the other machine still starts and runs, you can start both computers and connect to the same wifi network and share the hard drive like machines on the network.  Access them in the finder on the new machine files and drag-and - drop, or use the wizard migration, on wifi.

I move from a Windows XP computer to a Windows 7 computer. My old computer has Outlook Express. I've migrated successfully my emails and messages archived in Thunderbird on the new computer. I also migrated the Outlook Express address book using an external hard drive, but I was not able to understand how to find the Outlook Express address book in Thunderbird. The only way that I could find the Outlook Express address book, is to go to 'tools' and 'import' and then import the Outlook Express address book. When I do this, the Outlook Express address book features, duplicate entries (because I imported twice now). When the Outlook Express address book shows, it works without problems and I can use it to send emails. But once I close the Outlook Express address book, I can't find him. Other messages, I see that the "Address book" tab in Thunderbird should open a window containing a list of available on the left side address books. But this window in my computer does not display a list of address books. There is just a blank window for the address book personal (it has no contacts inside) and there is nothing on the left side.

  • install Oracle 12 c and migrate data from 9i to 12 c on Solaris

HI: this is a primary control to check IAM step by step.  I need to migrate the server Oracle 9i (Solaris) to 12 c (Solaris) to the customer request. I have the instruction of installation YES from the team, the draft plan is:

    1. install Oracle 12 c binary on Solaris Server

    2 exp/imp, method to move data to 12 c 9i.

Should I create a database "empty" by script until I use the exp/imp method to migrate data from 9i?  Or, is it better to use the option 'create the single database instance' in YES during the installation of 12 c, then exp/imp?  How about the "plug-in database" or the "CBD/PDB' concept to 12 c?  It's still new and I am not master familiar with it, that I have to use all "CBD/PDB' 12 c or not?

Any problem that I need to know?

    Thank you very much!

You have your point of disagreement, but it is the best approach of guys Upgrade Oracle, google for Mike Dietrich blogs on updates. And your concern that make upgrades does not allow you to practice, well, you could easily make a few tests on my upgrade on a test environment, I really don't agree with your point here...

Sorry - but I agree with the ground.

Anyone who still uses 9i has some questions SERIOUS architecture dealing with totally outside the DB and data. There is just too much features auxiliary available (e.g., ASM, GRID, EM) which did NOT exist in 9i or substantially changed.

It is also a non-starter, IMHO, not to recommend as an upgrade to 11g without even knowing the 9i version that uses OP. A direct upgrade to 11g is NOT possible since the first versions of 9i. So if such a version uses OP they couldn't make a direct upgrade anyway. They will need first to upgrade to the last version 9i and then level it to 11g. Then, they should adapt to 12 c.

Then you must take account of the need for BACKUP:

    1. PRIOR to starting to do something

    2. AFTER the upgrade to 9.2.04

    3. AFTER the upgrade to 11 g

    4. AFTER the upgrade to 12 c

Compare that to the approach of that ground is recommended to use export/import. There is NO need to save the source DB at all since the process will NOT change. Simply a backup after upgrading to 12 c.

  • Is it really possible to move from a Treo 650 to a Treo 750?

I'm not a very happy customer right now, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I upgraded from my old Palm Tungsten to a Zire and then to a Cingular Treo 650, combining three devices in one. I have since discovered that the Treo 650 seems to have a defective transmission mode, as I rarely can be clearly understood by whom it is I give the floor. Am at the second (or third, I've lost track) and continue to have the same problem. I get five bars of reception, but cannot be understood at the other end. A little problem when trying to call 911. I am constantly told I'm "breaking." The repair shop said that it "cannot reproduce the problem. OK, so I don't want to give up all the info I stored in the crazy thing, and the 750 seems to have a different system, so I thought I would try it. All the stuff I could find seem to indicate that it would not be a problem to upgrade. When the 750 arrived, I tried to install the software from the CD on my Windows XP computer. No dice. The Setup program encounters an error and closes. Can not even look at the files, because the Installer tries to run at any time access to the Conference on disarmament. Of any player.  Given my girlfiend to check on his computer, and the CD seems to work very well. Other CD works fine on my computer. Must be some sort of conflict, but what? Tried calling AT & T number that suggested that they could help with the installation and was first connected to the business center, they me routed to the center of the laptop, which I routed to the center of the network, who said that they would have to bring in the Palm customer service and connected me to a Mac guy who poured me a menu that took me to someone for whom English is a second language with which I tried to communicate via a very poor satellite connection. They didn't make any sense anyway. by saying first that I couldn't have two desktops running (badly, that my girlfriend has my old Zire and the CD worked fine) and then insisting on the fact that the serial number of my camera had start with a P, when clearly there is no any alpha characters in there. Without this way of help. Managed to get the new ActiveSync installed from my friends on the network computer. Large. Now let's get my 650 sync with Outlook (which I've not used at home) and see if we can move. Nope. First of all, I have to update Outlook 2000, the old Win98 to my current XP. Find the old CD and puts away. OK, now synchronize with Outlook. Nope. The synchronization program gives an error, saying: it will only be able to be synchronized with Outlook 98, 2000 and XP (2002). Good grief. I have Outlook 2000, and the software does apparently not. If the Palm does not work, there is no reason for me to keep this phone and I'm very close to return and abandoning the Palm completely when I switch to something that works, even if I'm afraid to enter all this information.

Thanks for the comments. Today, I installed Office 2007 Enterprise version I bought earlier, but had not yet installed. Microsoft has presented some difficulties, but they have been quickly resolved. I then downloaded the proper conduct of Palm and synchronized the 650 with the handheld crushing the computer. Then used Destop Active to synchronize the 750. Convinced that I had moved as much information as possible, I called AT & T and move the phone number to the new Treo.

Bonus! When the guy at AT & T called me on the new phone to check it out, he said that it sounded better my phone fixed.

Sorry for continuous paragraph. When it is late, I tend to write like I think.
