grouping and segragating groups of virtual machines

I have a four-node cluster.  I have a set of virtual machines, say a1, a2, a3 and another set b1, b2, b3.

I want to keep a1, a2, a3, together on a host and b1, b2, b3 on another game.  Is there an easy way to do that without having to create 5 rules for each virtual machine?

I think it will work, but keep in mind the operational complexity, that this facility will create.

  • Dashboard for a group of virtual machines

    I want to create dashboards customized for groups of virtual machines.  These virtual machines will generally be a grouping of servers to make a request.

    For example lets say I have 6 Web servers that make up Webapp1.   and I want a dashboard that shows me the metrics of just these 6 servers.

    What is the best way to do it?  In general, we organize the virtual machine in files that represent the application.

    The dashboard would be your typical metric memory, cpu, storage (load) CPU Ready ect.

    Probably, there are two ways to go about it, here, my preferred approach is to use a service.

    A Service is a logical grouping of components in Foglight.

    When you build a service, you can specify which domain, it is a part of.

    In this example, I create a gtest service

    Specify that it is a part of the domain of vmware

    and then add virtual machines

    It looks like this

    Then I can just look at virtual machines in the service of the dashobard of the virtual environment by selecting the gtest service

    If I want, I can also create a dashboard and drag the getServiceVMs to the main view

    In the tree on the right data access to all categories of services and search service.

    Drag the getServiceVMs to the dashboard feature

    and select a model that works for me (as the summary lite)

    Or create a table with the right information (similar to this)

    The result will look like this

    Hope this helps

  • Cannot convert a virtual machine while it is powere on or suspended. Shut down and power off the virtual machine before the conversion.

    Hi all

    I am currently using preinstalled VMware 7.1 and I try to import a virtual machine, I used to work on my windows XP. Recently, I am using windows VISTA and I am trying to import my VM (.vmx) and I get this error "cannot convert a virtual machine, although it is powere on or suspended. "Shut down and power off the virtual machine before the conversion.

    This virtual machine worked very well under windows XP and VMware 6.5, but now I am not able to import it. Please suggest how I can make this virtual machine running in my VISTA and vmware 7.1.

    I am also attaching the converter file logs and .vmx vmware.

  • Power and turn off the virtual machine

    I write some scripts to turn off a virtual computer and power on the virtual machine.  Can someone please tell me what commands that I use to power on a virtual machine and a virtual computer power off, if this is possible.

    Thank you

    Depends on if you have the VMware tools running.

    (1) without tools

    Get-VM  | Stop-VM

    (2) with tools

    Get-VM  | Shutdown-VMGuest

    The 2nd method let the OS do stop.

    The first method is the power Cup.

    For power on you can use

    Get-VM  | Start-VM

    It's important I

    Hello

    You can try something like this...

    In vSphere client, choose display of virtual machines and templates.

    From there create a folder unless you already have one and move the virtual machines in question in this case. (you can also select a host, it must not be a folder).

    In the upper pane, select the virtual machines when you have selected the folder, or the host. You can select more than one virtual machine and right-click-> comments-> installation/upgrade to update VMware tools.

    I hope this helps.

  • vCenter roles and privileges to migrate virtual machines

    I created a custom role named 'Build VMs' that I have assigned to an ad group.  This role is assigned in the data centers, all spread and no. folder where elsewhere.  The role was designed to allow a specific group of users to manage virtual machines (create, move, delete, but not clone, etc.).

  • Match each data store its Lun ID and the list of virtual machines in each data store

    Hello

    Can anyone help? I'm looking to create a report that will show each Monday name and store data to data warehouses, the list virtual machines belonging to the storage of data and the name of the VCenter at the top of the report. I tried several combinations but was more difficult to get the Monday. Any help appreciated gratefully.

    Thank you

    If you use only LUNS is an easy way to get the canonical name:

    Get-datastore. {Select-Object Name,@{Name="CanonicalName"; expression = {$_.extensiondata.info.vmfs.extent.diskname}}

    I don't understand your requirement regarding the name vCenter, but for everything else

    Get-datastore. foreach {($MyDatastore = $_)} | Get - vm | Select-Object @{Name="Datastore";expression={$MyDatastore}},@{Name="CanonicalName";expression={$MyDatastore.extensiondata.info.vmfs.extent.diskname}},Name

  • Retrieve the tasks and events for a Virtual Machine

    Hello everyone.

    This question may seem trivial to some people here, but I cannot make it work: I would like to use VCO to retrieve the tasks and events for a specific virtual machine (IN parameter). Can someone help me to do?

    Best regards

    As I said, it must create a collector by using the createCollectorForTasks method in VcTaskManager.

    The parameter of this method is an instance of VcTaskFilterSpec, in which specify you the object to filter (in your case, the reference entity VM)

    You will get a VcTaskHistoryCollector which can only be traversed by using the methods readNextTasks and readPreviousTasks.

    // Get TaskManager service
    var sdktm = vm.sdkConnection.taskManager;

    // Create FilterSpec containing vm reference to filter
    var filter = new VcTaskFilterSpec();
    var spec = new VcTaskFilterSpecByEntity();
    spec.entity = vm.reference;
    spec.recursion = VcTaskFilterSpecRecursionOption.self;
    filter.entity = spec;

    // Create collector
    var collector = sdktm.createCollectorForTasks(filter);
    collector.resetCollector();

    // Browse all pages returned by collector (10 entries per page)
    var taskPage;
    while ((taskPage = collector.readPreviousTasks(10)) != null)
    {
        for each (var task in taskPage)
        {
            System.log("Task: " + task.name + " -> " + task.startTime);
        }
    }

  • Advantages and disadvantages of the use of the same network card to the network management and production (all my virtual machines) VLAN?

    Hello

    I have an ESXi. The management network and the virtual machines vlan through the same network adapter.

    What the disadvantages are to do?

    Can you help me please?

    Thank you in advance,

    Kind regards

    Garish

    Well well, in this case. This is a perfect case of SPOF, try to reach NIC teaming to avoid this.

    At least two cards physical network is necessary in your hardware ESXi host to do.

    Download an official guide of VMware Networking from the following URL, it has got everything you need and much more.

  • Difference between tasks and events in a virtual machine

    Hello

    I wonder if someone can help me. I am trying to identify when and how the as many times a virtual machine has been migrated manually by a user. The task of the virtual machine in question pane indicates that a task 'Migrate virtual machine' took place 31, but I don't see any event corresponding to this day here. If I click on related events, it comes up indicating that a migration has occurred. If I look at the events tab, then I see that there is a 18-type event "Migrate virtual machine" However there is no corresponding task. There is no event HA and DRS is disabled.

    My question is, that we should I think or is it a combination of the two? Only a manual migration by an administrator would be able to move the machine.

    Thank you

    Dan

    In the web client, the tasks are empty, but events are there.

    I have query to the database of vmware to bring to the event log and the get the DRS and migration events.

    The query has been

    Select EVENT_ID EVENT_TYPE, CREATE_TIME, username, VM_ID, VM_NAME, HOST_ID and HOST_NAME.

    COMPUTERESOURCE_ID, COMPUTERESOURCE_TYPE, COMPUTERESOURCE_NAME from VPX_EVENT where the EVENT_TYPE like '% VmMigrated %' and VM_NAME as ''.

    order of CREATE_TIME

    Thanks for your help.

  • VMX and newspapers for the Virtual Machine

    Hi guys

    I had a virtual machine that is running but view vcenter is inaccessible

    INS.png

    take a look at the data store that I see the Virtual Machine lack .vmx file and saves the files, so I already schedule maintenance for my client windows, but I just want to be sure about:

    -Stop VM

    -Remove the inventory

    -create a new virtual machine and add the existing virtual drive

    -Power on VM, everything should be good

    vmxmiss.png

    Basically follow this KB

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1002294

    Or should I be worried about the consistency of VMDK?

    Thank you very much

    > Or should I be worried about the consistency of VMDK?

    Less consistency, but more info on missing hard of header/descriptor files! It seems that someone tried to delete files of the virtual machine from the store data, but because of the locks on files that only some files have been deleted. According to the used backup application, you may be able to recover the missing files in the backup. If not, you can for example follow VMware KB: Re-create a missing virtual machine disk descriptor file, or create a new virtual machine in a laboratory environment (with the same disc size, configuration and the name) and allows to download the .vmx and hard descriptor WinSCP example files. If you have enough disk space in the lab, creating thin configured virtual disks and then change the file descriptor (remove ddb.thinProvisioned = '1')
