  The latest version of Eudora (Open Source Edition) was really Thunderbird with some variations and extensions. If that could not access your Eudora files, it is possible that Thunderbird is. It is possible to consider that the older versions of Eudora (who are 'real' or 'original' Eudora code) can be downloaded if you can use one of these old emails and/or perhaps export e-mails in a format as Thunderbird here. A lot of people still use these older versions of Eudora for daily email, but I would not recommend that as they are really old.

  It is not possible change the "send using the" when replying to an e-mail message.  You can change during transmission, however.

I have overcome the problem of the drafts folder by changing the destination folder in the drafts IMAP that allows me to remove both Thunderbird and Gmail at the same time, which is what I needed. However, I still do not understand why change my Gmail password should have caused the problem in the first place!
