How many vCenter servers?

Hi all

Earlier today, we have 1 x VirtualCenter Server 2.5U4 which has 3 x wired on ESX 3.5U4 hosts, is one of our main offices.

We now install some (probably ESX 4 given his imminent release) ESX host to a second location of main office. These two places are linked by a 100 MB connection.

My question is, would it be a good or bad idea to use the existing VirtualCenter Server 2.5U4 (improved to vCenter when it comes out) to manage both of these places, or it would be better to have a vCenter dedicated for each location.

Benefits: 1 server to manage, all ESX hosts in a single console.

Cons: License required Extra vCenter, another deployment of SQL required, 2 servers to manage and connect to.

What are your opinions? Is there a reason I should use specifically not just a box of vCenter?

Thank you!

Liam

Technically speaking, it should work perfectly. And you aren't yet nearly as many hosts a vCenter may have... I would use a central system, it would make more sense indeed. Remember that you might want to increase the heart rate:

  • Migration cold - how many simultaneous servers

We have a customer moving servers from one host to another host in the same ms. We do a migration cold because there are some limitations to this customer and no SAN/storage network so all local drives on the host server. Although we can now do vMotion without storage applications SAN/network has some limitations too and client wants to move which is supported by the seller and do not go by what VMWare can support. Our question is when we make cold migration using vCenter doing this option, stop comments right click migrate host and data store servers how can we move simultaneously at once a single server at a time, or we can do more than one. Any help would be appreciated. I am less familiar with this side of vmware, so feel free to ask for more information in case if I did not understand our scenario.

How many clusters manage vCenter Server?

    can this change?

I can't found the maximum number of clusters a vCenter can handle, only the maximum number of hosts per cluster, which is 32... but altogether, you can have more than one cluster without problem.

Do a little math, since vCenter supports 1000 guests and each group can have 32 guests, maybe you can have at least 32 clusters... but not 100% on it.

  • Best practices... How many cards?

    Hey guys,.

We are currently adding 2 new hosts (HP BL460c G8) to our cluster 4 hosts (HP BL460c G7).  Guests have the following configurations:

    -12 cores (2 x Intel Xeon 6 cores)

    -192 GB memory (G8 have 256 GB)

    -NIC 6 (2 + 4 with mezzanine)

    -2 x 146 GB mirror for OS

    -2 FC HBA

I just upgraded vCenter and vSphere Update Manager to the latest version (5.1 U1).  We performed an average of 40 to 60 machines virtual host and never had a problem... CPU is always about 15 to 20 percent and memory around 50-60%.  Exchange and SQL are on physical servers.

We use 4 NICs for VM traffic (4 Active VM (with 3 network interface cards) + 2 Exchange trade VMkernel (1 + 1 standby active network card) and 2 NICs for V-Motion and FT.)

Recently asked me to see if we could remove 2 switches (Cisco 3020) between the speaker and have a viable environment with only 4 network cards.  The network guys tell me that traffic is really not so bad on 3020 s... We have occasional peaks but average traffic of the past year is generally quite low.  It comes with switches and nic 1 GB.

I was thinking about the following config if we go up to 4 network cards:

-2 active network for VM traffic maps (ideally an edge / one on the mezzanine)

-1 map of active network for vMotion / Mgt of traffic with the other network adapter (used for FT) in standby mode

-1 map of active network for FT / Mgt of traffic with the other network adapter (used for vMotion) in standby mode

Am I missing something?  To be honest... I prefer to keep the 6 switches/NIC, thinking we're going to have traffic for her in the future but the management here wants to know if it is feasible with only 4 at the moment.

    Thanks in advance.

So, you have certain requirements with forced here. The questions are to make us think, not necessarily to have a definitive answer.

Management asked if a NIC (4) configuration is possible. So, let's look at the types of traffic, assuming that the redundancy is a requirement.

    Types of required traffic:

    • MGMT (VMkernel)
    • vMotion (VMkernel)
    • VM (Virtual Machine) - y (2) NICs required for bandwidth? If so, you might consider that NIC (3) will be necessary for redundant N + 1 on a NIC level. 10GbE starts to make a lot of sense in this scenario.

    Types of traffic in option:

    • Based on your statement in this thread, FT is not used yet. What is a bond? If this isn't the case, I'd take it off the table for this decision as long as the decision to use FT affects more than the NIC number. It affects the master VM, use of resources, backup schedule, etc.

From the little information listed here, I agree with the proposed plan of NIC if 4 cards network is possible based on the investigation. (Of course many NICs gives more flexibility. 10GbE gives you more options.)

VMNIC numbers here are just placeholders.

    • MGMT (active VMNIC0 / VMNIC1 sleep)
    • vMotion (active VMNIC1 / VMNIC0 sleep)
    • VM (VMNIC2 Active / Active VMNIC3)

In addition, you had (4) hosts and you add (2). Your cluster increased only 50%. How many times do you get? Expect more work load in the next 6 to 12 months? I would say that you can certainly make the arguments for Enterprise more than license for a switching distributed alone, without forgetting the other features that you will receive.

    I hope this helps.

Don't forget to mark this "correct" answer or 'useful', if you found it useful (you'll also points).

  • How many cards network vmotion

    Hi all

We are moving from vSphere 4.1 to 5.1 vSphere.  As part of this effort, we have the ability to reconfigure a few things, including the number of network adapters, that we have for vmotion.  I know it can withstand up to 16 x 1 GB NIC.

Our server environment is not 10 GB yet, but we have a total of 12 x 1 GB NIC ports on most of our ESX (edge 4 x and 2 x 4-port cards) host with ports to save.

We create the new environment 5.1, is there a best practice around how many ports to configure for vmotion?  I expect the answer will be 'it depends', but I just wanted to get an idea of the factors that should be taken into account for this?

The number of virtual machines on each ESXi host would be a review?  (For example, when place you it in maintenance mode.)

We just need to experiment with it ourselves to see what is the right number (for us)?

Is there a minimum number, we should consider (maybe 2 or 3)?  Should we configure everything as much as we can?

    Thanks for your help...

    Hello

You have reason... it depends on

VMotion operations are very fast with vSphere, if you already have a 1 GB dedicated on each host. So if you have a downtime planned for one of your hosts, I think that it would not be a second that is necessary. 8 vmotion operations at the same time could be very well (if you have 10Gb)... but maybe is not worth if you can wait the 30 seconds more...

If you have a DRS, which uses VMotion to load balance virtual machines between hosts, perhaps a second NETWORK card would be a good idea... but once... If this configuration does not work properly with 1 NETWORK card you should see warnings now in your vCenter.

So, what best practices talk is how to provide the best possible solution to a scenario with some limitations that you should consider. Availability would be one of the things to consider and one side for availability "acquisition cost" (budget is another milestone to examine each project). As you already have multiple network interface cards, this is not a limitation and a good design could consider having a second NETWORK adapter dedicated to VMotion (two vswitches or the one with the two NIC related to it... depends on if your host has CPU contention or not... otherwise, I would recommend two vSwitches so you HA there too).

VMotion (at least for me) is not essential... First of all, I would like to confirm that you will be NIC 'extra' for the most critical traffic such as VM presentation or storage.

It of only my point of view (with some best practices of VMware on it), hope this has helped you!

    Kind regards

  • I want to know how many VM, we can assign the blade according to my requirment

    Hi all

Can it please gothrough with the configuration below and let me know how much VM, we create each blade as shown in cofiguration.

    6 blades with (4 6-Cores CPU), 256 GB of RAM = 24 cpu = 144 carrots

    ---------
    2 servers blades with (4 6-Cores CPU), 256 GB of RAM = 8 cpu = 48 cores
    2 servers blades with (2 CPU 6 hearts), 128 GB of RAM = 4 cpu = 24 hearts
    US2
    -----
    2 servers in a rack with (2 CPU 6 cores), 32 GB of RAM = 4 CPU = 24 hearts
I apriciate if you spend some time with my request.
    Kind regards
    DJ

Hi Dj, with 1 logical processor you can host up to 20 virtual machines with single processor with vsphere 4.1... What is a virtual cpu 'it's a HEC (material execution context) .. 1 physical blade, you have 24 hearts... 24 * 20 = 480 VMS but logically only 320 vms online can be hosted on an ESX Server and 512 machines offline.

There a logical scenario, but may not be practical... first try to install virtual machines with simple CPU and gradually increase the load on the server by adding more virtual machines... As the time you will come to know how many virtual machines can be supported by a single blade according to your envoirnment

You might be planning to have high IO intensive machines like file/Exchange/SQL server... In this scenario, concept of maximum rates would fail... You have possibility to during the validation and memory, for VMS (balooning), but we must avoid above engagement in production envoirnment. As there is no hard and fast rules for virtual machines, but I hope that above explanation might help you to satisfy your request.

  • How server vCenter do we need?

Sorry, I searched but can't put this all together. We have VI3 esx 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 to 3 hosts connected to an iscsi san into one building. We have operated for a few years. I believe that we have upgrade protection, so we should be able to upgrade to vsphere, but we can't really down the hosts for the upgrade until we move a few virtual machines.

We received 3 new hosts and a new iscsi san that we put in another building, and we have installed esxi 4.1 on these hosts. We intend to separate 2 groups, so that guests bldg 1 will not access the san bldg 2 and vice versa. Connections between hosts and san iscsi use 10.x addresses.

I know that I can not use virtualcenter 2.5 to the new hosts. Do we need a new copy of vcenter for new guests, or can we migrate virtualcenter from the former hosts to vcenter on new hosts and use a copy of vcenter for everything, even with the 2 separated without? Our updated copy of virtualcenter runs on a computer virtual xp on the san bldg 1. I have a copy of xp 64-bit on one of the new hosts in waiting for a copy of vcenter.

    Thanks for any help.

You should be able to deal with a Vcenter as long as the connection between building speed is decent.  We have a remote site hundreds of miles we manage a small implementation ESX on with a Vcenter here on our main site.  The connection is 10 Mbps and there is really no noticeable slowdown in the overall operation.  Of course, if we tried to migrate a virtual computer through the pipe from 10 MB to a data store on the remote site, it would take much more time, but it still works fine.

All operations, connections SAN, networking, VM files, data, etc., are the individual hosts.   Just from the Vcenter sends management commands and collects his stats, so really no matter how many sites you have as long as the communication is not expire or without.  The only reason why I could see you need multiple Vcenters would be for the number of elements, as if you had more than 1,000 virtual machines or something.

  • How many physical connections / sessions get pooled using the JMS Wrappers

    Hello

I have been reading about improved support for using WebLogic JMS with EJB and servlet and I was wondering if its possible to specify how many physical connections / sessions to a foreign JMS provider will be created? Specifically, I am using Sonic MQ are foreign provider JMS and Sonic have specified that only one connection will support up to 30 sessions before performance begins to degrade. I just want to know what means the WebLogic code "under the hood" to decide how many connections / sessions to create?

    Thanks for any help

    Mandy

Basically, a connection is created by simultaneously active thread requesting a connection. Stats of the pool are found here on the console (if my notes are correct):

Services-> e-mail->-> [Server JMS] JMS servers->-> Pools of connections monitoring

It could be Session Pools and no Pools of connections.
