  Make two groups - one of your red background and one of your J.

  Select all and use make mask in the transparency palette to hit the letter on red.

  If they are checked, uncheck Clip and uncheck the Invert mask

  That all depends on your image. Basically, you need to make a selection of your subject and to create a mask that shows just that. There are so many ways to make mask, we need to see what you're working with making a good suggestions. I would look on the web to remove the origins, there are tons of tutorials.
