How can I change my product key.

Hi, I had my computer fixed. Its a really old computer and the person who fixed improved many things. He even re-installed Windows XP and makes it seem smoother and faster by adding more ram. I have been using this machine for awhile now, but then when I tried to install new software to the Microsoft Update page online I received a message that says that my windows Machine is not a genuine copy of Windows XP.

I do not understand why I would get this message that I have been using this computer since 2005 with the same product key... I asked the guy who fixed my computer which key he used, and he used another key that does not match that of the sticker on my computer. Now I want to change the key to the right one and there is no setting for it.

He told me to reinstall XP with the product key on my computer, but I don't want to do that...
