How do I backup files to an external drive then in safe mode on XP?

My XP went into safe mode, I bought an external hard drive to back up files before trying system restore, but XP does not recognize the drive Ext. then in safe mode.  What to do next?

First of all, good for you to realize the importance of backing up your data!

What is the brand and model of your external hard drive? Did you try another (even a USB flash drive)?

Have you tried Normal Mode? If you did, that's happened? Please be specific.
In addition, specify what you mean by "System Restore" and explain why you think it's necessary. This term can mean two things:
1. Windows XP system restore, which is best used in LIMITED situations and return to a previous configuration of the operating system and associated parameters
2. a restore or recovery, which is a method from an OEM provides to actually reinstall the operating system. It may be non-destructive, which should keep data intact or destructive files, returning the PC to its original factory condition.

In fact, I don't think that smart insights do what you ask, although they could be a solution to a different problem. Smart insights are especially useful when the external drive is not connected (that has not been mentioned in the problem statement).

In general, the workflow of moving pictures on an internal drive, changing them, and then remove the pictures back to the internal drive is unnecessary extra work that adds almost no advantage. There is such a difference in small speed based on the speed of drive when you load a photo into the development module that you may not notice, and it can be eclipsed by the time it takes to move the photo. Ian Lyons did a study and in most cases, the difference between editing photos on a hard drive internal and editing photos on an external drive was small fractions of a second.

So my advice to you is just to let the pictures on the external hard drive, no moving pictures from here to there, not too much space on your internal drive with smart insights.

I can't find my external hard drive in "computer".

It does not appear in 'Computer' under 'devices with removable storage ".

I just want to get to my files so I can copy them to my new computer.  How to access my files on the external hard drive?  Why isn't he appear in 'computer '?

    Hello ShamedMonkey,

Thank you for your message.  The problem you are having is because of differences in formatting between PC and Mac.  You can, however, transfer your files between the two.  I will set out what must be done under and limitations of each.
First, you will need to format the drive on your PC.  When you format the PC, you can format it in FAT32 or NTFS.
(You mentioned that you do not see the drive in the computer) To format drive:
Click 'Start' > right click on 'Computer' > select 'manage '.
    Click on "disk management".
In the right pane, you should see your drive > you can then do a right click and 'format '.
    FAT32:
This format will allow you to easily transfer files between the two.  This format becomes problematic when you transfer files more than 4 G.  There is a limit of 4 GB in FAT32, etc. of many movies are bigger than that and cannot be transferred using this format.
    NTFS
This format has no size limitation, however, in its normal state it will be 'Read only' on Mac.  If you will not be able to transfer all the data itself.  While doing some research on the web, it seems that you can use a program called MacFuse on your Mac to change to NTFS files.  I have not confirmed this, but you can give it a try.  If this program works as planned, it would be the way to go.
Please let us know if it did or did not solve your problem.
    See you soon

  • If you move files to an external drive in PSE 7, are these backup files when you catalog backup

My catalog is now about 50 GB and I want to decrease its size so that it takes up less space on my hard drive, and more important, so my backups and restorations do not take as long.    Files are not to be modified in the future then why keep saving them?  If I move the files on an external drive using files offline, copy/move files on the removable disk will be backup items these files as well as files on my C drive when I backup my catalog?

If not, can I move files to a new catalogue and catalogue of dangerous data (such as albums, tags, etc.)?

    Thanks for any help.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

When restore you to the original location on the destination computer, the fact that restoring average the same path where the files were on the source computer?

    Yes, the exact same path.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

I used this option once when I saved on my XP computer and restored to my Vista machine.  It took me a long time to get rid of extra files generated by Vista.

If you're moving from XP to Vista and your records are under C:\Documents and Settings\, Vista will create aliases to your user folders to maintain compatibility (since Vista has a different naming convention for the files of the user).  Vista itself will not create additional folders, but programs like the PES can be confused by having two different names for the same file.

    function() {return A.apply (null, [this] .concat ($A (arguments)))}

I now store everything (files catalog and photos) in a folder with the same name under C:\ on both computers.

As long as it is not under C:\Documents And Settings, then use the original location option to restore to the same exact path.

The option new location / Restore Original Folder Structure will preserve your folder hierarchy, but create very long paths by adding in the root files, for example \users\ellis\pictures and it is difficult for many people to collapse these unnecessarily added files.

  • Save files in an external drive.

When I start a new backup of my computer files in an external drive that already given to this topic, may lose?

When I start a new backup of my computer files in an external drive that already given to this topic, may lose?

Starting in the first time a backup file, the system will create a folder in the external hard drive of diving. Any subsequent file backup is stored in this folder.

The first backup of the time will be a full file backup. Following files will be "gradual." Which means that it only backs up new files that are absent in the last backup.

So, to answer your question: no it won't erase what are already on the disk hard ext.

  • Siri does not find the files on my external drives

    Hiya:

Just updated to Sierra of MacOS and I try to use Siri to search for files on my computer and as the title suggests, Siri spitting not files on my external drives (both connected via USB 3 on the back of the iMac). I tried to turn on Siri/off, Spotlight is not all excluded files, I tried signing in/out of my iCloud account. I tried to create a new user account on my Mac (which will not find anything). Permissions on my external hard drive seem ok: read/write is enabled for me, all the world and admin; "ignore permissions" is turned on.

I'm starting to think that this is a design limitation of the software. Someone else using Siri able to search for files on your external hard drives?

As near as I can tell, unlike the Finder and Spotlight, search Siri does not check for external drives.

  • How can I restore my backup files on an external hard drive using Windows XP SP3?

I back up my files to an external hard drive using windows XP sp2. My pc crashed and re installed with Windows XP sp3. Now I can't find the backup on the system tools utility. How can I restore my backup files. Help, please.

    Hi PML.

Yes, I used the built in «Back to the top of the tool» Unfortunately I don't have the CD. My Netbook is a HP mini computer that comes with Windows XP home. Thank you for your help and I hope to hear from you again.

How do you reinstall Windows?  If you have used the HP Recovery system to recover from a hidden partition, backup should have been reinstalled.

I suggest you call HP support.

  • How to stop Windows Update by creating temporary files on my external drives?

Any ideas on how to tell Windows Update to stay away from my external drives?

I have several external drives I use for backup projects, archives and collections of major media. They are connected to my laptop very irregularly and rarely more than a few hours. In recent years they have been inundated with folders with long as names d84fa74b9585277339 as the seams related to Windows Update. I think it has already started on the laptop with XP I had before this one. Sometimes I see these files on the internal hard disk, but there are theyalways disappear after some time. On external drives, I have to delete manually. On an NTFS disk partition I use for backup, it's not easy, sometimes I have to take ownership of the folder. Drives FAT32 / exFAT is easy.

I guess people who have developed Windows Update realized that you can not trust USB or eSATA connected drives to be there when the cleaning is executed (BTW when cleanup runs it?). So I must have screwed up a setting somewhere. And I have to be very consistent in this because the same thing happens with friends and relatives, I contributed to the installation of Windows 7...

    Cheers, Willem

    3. disconnect all external disks before you run a manual check of Windows updates.
