  Thank you very much for your answers. As you suggest, I went to the help/updates and found that 3 points were scored update, Manager, 13 Photoshop and first elements 13 elements. On a hunch, instead uncheck one of them, I thought I'd see what would happen to let update all 3. It took a while, but, long story short, stopped the happy Vangogh and everything seems fine.   Although "4.1" speaker systems are very common, the ADA745 should work without problems on a new system.  I have no connection to the ADA745 info but I guess it would connect everything as you are currently connected to the old PC.  New systems PC audio supports up to 7.1 speaker (with the most common 2.1 or 5.1) systems.  There is no drivers for speakers, however, you need to define the types of speakers in the control panel (e.g. article 4.1, and if this isn't an option, try the 5.1 and see if works well).   Printed with the new PC installation worksheet should detail the audio connections and if not, there is a copy of the Dell manual loaded on your PC and it has the details on the back panel connections.

  In Vista, the sound control panel is accessible by Start/Control Panel/hardware and sound/Sound.
