  -Very well, sounds like you might have clogged or dry print head. What I propose, is that you first use the Tools menu under Setup for clean print heads at least three times. If that does not improve the quality of your print (PQ) or if you already have gift which, I would say that you remove the printhead and clean the back of the cradle with a non fluffy cloth (like a coffee filter) and a little water. The section you want to clean will be triggered copper bumps where the printer makes electrical contact with the print head.

  You use the HP ePrint home & Biz? Or you use AirPrint and/or a different application on your phone? If you use ePrint you can connect to the ePrint centre and there should be a setting for the grayscale or black and white.

  This printer does not print with missing cartridges, need individual ink cartridges (IIC), be sure to leave the cartridges and then try to go into the settings to print under file > print > printing preferences and locate the Look paper/quality tab under color/Gray scale options and see if Printers lists "Black ink only" as an option available to use. You will still need to replace the cartridges at one point because the printer uses ink in other ways besides just for printing.   Please read this post then provide some details.   What operating system? In most versions of Windows, you can set default values in the Printers folder.  Look for the setting of "Print in grayscale" and "use black ink only.

  Black ink is pigmented and is not compatible with most photo papers.  If you have selected the photographic support for a type of paper the black cartridge cannot be used.
