Guide of vSphere 6.0 of hardening - what happened?
Hello
I use the Guides of hardening for a number of years and just opened the 6.0 version of discover significant changes brewing?
The Guide is is no longer divided into tabs depending on the technology Area (ESXi, VM, vCenter, SSO etc.) but they are all in a list. It's ok, but a lot are missing. There is a second document that provides additional parameters but... you pointing to the VMware Documentation. So I don't have a single document to audit my environment against...
What happened and why the approach has changed?
I'm not trying to be cynical and say VMware want to make it more difficult for you, so you buy Configuration Manager, but what makes it much, much harder it must be a tedious job.
Any comments or have I missed something?
Kind regards
Mike
The changes were blog on starting in Feb. I solicited feedback for months. Please read the articles of the blog for the "why".

vSphere host update utility &; Internet without computer
Stuck in a bit of a puzzle here, is there a way to get the updates installed through the utility 'vSphere host update' for ESXi without an Internet connection? Heck, I'll settle for any method that does not require vCenter. Before I use to download updates on a USB key and use the Infrastructure Client v2.5 (for ESXi 3.5)... which no longer be an option in the "vSphere host update utility. Comments welcome.
Have you tried vihostupdate.pl the vCLI. The example here is ESXi 3.5 but he's going to pretty much the same for 4.0 http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/esx_3i_rcli/vihostupdate.php.

Foundation 3.5 upgarde to vSphere 4 Standard
Hello
We currently have
1 x VI3 Standard Edition
1 edition of Foundation x VI3
1 x VMware vCenter Foundation
Both servers are connected to the vCenter and work on
happy, I can move comments between host offline if there is no problem. Suites
the need until I can hold money for Enterprise Edition
The two boxes have 2 x quad core cpu and 32 GB of ram with 1.9 TB of storage
VI3 Standard Edition is running of the 10 guest
VI3 Foundation Edition runs a guest
VMware vCenter Foundation works on a separate box and the vCenter
and update the direct Manager on a cluster of MSSQL database
I have the upgrade Edition Foundation VI3 option to
vSphere 4 Standard.
Questions
It is better the VI3 Foundation Edition upgrade to vSphere 4
Standard.
If I update Standard of vSphere 4 will work with the existing
VI3 Standard Edition and VMware vCenter Foundation
Also that the best way to upgrade Foundation VI3
Edition, I was think maybe move that invited VI3 Foundation Edition to
VI3 Standard Edition in mode offline, then rebuild from scratch box and sign up for
VMware vCenter Foundation and move a guest back to the new box.
Questions
Better the VI3 Foundation Edition upgrade to vSphere 4 Standard.
Its worth the upgrade to VI3 to vSphere 4.0. You will get a lot of
new features that are introduced in 4.0. Please read the version 4.0
Notes to see this new 4.0.

If I update Standard of vSphere 4 will work with the existingVI3 Standard Edition and VMware VirtualCenter Foundation
Yes, it works.
Also that the best way to upgrade VI3 FoundationEdition,.
Its a usecase upgrade. The steps to follow this upgrade scenario is clearly mentioned in the guide of vSphere upgrade article 'Upgrading of environments without the cluster hosts'.

Just installed ESXi 4.0 on my new ML150. I installed on a SATA drive connected to the motherboard of ESXi. I also have SATA 1.5 TB drives (8) connected to the E200 SmartArray as a RAID5 array.
In the vSphere Client, I can see the drive that ESXi is installed. I can also see the E200 controller. Problem is when I go to "add storage", there are no readers/LUNS listed.
Really frustrating in that ESXi is to be this difficult. I got to a point where I could give up everything and go back to the server... ;-(
Help?
A question is the size maximum LUNS ESX (i) currently takes in charge that is 2 TB - 512 b. You'll want to create smaller LUN and then after you restart ESXi you should be able to go to Configuration-storage adapters, select the P200 and see these tables.

HP G71-340US how upgrade RAM?
I have a HP G71-340US running every day more slow. It has 4 GB of RAM. How can I put him? The specifications of the product reveal 8MB while the maintenance and service guide display a maximum of 4 MB. Which is correct?
Yes, you can upgrade to 8 GB, but you must install 64 bit OS to get the full support of 8 GB, 32 bit OS only supports 4 GB... maybe you repair said that...

Hi @MikasaD1515,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're wondering how to scan a legal Document with HP Deskjet 1515. I'm happy to help you!
Depending on your printer specificationsand user guide, sweeping glass maximum size is 21.6 x 29.7 cm (8.5 x 11.7 inches). Whereas legal Documents is 21,59 x 35.56 cm (8.5 x 14 inches). This printer is designed for the digitization of paper ordinary size 8.5 x 11 only.
I hope that this information clears things up for you!

Can I use a custom with iSCSI TCP/IP stack?
We have a group of 3 guests identical at each connection to the network through 2 natachasery using 2 vmks SAN. Each vmk resides on a separate broadcast domain so they belong to separate vswitches. No link is used in accordance with the guide of vSphere.
Thus, as the title suggests, should I use a separate TCP/IP stack custom for iSCSI vmks? or leave them in the stack by default (even if it is not an option to mark the vmks as IP storage)
As long as your vmkernel iSCSI cards and their respective iSCSI targets are in the same subnet of layer 3, i.e. you are not routing iSCSI traffic (vmkX<->TargetSPX vmkY<->TargetSPY separate subnet design iSCSI does not, apply as never before the traffic is routed between networks), OR you do not want to configure static routes customized for iSCSI targets in other subnets then there is no point in using a separate TCP/IP stack.
The main point to use the new functionality of ESXi 6 with several TCP/IP stacks is to have a completely separate battery routing table. Most of the admins were not able to handle very basic layer 3 static routing with itineraries dedicated by subnet, so they assigned default gateways on several vmkernel NIC and I wondered why things broke or has never worked.
It also allows better control what interfaces to send data when you have several paths of layer 3 or subnets to communicate with, but it's largely irrelevant and already a point an integral part of an iSCSI network fine grain.

Different routes for interfaces VXLAN?
Hi guys,.
According to the NSX v2.1 Design Guide:
The need for static routing is due to the fact that ESXi support only two TCP/IP stacks:
-VXLAN: This is dedicated to the VMkernel VTEP interface traffic. A dedicated-default route 0.0.0.0/0 can then be configured on the stack for each ESXi pointing the gateway deployed on the local of ToR, and this allows to communicate with the VTEPs deployed in different subnets of Transport distance.
-By default: This battery is used for all other types of traffic (vMotion, management, storage). It is typical to use a default for purposes of management route (given that the connection to the management interface of vmk0 could be from several remote IP subnets). This means that the static routing configuration is necessary to support communication inter-sous for other types of traffic.
Sounds good, but is this special VXLAN stack added by default? Or do I need to create and configure? I configured a host with a separate management and VXLAN VMkernel interfaces. I see my traffic VXLAN hustled through the default gateway on the management network.
I use static IP pools on the direction and the VXLAN interfaces. Does anyone know how to add this route dedicated by default under the battery VXLAN?

VTEP interface is created by NSX during the preparation of the host.
You can see this step the NSX Getting Started Guide - "step 3: prepare the ESXi NSX hosts" (Getting Started Guide for vSphere NSX).
Once you have your VXLAN battery in ESXi, you can see its stack via vCenter UI (as usual).
Or if you like CLI:
. Directions:
root@Lab1_ESXi1: ~ # esxcli ip network route ipv4 list n vxlan
Interface Source network gateway subnet mask
------------ ------------- ------------ --------- ------
by default 0.0.0.0 192.168.20.1 vmk1 MANUAL
192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0 vmk1 MANUAL
. Ping
root@Lab1_ESXi1: ~ # ping ++ netstack = vxlan 192.168.20.22
PING 192.168.20.22 (192.168.20.22): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.20.22: icmp_seq = 0 ttl = 64 time = 0,616 ms

Who supports providing thin feature of report
According to the guide of vsphere storage:
"Use thin report feature, your host and storage array available must meet the following requirements:
n
ESXi version 5.0 or later.
n
Storage array has appropriate firmware that supports the storage of T10 - integration (Thin Array-based API
(Commissioning). For more information, contact your storage vendor and check the HCL list. »
I don't see this feature exhaustively listed in the HCL. Does anyone know if suppliers are supported on this yet? NetApp, EMC, others?
Thank you!
VAAI features are listed on the HCL page for the storage unit. See below for Dell Equallogic PS6000XV example:
http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/detail.php?deviceCategory=San&ProductID=10041&VCL=true
Multiple options '5.1' firmware see you on the left, expand the third and have a look at the features VAAI included. You will notice that one of them is "Thin Provisioning".
Another example is the NetApp FAS3100 series:
http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/detail.php?deviceCategory=San&ProductID=13966&VCL=true
Expand the ONTAP 8.0.2 option to see NOTTM features, again, you will see "Thin Provisioning".
Hope this helps

I got a new Dell (Intel i5-2400/3.10GHz/RAM 16GB) with Win7(x64) and I want to install the VCenter Server 5.0 for the test,
but when I install on this machine, it shows that my platform is not supported the server VCenter 5.0.
Can someone tell me how can I fix it or is it possible install vcenter 5.0 in there?
I appreciate your help!
Hello
Surely this is not a problem with hardware, Hope it's problem with OS
I can't find VMware Comptibility matrix pdf for vsphere 5.
But does not support Windows 7 (x 64) installation VCenter 4 or 4.1.
You can check this guide for vsphere 4.1 http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf
You need, choose Server OS install 5 VCenter.

VMware ESX patches vs RedHat patches
Hello world
Whenever a security problem on RedHat or additional components, our challenge of the security team to install the patch on our ESX servers. Last wishes are on OpenSSH and Sudo.
Whenever we respond that we install only VMware updates and patches on the ESX servers, like ESX are built using a "highly modified" RedHat kernel
However, it is more difficult to convince them.Y at - there somewhere an official document from VMware, saying that we MUST not install patches not provided by VMware? The best is still a document saying that VMware will not support the ESX servers on which an external patch were installed.
I searched, but as English is not my native language (I'm french), I probably did not use the correct keywords.
Thanks for your help.In the guide of vSphere hardening, the statement is never use Red Hat or 3rd party patches. Hardening guide is security - guide of best practices. http://communities.VMware.com/docs/doc-14548

What size of volume is a reference to?
In the paper "Configure maximum' vSphere"Maximum storage"article, there is a line item for the size of the Volume (below).
What exactly is that reference?
Volume size 64 to minus16K
Volume is not the same as the logical unit number. In order to exceed the size of the LUN, you must use extensions.
Hello.
What exactly is that reference?
The maximum volume size for a VMFS volume that is created from the use of the extensions with multiple LUNS. A single LUN cannot 2 TB - 512 bytes, but the volume can be much bigger by using extensions.
Good luck!
