Helps to know if my computer can run Windows 8.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP - 3 on a Dell computer that I remember precisely the age.  When I try to run the Upgrade Wizard of Windows 8, I get an error message saying that it is not a valid Win 32 application, and it will not work.  I was not able to find articles or messages by other people with this problem, so I'm at a loss to know how do I know if my computer can run Windows 8.  Any suggestions or ideas?

My computer has a coprocessor 2 GHz and 3 GB of RAM, among other things, it seems that I should be able to make the transition.  But, how can I do to determine if I can't run the upgrade wizard?  I even tried Googling this issue, which usually find anything and cannot find any reference to this problem.  Any help will be appreciated.

Windows Update has nothing to do with upgrading a computer. Please post future questions regarding the installation or upgrade to Win8.1 here-online http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install
