  • Through host SCSI tape drive to the virtual computer with the backup software installed in the comments

    Can I attach an external SCSI tape drive to one of my hosts, and then add it as a device in a virtual machine.

    I want to use backup exec on a virtual machine, rather than having to have a separate physical server to attach the tape drive. I realize that I wouln't be able to vmotion the guest but as its only going to be a backup machine I am happy with that.

    Thanks in advance,

    Yes is possible.

    I have a Dell TL2000 with a dedicated SAS card and it works (not faster than in a real environment, but works).

    You add the SCSI ID of the tape (and the library, if any) to the virtual machine.

    Or, if your hardware can he take charge, using VMDirectPath and give the card on the virtual computer.

  • PowerEdge R415 - external SCSI tape drive?

    I was looking through the updates available for the R415 find a scsi interface card. I do not see an extra, but was hoping someone could point me to a compatible card. It is necessary to connect to scsi tape drives.

    Oly_R,

    The adapter you need is the LSI 2032. As long as found on page 9 of the R415 technical guide - http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/misc/r415_tech_guide_11_18_10_final.pdf

    The LSI2032 part number is NU947.

  • How to add space to the D: drive while extend space is dimm

    After the installation of cleaning that had become indispensable, although my computer, seams now healthy but his unit became full and forthcoming, not only with repeated messages of "Space bass", but also various errors, here and there.

    Among the choices, to increase its space, I chose to increase or remove files to D:. In doing so, I comfortably shrunk C: by 1.25 GB. But the BIG problem is that there is NO way to add this on the D: drive.

    The commands and options in disk management are therefore very obscure and non-understable that, after 10 days of fighting, I'll have to come to your aid. Please do something as you can so that I can add the space unallocated with my D: drive. Otherwise I'm in big trouble; no updates to come; No downloads are possible. I'm sitting with meaningless fight and nothing else.

    Hello

    You can't do what you want to do using the disk of Vista management.

    You can't take a little off-C: and nail it on D:

    And are you sure that D: is not your recovery Partition to reinstall the operating system.

    If it is read this:

    Your recovery Partition was photographed on your hard drive during the production of your computer by the manufacturer for all of these reasons.

    1. to reinstall Vista from in the case of a failure of the system, based on individuals or the keys at startup.

    F10 or Alt + F10 or F11 are a couple of different manufacturers use sequences.

    You will need to ask your manufacturer for proper sequence.

    2. to make the recovery disks on if your drive hard breaks down, so that you can then reinstall the operating system on a new hard drive.

    Also ask them how to make records.

    Your D: Recovery Drive is should not be used for backups, defragmented, etc..

    There are backups on an external hard drive.

    To resolve the problems that have arisen with the recovery D: Partition, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your computer to remove all that has been added to it.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

    If it is not the recovery Partition, Vista for you options to > save data on D: > D: delete > C: extend into the now unallocated space where D: is.

  • How to connect the SCSI tape drive to comments

    New user of VMWare here - I like it so far.  In any case, I have a LTO3 SCSI drive, I would like to use with one of our virtual machines running on our host ESXi 4.1.  I installed a LSI 53 c 1030 SCSI HBA, appearing on the HW compatibility list.  The drive is an HP Ultrium 920 LTO3.  I use BackupExec 12.5 x 64 on the VM (Win2K8 R2 x 64).

    I can't find clear instructions for setting this up in ESXi.  Nothing in the implementation or the Config Guide.  I'm not if I use passthrough or without passthrough, etc..  Can someone tell me the good documentation on how to get this set up and work or by post simple steps to get the virtual machine, see the HBA/drive?

    TIA

    Hello

    If you had plugged the band to the HBA and then restarted the server, you can go to your virtual machine, and then change the settings and in the Hardware tab, add hardware.

    Go to SCSI devices and add the tape to the virtual machine.

    In other words, if your hardware supports, enable passthrough for the host HBA, in configuration, settings in advance.

    Then reboot and go to the settings of the virtual machine, adding hardware and click on PCI device, add the HBA to this virtual machine.

  • Collection of virtual device SCSI for tape drive node

    When you add a SCSI device such as a SCSI tape drive internal to a particular Windows VM, regardless of which node to virtual device I choose?

    This virtual Windows machine has two SCSI drives:

    -SCSI (0:0) hard drive 1

    -SCSI (0:1) hard disk 2

    Can I put the tape on SCSI drive (0:2)?

    Thank you

    Hello

    Choose a secondary controller and the SCSI ID of the device. If it is a SCSI ID 4 use something like 1:4. It's "best practice".

  • Write backup directly to a tape drive - how?

    Then... connected on one of our hosts ESX is a scsi tape drive.

    A VCB based a host file-level backup works terribly slow (400 - 500 MB/min) and an agent based at the level of the backup files works licensing costs (although it is much faster to nearly 3 GB / min... same servers).

    I read that it is possible to output a right TAR tape... without any sort of proxy backup software.

    I know VERY little of Unix systems... If I wanted to schedule a task of all night for all my virtual machines TAR, how would I go to do?

    The process that I realized it would be to create a script that:

    (1) get the tape drive (whenever I try to "climb" I get the error that it is not a block device)

    (2) Flash virtual machine

    (3) creates an archive of said machine virtual (I think that's what they're called?) with the output piped in the tape drive

    (4) the virtual machine unsnapshot

    (5) remove the tape drive (or go back to step 2 and repeat with another virtual machine)

    Hello

    In the penultimate chapter of the book, VMware ESX Server in the enterprise is such a script. So yes it is possible. I did it several times. I think I have a separate backup/VCB proxy server would be much more effective for you. You can then use existing free and fresh backup tools to provide a backup solution. See http://vmprofessional.com/index.php?content=esx3backups for a comparison of the tools. With compression you have much more space on the backup host to...

  • Are there files in some tape drives?

    DB version: 11.2
    OPERATING SYSTEM: AIX
    MML: Symantec Netbackup 7.1

    I worked only with front based disc backups.

    My question is not specific to Netbackup. I just want to know how if there are directories in tape drives? Or does a wholesale directory where all the backup files are stored?

    After you have configured netbackup, if I run the script below
    RUN
    {
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch00 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';
    SEND 'NB_ORA_CLIENT=emprd218, NB_ORA_SERV=hewmast193';
    BACKUP DATABASE;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch00;

    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch00 TYPE 'SBT_TAPE';
    SEND 'NB_ORA_CLIENT=emprd218, NB_ORA_SERV=hewmast193';
    BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL ;
    RELEASE CHANNEL ch00;
    }
    In which directory in band will be stored all these backups?

    If it was from disk, from the FORMAT parameter, I knew where all the backupfiles are stored.
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/u04/backup/ora_df%t_s%s_s%p';

    Greenish salvation,

    I just want to know how if there are directories in tape drives?

    There is no inventory on the tape. Ribbon tape and disk is disk. (But to be honest, a tape backup can be used to restore files and directory structures).
    Make direct backups to tape you can use:

    BACKUP DATABASE FORMAT "ora_df % t_s %%p s_s.

    Backup will software an internal ranking system is in service a restoration of the channel.

  • How to use the SDLT tape drive in the guest OS VM

    Dear

    now, I have HP DL380 G5 Server running windows 2003 Ent. with bus adapter host SC11xe PCI - E HP which directly connected tp SDLT Tape Drive as backup server and use for the backup operation.

    I want to move the physical backup to host vmware server and EMC AX4 allows you to have a backup online and allows you to take backup offline, SDLT tape drive

    My question is how I use the SDLT tape drive in guest OS vm and vmware knows "HP PCI - E SC11xe Host bus adapter" or not.

    Please let me know how to do this.

    Mahdi Bellavia

    I have a G5 DL385 (AMD of the DL380 version) with a DLT3.   I use an Adaptec 29320LPE, appearing on the compatibility list.  We plugged a HP Ultrium 920 changer using the 'old method' SCSI passthrough.  We bought the Adaptec card, because we used initially ESX3.5.  We are now on ESX4.0, but for various reasons, the configuration left the same, so I have not tried with VMDirectPath I don't know if it is possible to use the SC11ex card, but if you arrive VMDirectPath at work, it seems then you need another SCSI card.
