How can I replace Yahoo by Google as default search engine?
I have Firefox 33.1 and 8.1 of Windows and don't like NOT Yahoo. Google had boxes which remembers fave sites, and Yahoo is not. I prefer Google and that's why I stayed with Firefox. Yahoo has resumed and requires a lot of other strikes/work to get where I'm going. HELP make Yahoo go!
This addon is very simple, it was written by a Mozilla engineer and will just reset all search preferences to their default value, google. It's a quick and easy way to do what you can do that manually. It allows you to uninstall then himself.

How to set google as default search engine?
I inadvertently put default yahoo through a separate application (bittorrent) and now can't find how to reset google as default search engine
To change the default search engine or the order of the search engines in the upper search box right in Firefox, please do the following:
- Move the mouse cursor inside the search box in top right of the Firefox window and click on the arrow next to the logo of the supplier.
- If you want to select another search engine, simply choose the engine in the drop-down list.
To change the order of search engines, follow these steps:
- In the drop-down list, select Manage search engines....
- In the next window, you have all your search engines listed. To change the order, simply click on a search engine, and then select move up or move down from the buttons on the right side to change the order of search engines.

the search box (with a magnifying glass to the left of it) is completely insensitive and there is no search option in the options of the menus/screens. Assistance from the address field in the search bar appears only intermittently to perform an Internet search for key words. a solution would be greatly appreciated.
You can check if you have the XML files including Google's default search engine in the browser\searchplugins file in the Firefox program folder.
If this isn't the case, then you need to reinstall Firefox.
Try to delete the file search.json and possible search - metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the profile folder of Firefox to reset the default search engines.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder currently in use:
- Help > troubleshooting information > profile directory: see file (Linux: open the directory;) Mac: View in the Finder)
Firefox will rebuild the file search.json from the default search engines in the folder "browser\searchplugins" in the Firefox program folder and the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.

I want to use Google as my search engine, but no matter what I change the default search engine settings is still Yahoo.
I would also like to have the track back feature when I opened a new tab, it shows often used pages that I can click on and open.
First of all, thanks to dmcritchie. His solution was helpful. However, I didn't uninstall my Yahoo Toolbar because I have buttons, bookmarks, etc. that do not migrate.
For those of you, like me, who want to continue to use your Yahoo toolbar as well as the use of the Google toolbar, here's another solution:
Rather than uninstall the Yahoo toolbar just hide it. Go to the command bar, select view > toolbars > then uncheck Yahoo toolbar. (See first image)
Then...
- Open a new tab.
- Go to the address bar and type auto: config and press the Enter key.
- A warning box appears. Close the box by clicking on the button "I'll be careful, I promise". (See the second picture)
When the text comes up,
- Scroll down until you find "browser.search.defaulturl" it will be in bold. Third image, with the selection highlighted by me)
- Right click and select the first option which should be "modify", then
- Type (or copy and paste) the following:
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=
Then,.
- Scroll down until you find "keyword." URL"it will be in bold.
- Right click and select the first option which should be "modify", then
- Type (or copy and paste) the following:
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=
Finally,.
- Scroll down further until you find "yahoo.ytff.search.popup_src" again, it will be in bold.
- Right-click on the expression, and then select 'Edit'.
- Type (or copy / paste) in the following:
http://www.Google.com/search?ie=UTF-8 & oe = UTF-8 & q =
- Close the tab
And you're done.
This will allow you to keep all the buttons and bookmarks you have in your Yahoo toolbar without side effects unpleasant to have Yahoo away your research and give you the darned Search 404 error pages.
I hope this helps.
PS while you make changes to the configuration: automatic, be sure to copy the values that you are editing in a Word Pad document for later retrieval. Be clear about what "preference name" you have accessed and what 'value' you changed. " In this way, if necessary, you can always go back and everything returns to its previous state. I titled my document "Firefox AboutConfig Changes".
Good luck!

How to change Mozilla.cfg to set google as default search engine
Need help with our setting mozilla.cfg file to change the default to yahoo search engine to google.
Browser.search.defaultenginename in comments: config already has the default value of 'google', so doesn't justing adding this line of modzilla.cfg - ' pref ("browser.search.defaultenginename", "google", as its currently by default.)I noticed that if I manually change the search provider (thru the interface), then this value changes from 'default' to 'user set', which retains google as the default search engine. So how do I either set this value as 'user set' within mozilla.cfg, or use some alternative?

You can restore the change in Google Yahoo search engine in the Firefox 34.0.5 by enabling / disabling browser.search.isUS to false.

My search engine doesn't remember all the names that I type. What can I do to make it back as if it were?
Yes, it's the Google site and this entry field uses autocomplete = off, Firefox won't store form data that you enter in this field of research.
You can use the build-in on: home page as your home page that does not have this attribute.
See for a similar case with the name and password fields.
