  OK, the 8600 Officejet Pro has two pieces of glass used for copying, the glass of the main copy, and a thin (~ 1 "wide) section of glass on the left side.  If there are black lines vertical on copies or analyses both flat glass and ADF, and then the question would be caused by a defect in the sensor scanning.  The most likely hypothesis is that copies of the scanner glass flat are OK but there is a vertical line on the pages sent through the ADF.  This is caused by a small spot, perhaps as small dust on the cutting Strip.  Holding a strong flashlight on the front of the unit to the position just above the t in the logo HP Officejet Pro on the front will highlight the region.

  I understand that you do not use the black cartridge only. I find the features page and the manual for the PSC 950 but did not find that I was looking for. I would suggest trying to use the printer in mode single cartridge, but I am not sure if the printer supports this feature, that's what I was looking for.

  Try out both cartridges, then put in black only. If this does not work, the only other suggestion I have is to replace the color cartridge.

This printer is a printer AIO, therefore, you need to replace the ink cartridge when it becomes too weak to be able to resume printing. However, if you print mostly in black, you can configure a preset black only to print in black and white. This would help reduce the use of the color cartridges.

  NOTE: Composite black - for black and white images and photos, a mix of colors called 'composite black' can be used to achieve the quality significantly improved picture and soft gray tones that can be achieved with only black toner. For users who want to print images using just black toner, many HP printers color customer offer configurable options allowing the client to print using only black toner. For example, by selecting "print in grayscale" in the printer driver Specifies print using black ink only.   Here's how to adjust the color temperature:

  When you go to print a document, click on "Show details" (next, where it says PDF). Then click on 'TextEdit' and click on 'Type/quality paper.' From there, you can select the grayscale, black and white or color and toggle various levels of quality (Normal, Best project). If you use the grayscale function, you can choose just to use the black cartridge only.

  HP and other printer manufacturers have technology another printer for different needs.  For ink jet printers:

  • Some have integrated into the ink cartridges print heads.  These printers can print generally with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black cartridges (but not both) removed. 5665 envy is an example.

The Officejet 6600 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed print heads that could require the service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

  If you do ever print color laser printer would probably be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but especially black a HPI printer as those in the first category above can be a good choice.
