  • How to identify obsolete files in Windows XP?

My directory of Windows (XP) rose to more than 10 GB, which for me is more than 30% of my C: drive.  I need to create because I only have 1 GB of free space on C:.  Despite the defrag NTFS seems to perform badly under 20% of free space.  (Yes, my documents and program files take up a lot of space, but not nearly as much as the Windows.)

I suspect that most of the files in my Windows directory are really outdated, but I can find no documentation MS how to identify obsolete files of Windows.  Unfortunately, KB MS searches return only the details of the specific software issues and warnings no do not delete the contents of the directories like Installer & $hf_mig$ who collectively represent 40% of the space of files in the Windows folder.

Can someone point me to MS doc on the identification of obsolete files in Windows?

Can someone point me to a reliable freeware that can analyze my Windows folder & identify obsolete files?

    Thanks, J

    Thank you once again.

I moved my Documents to my another internal drive, but it was UGLY.  Fortunately, I made a backup before you start.  The Windows Move function fails if a file is locked by a process.  Supposedly gives the user the possibility of closing the lock program, he abandoned the movement rather than a new attempt.  Thus, the move is only partially complete.  The restore function moves the files back, but not all the original files are retrieved.  (Move offers no option to copy all files successfully before deleting the originals).  With backup & some file/folder comparison software, I was able to recover all the lost files (probably).

In any case, the above is not your fault.  I just thought you should know about the potential problems of moving.  I commented to MS on moving article.  I hope that similar questions are not present in Windows 7.

I still have 26G standing on C, all Documents & settings Windows and Program Files.  But now I have 7 free G.  Move my Documents was a good idea, just as subjects with MS Move function.

Thank you once again.  I will mark it as answered.  John

Right-click the Start button and click computer.

When the usb flash drive is connected, you will see a removable drive with a drive letter assigned to it, could be D-E-F...

You can paste the folders that you ever want to this list by right-clicking and select Paste,

After a personal folder right click and select copy.

Once your done right click the new device and select eject.

It is best to copy and paste the folders instead of separate index files less and the folder structure is maintained.

  • How to play .asx files in Windows Media Player

original title; Can I play a video file of .asx with WMP? or if not, how to play with this extension .asx files?

Can I play a video file of .asx with WMP? or if not, how to play with this extension .asx files?

When I try to play the file, WMP shows error then update says "video codec".

How then can I get this update for the video codec?

    Thank you, Michael Phelps 907

    Hi Mike,.

an .asx file is not a media file. It is a file that contains a pointer to a content online. So if you are unable to read a .asx file and are able to play other files using Windows Media Player so the best thing is to open the .asx, a Notepad file. When you open the .asx using Notepad, you will see a link that starts by http: and so on. Please copy this link and go to Windows Media Player. On the Windows Media Player window, press the Alt key on the keyboard and click file and Open url. Paste the link and check if Windows Media Player is able to open the link. If she opens the link this is a problem with the formatting of the .asx file and if it does not open the link then it is a problem with the server online of the .asx file. It could be that it is deleted from the server.

Hope this information helps. Keep us informed on the status of the issue.

  • How to back up files without a graphical interface to see for

GUI of my laptop no longer works, with the exception of half of a centemeter at the top of the screen of the laptop shows hash instead of the GUI.  Operating system is windows 7 64 bit.

Is there an automated process, I could use to back up my files, or transfer them to a new laptop I buy?  I CAN log on to the computer and use it, I DON'T see what I'm clicking on / or typing.   One thought I had is if I could make a .bat file, I could access to and run, and it would copy my folder/User on a flash drive?

I'd rather not try and get inside my laptop to recover the HARD disk as the laptop is still under warranty and I don't want to risk doing anything to cancel this warranty from Wal-Mart.

So far, most of what I see when it comes to backup or data recovery is using the GUI and clicked on ok/next.  So I think that I "could" be able to this managed by trial and error by clicking, is there an easier way to do this without being able to see what I'm doing?

Is the issue of MISTLETOE, a problem with the monitor?  Perhaps you can connect another monitor to the laptop to use this form instead.  If this is not possible, you may be better to try to do it from the command prompt.

Good idea with the batch file.  You can do this, or try this command to copy your entire profile on your USB.  You will need to know the drive letter of your flash well.

    1. Log on to Windows
    2. Press -R cmd and then Enter.  The command prompt opens.
    3. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      xcopy % userprofile % F:\Backup/v/c/i

Who backs up everything in your profile (for example c:\users\skeene) user folder on your Flash drive (substitute the letter of your flash drive F).

  • How can I copy files from Windows Mail (Vista PC) of my drive external segate to my PC Windows 7?

I have my backups on my external drive Seagate Free Agent of my old PC of Vista Windows that died. How can I transfer my files from Windows Mail, photos and other files to my laptop which has Windows 7 from my external hard drive. I used Windows Backup and Restore to create my backup files.

    Thank you for your help.

File messaging in windows 7 does not work. So even if you copy the files etc on win7, windows mail usually run in Windows 7

There are sites with copies of windows mail that you can use it on Win7 (including the reg files), so it will work properly

  • Use Time Machine to back up files in Windows

Can I back up files of the window automatically to the Time Machine in the Mac Help. I want to only backup data from applications.

    Thnx.

Time Machine is not 100% reliable in the backup and restore of Virtual Machines and I would never use Time Machine to back up Virtual Machines and would exclude the folder containing my Virtual Machines to be backed up by Time Machine!

That said, if the files in question are outside of the Virtual Machine and inside the OS X Filesystem, for example in your Home folder, then Time Machine will back up what the file system of the host that is not excluded.

  • How to open .zip files in windows media player? I get the msg file type not supported. MP3 files are in the folder.

Hi I downloaded audio files that you want to create a playlist on windows media player to download to my mp3 player so I can be more mobile to study. When I tried to play on windows media player I get error msg-file type is not supported or the codec is not compatible with the player. They are .zip files. inside are the mp3 files that I need to listen to. can someone help me.

    Hello

You need to open ZIP files, which are compressed to make it smaller, then use the content
in the application appropriate - so if the audio or video content can use WMP.

Compress and uncompress files (zip files)
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/compress-and-uncompress-files-ZIP-files

Although Windows has integrated ZIP, you might be more comfortable using a program
with more features (and works with different types of compressed files).
